The ability of heteroatom stabilized Fischer carbene complexes (FCCs) to participate in multicomponent reactions (MCRs) has become a characteristic of such organometallics, particularly of chromium carbenes. This feature article updates the main results in this field during the last lustrum, highlighting the ability of FCCs for the construction of densely functionalized frameworks, mainly through the successive incorporation of unsaturated moieties (alkynes, CO ligands, ... ) in a sequential manner. Examples where up to seven components are coupled will be presented.

The reaction temperature controls the formation of different borylated products. A proposed mechanism involving uncommon skeletal rearrangement is supported by DFT calculations.

Synthesis of BN-Polyarenes by a Mild Borylative Cyclization Cascade

Summary: The reaction of BCl3 with suitably substituted o-alkynylani-lines promotes a cascade reaction to obtain BN-polycyclic compounds through the formation of two new cycles and three new bonds in a single operational step. This reaction is highly efficient and can be conducted at room temperature, providing a mild and straightforward strategy for the preparation of BN-aromatic compounds, which can further be transformed into various BN-PAHs with different polycyclic cores and substituents.

Summary: Treatment of vinylbenzopyridines with allyl(dichloro)borane leads to the formation of five-membered organoborate heterocycles through a metal-free carboboration. These organoborates can react with Grignard reagents to produce a diverse range of derivatives belonging to the novel family of four-coordinate organoboron compounds. Some of these derivatives have been utilized as reagents in phenylations and methylations, achieving moderate to high yields in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

& beta;-Functionalization of 4 a-aza-8 a-boranaphthalene via Iridium-catalyzed C-H Borylation

Summary: A general method for the functionalization of 4a-aza-8a-boranaphthalene in the β position to the nitrogen atom has been developed. This method utilizes a regioselective iridium-catalyzed C-H activation process to introduce a boronate group, which can be further transformed into various aryl or alkynyl groups through cross-coupling reactions. Selective mono- or difunctionalization can be achieved by controlling the reaction conditions during the borylation step. The photophysical properties of the obtained 3- or 3,6-substituted BN-naphthalenes have been evaluated, and some of them exhibit significant fluorescence with a quantum yield of up to 0.85.

Summary: The first example of a porous polymer containing B-N covalent bonds prepared using the solvent knitting strategy is reported. The polymer exhibits micromeso porosity, high thermal stability, and potential properties as a highly stable and efficient photocatalyst. After the first run, the catalyst improves its photocatalytic activity and maintains this activity in successive runs, making it a new type of material with potential applications.

Summary: Cyclobutane-fused dihydropyridones can be synthesized efficiently via a completely endo-selective gold-catalyzed cyclization of alkynylcyclobutanes with an appended amide, under mild conditions. The observed selectivity, opposite to that observed for the cyclization of related alcohols and acids, is supported by DFT calculations.

Summary: The awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is low among the public, physicians, and health authorities, with many still confusing it with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. There is a prevailing view that CKD is mainly associated with kidney replacement therapy, but in reality, its main burden is accelerated aging and premature death from all causes, especially cardiovascular diseases. Researchers are calling for increased investment in CKD research to prevent it from becoming the second leading cause of death globally by 2040.

Effect on Rheological Properties and 3D Printability of Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Microporous Particles in Hydrocolloid-Based Hydrogels

Summary: The production of patient-specific bone substitutes using 3D printing is emerging as an alternative to autologous bone grafting. Material characteristics such as porosity and stiffness play a crucial role in tissue regeneration. By using hydrogel combined with biphasic calcium phosphate particles, a complex network with good mechanical properties can be obtained. Various factors, including crosslinking time and printing parameters, as well as particle size and concentration, affect the stiffness of the printed matrices. The swelling behavior and degradability of the printed structures are also dependent on the particle characteristics.

Summary: In this article, a novel catalytic reaction using Pd(0) and Bronsted acid is reported for the synthesis of biologically important imidazolidinone-fused N-heterocycles through redox-neutral intramolecular N-allylation of indoles and pyrroles with alkynes. This atom-economical method is applicable to a wide range of substrates and eliminates the need for leaving groups or oxidizing agents commonly used in traditional allylation reactions.

Rh(III)-catalyzed selective mono- and dual-functionalization/cyclization of 1-aryl-5-aminopyrazoles with iodonium ylides

Summary: In this study, an efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed selective mono- and dual-C-H bond functionalization/cyclization with iodonium ylide as the sole coupling partner was demonstrated. Fused benzodiazepine skeletons were obtained in excellent yields, providing an improved approach to dual C-H unsymmetrical functionalization.

Modified minimal-size fragments of heparan sulfate as inhibitors of endosulfatase-2 (Sulf-2)

Summary: This study presents the design and synthesis of sulfated disaccharide inhibitors based on IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S), which showed potent inhibition of Sulf-2. The results suggest that IdoA(2S)-GlcNS(6S) is the shortest fragment size required for effective inhibition of Sulfs, and a trisulfated disaccharide is identified as the minimal fragment size of heparan sulfate for effective endosulfatase inhibition.

Reductive cyclodimerization of chalcones: exploring the self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrosynthesis

Summary: The self-adaptability of galvanostatic electrolysis was found to be helpful in a multistage chemo- and diastereoselective electrochemically promoted cyclodimerization of chalcones. Through a series of reductive events, densely functionalized cyclopentanes with five contiguous stereocenters were obtained (25 examples, yields up to 95%, dr values up to >20:1). Further experimental and electrochemical investigations indicated the crucial role of dynamic kinetic resolution of the aldol intermediate in the reaction mechanism.

Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative [4+2] annulation of 2-arylquinoxalines and 2-aryl-2H-indazoles with allyl alcohols

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of functionalized benzo[a]phenazines and indazolo[2,3-a]quinolines was achieved through Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 2-arylquinoxalines and 2-aryl-2H-indazoles with allyl alcohols. The method showed a wide substrate scope, excellent functional group tolerance, good to high yields of annulated products, and the capability for scaled-up synthesis. A tentative mechanism of the annulation reaction was proposed based on a preliminary mechanistic investigation.

PbTeB4O9: a lead tellurium borate with unprecedented fundamental building block [B4O10] and large birefringence

Summary: A new lead tellurium borate material with a unique fundamental building block [B4O10] was synthesized and found to exhibit high birefringence. The structure-property relationship was discussed using first-principles calculations.
