Summary: This research investigates the effect of adding aluminosilicate (bentonite) nanoclay powder on the mechanical and dynamic mechanical behavior of polyester composites. The results show that the addition of nanoclay can enhance the mechanical properties of the composites, and 5 wt% bentonite clay addition provides the best strength and storage modulus.

Summary: This research successfully developed high-strength Al7075-SiC nanocomposites through integration of stir casting and cryo-FSP. The secondary processing through cryo-FSP not only refined the matrix grain size and suppressed the coarsening of the strengthening phase, but also significantly enhanced the strength and ductility of the material.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of pretreated steel slag on the mechanical properties of cement stabilized materials and the changes in its microstructure. A low-cost and field-applicable pretreatment technique is identified that effectively suppresses the swelling of steel slag. The addition of 18% fly ash to steel slag can effectively reduce its swelling rate, and the pretreated slag can replace half of the gravel in cement stabilized materials. The volcanic ash reaction between the slag and fly ash also contributes to the mechanical properties and durability of the cement stabilized materials.

Summary: Two nanomicas with different particle size distributions were used to prepare transparent epoxy nanocomposites. The nanocomposites showed homogeneous dispersion and no aggregation of nanoparticles. Despite the good dispersion, no exfoliation or intercalation was observed. The nanocomposites exhibited a slight decrease in transparency and no significant change in thermal behavior. The mechanical characterization revealed an increased Young's modulus but reduced tensile strength. A peridynamics-based approach was implemented to estimate the effective Young's modulus and fracture toughness of the nanomodified materials, and the results were validated against experimental data. The mica-based composites showed high volume resistivity and could be used as insulating materials.

Summary: The effect of co-doping of titania and manganese oxide at different weight percentages on sintering behaviour and mechanical properties of alumina were studied. The addition of doping reduced the sintering temperature and improved the density and mechanical properties of alumina. XRD analysis revealed the formation of R-TiO2 and alpha-alumina at low sintering temperature, which further reacted to form Al2TiO5 at higher sintering temperature. MnO2 did not react with alumina due to atomic radii mismatch. SEM showed abnormal grain growth with increasing sintering temperature and dopant composition.

Summary: This study systematically examined the effect of heat-treatment temperature on the structural evolution and mechanical response of Haynes (R) HR-224 (R) alloy, revealing a significant increase in room temperature tensile strength and a reduction of ductility under 600-800 degrees C/2 h heat treatment conditions. Discontinuous precipitation (DP) of (gamma + gamma')/M23C6 was identified as the main structural process affecting the observed mechanical behavior of the material.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different additions of nickel and zirconium on the matrix alloy of Al-SiC metal matrix composites to enhance their high-temperature performance. The addition of nickel led to a continuous improvement in the mechanical response, while the addition of zirconium did not have the same effect.

Summary: An ultrathin wall Mg-8Zn-8Al alloy with coarse ix-Mg grains, ultra-fine beta-Mg grains, and nano-sized icosahedral quasicrystal phase particles has been manufactured by high-pressure die casting. The alloy exhibits outstanding strength and acceptable elongation. The observations through HAADF-STEM reveal possible amorphous regions, C-containing phase and/or MgO aggregations, and Zn-rich clusters and pyramidal precipitates. The combination of ultra-fine grains and the skeleton consisting of nano-sized I-phase particles and solutes contributes to the ultra-high strength. In addition, the study indicates the unavoidable interaction of alloy melt with CO2 during ultra-thin wall HPDC and the possibility of pyramidal precipitation in Zn-containing magnesium alloys.

Summary: The TiZrNb metal-matrix composites reinforced by in-situ formed borides were produced using different amounts of TiB2. The composites exhibited varying microstructures and mechanical properties with the increase in boride content. Load transfer strengthening was found to be the main contributor to the overall strength of the composite. The biocompatibility evaluation suggested a decrease in the proliferation rate of mesenchymal stem cells with an increase in boride content.

Summary: This study demonstrates ultrahigh and stable enantioselectivity using CD-MOF/PES mixed-matrix membranes. The decline of membrane enantioselectivity is found to be influenced by the interaction of solvent with chiral molecules and MOF structure. This work provides a new strategy for designing enantioselective membranes based on homochiral MOFs.
