Summary: Inflammaging refers to chronic low-grade inflammation caused by immune and non-immune cells stimulated by endogenous/self, misplaced or altered molecules, belonging to physiological aging. This inflammatory status is characterized by increased inflammation and decreased autophagy, and predisposes to age-related diseases. Phenolic compounds, particularly hydroxytyrosol (HTyr) found in extra-virgin olive oil, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may counteract inflammaging and contribute to healthy aging.

Summary: Primary human bronchial epithelial cultures (HBECs) are useful for studying airway physiology, disease, and drug development, but their expansion through passaging can affect their phenotype and gene expression, as well as their functional properties.

Summary: SLC26A9 is identified as the primary source of constitutive anion secretion across bronchial epithelium, showing differential responses to common inhibitors of anion secretion compared to CFTR. These results should lay a strong foundation for future studies exploring the activation of SLC26A9 as an alternative anion channel in cystic fibrosis, and investigating how single-nucleotide polymorphisms in SLC26A9 modulate airway disease.

Summary: In cystic fibrosis, a deficiency in CFTR function leads to chronic lung disease. Abnormalities in lipid metabolism and oxidative stress were observed in CF airway epithelium, indicating potential roles in CF lung pathology progression. Treatment with antioxidants or CFTR modulators may require a combination approach for correction of the CF phenotype.

Summary: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common autosomal recessive disorder caused by different mutations in the CFTR gene. The exact prevalence of CF in Arab countries is unknown, but F508 del mutation is common. We present a case of a CF patient with negative genetic testing for common mutations but a novel mutation was identified on CFTR gene sequencing.
