Feature Binding in the Feedback Layers of Area V2

The visual features of an object are processed by multiple, functionally specialized areas of cerebral cortex. When several objects are seen simultaneously, what mechanism preserves the association of features that belong to a single item? We address this question-known as the binding problem-by examining combinatorial feature selectivity of neurons in area V2. In recording from anesthetized macaques, we estimate that dual selectivity for chromatic and spatiotemporal attributes is 50% more common (27% vs. 18% sampling frequency) in superficial and deep layer neurons receiving feedback connections from higher areas, compared with layer 4-3 neurons relaying ascending signals. The operation of feedback pathways is thought to mediate attentional modulation of activity that may achieve binding through acting to select one single object for higher representation and filtering out competing objects. We propose that dual-selective neurons perform a bridging function, mediating the transfer of feedback-induced bias between feature dimensions. The bias can be propagated through V2 output neurons (of unitary selectivity) to higher levels of specialized processing and so promote selection of the target object's representation among multiple feature maps. The bridging function would thus act to unify the outcome of parallel, object-selective processes taking place along segregated visual pathways.

Interocular suppression in primary visual cortex in strabismus: impact of staggering the presentation of stimuli to the eyes

Summary: In strabismus, interocular suppression is necessary to prevent double vision. Although previous studies suggest that neuronal firing inhibition in the primary visual cortex only occurs when stimuli are presented sequentially, the recordings in alert macaques raised with exotropia showed limited evidence to support the idea that staggered stimulus presentation is more effective at inducing interocular suppression of V1 neurons.

CXCR4 expression in tumor associated cells in blood is prognostic for progression and survival in pancreatic cancer

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the expression of CXCR4 in tumor-associated cells in the blood of pancreatic cancer patients and explore its relationship with cell migration and patient clinical outcomes. The results showed that high expression of CXCR4 in circulating tumor cells, cancer-associated macrophage-like cells, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition cells was significantly associated with increased numbers in circulation, and higher expression of CXCR4 in cancer-associated macrophage-like cells and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition cells was significantly related to faster progression and worse survival.

Clinical Applications of Cancer-Associated Cells Present in the Blood of Cancer Patients

Summary: The usage of beta blockers in breast cancer patients is associated with a reduction in distant metastases, cancer recurrence, and cancer mortality. Studies indicate that the adrenergic pathway plays a role in the promotion of tumor growth and cancer cell dissemination. Cancer-associated macrophage-like cells (CAMLs) originating from tumors may facilitate the spread of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). The expression of the Beta-2 adrenergic receptor (B2AR) in CAMLs is closely linked to their presence in the circulation, size, as well as the progression-free survival and overall survival of breast cancer patients.

Micronuclei in Circulating Tumor Associated Macrophages Predicts Progression in Advanced Colorectal Cancer

Summary: Micronuclei (MN), fragments of damaged nucleic acids, are a repair mechanism for chromosomal instabilities in cells. Presence of MN in circulating white blood cells indicates increased cancer risk, while their presence in tumor cells indicates aggressive subtypes. MN form independently over time and therapy induction, and are correlated with poor clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer.

CCR5 activation and endocytosis in circulating tumor-derived cells isolated from the blood of breast cancer patients provide information about clinical outcome

Summary: Through studying the activation and endocytosis process of CCR5, it has been found that CCR5 forms clusters of less than 1 micron in breast cancer cells, which are endocytosed in the presence of RANTES. When analyzing TACs from patients, it was also observed that CCR5 clusters appeared on the cell surface and translocated to the nuclear area, and the number of CCR5 clusters had a positive correlation with the increase of TACs. Furthermore, patients with a very high number of CCR5 clusters (>10 clusters) in circulating stromal cells were associated with worse progression-free survival (hazard ratio = 4.5, p = 0.002) and worse overall survival (hazard ratio = 3.7, p = 0.014).
