Summary: Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals, but its low availability in arable soils worldwide has led to serious agricultural problems. Plants have evolved multiple responses to adapt to Zn deficiency, involving biochemical and physiological changes to improve Zn acquisition and utilization, and defend against Zn deficiency stress. Studies on the regulatory mechanisms underlying Zn deficiency responses are important for improving Zn deficiency tolerance, use efficiency, and biofortification in plants.

Summary: The study revealed that new genes in rice have relatively low expression levels, possibly controlled by distal enhancers and chromatin conformation at their TSS; the chromatin in TSS regions may be remodeled in response to abiotic stress, indicating conditional expression of young genes. Furthermore, transcripts of young genes in Arabidopsis are prone to nonsense-mediated RNA decay, restricting their expression.

Summary: The study by Navarro and colleagues reveals that arsenite can regulate the uptake and detoxification of arsenate in plants under low-phosphate conditions by controlling the stability of PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE 1. This finding opens up new opportunities for researching mitigation strategies to address arsenic toxicity in plants.

Summary: This review provides an overview of recent progress in understanding drought response mechanisms in plants, focusing on the role of transcription factor families. It highlights the importance of studying these mechanisms in model plants like Arabidopsis and economically and ecologically significant woody species like Populus. The review also mentions the potential for further insights into drought responses in woody plants through high-throughput omics analyses and advanced genome editing techniques.

Summary: The precise genome editing mediated by the CRISPR/Cas system has revolutionized genome engineering, with the use of dCas variants expanding its applications to genetic and translational research without inducing DNA double-strand breaks. Fusion of effector domains to dCas proteins empowers the CRISPR/dCas system as a multifunctional platform, enabling gene expression regulation, epigenetic regulation, and sequence-specific imaging. This review highlights recent advances in transcriptional activation and repression, as well as epigenetic modifications, and discusses the future directions and broader applications of the CRISPR/dCas systems in plants.

Summary: Iron deficiency responses in plants involve various hormones and signaling molecules, including auxin, ethylene, glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), and S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). However, the regulation of these responses in dicot plants is not fully understood. This review provides an update on the role of NO, GSNO, and GSNOR in the regulation of Fe deficiency responses, discussing their interactions with auxin and ethylene and their mode of action through post-translational modifications.

Summary: Soil salinity poses a serious threat to global food production, limiting crop growth and yield. Traditional breeding methods are time-consuming and expensive, while genetic engineering is increasingly being used to confer salt tolerance in crops. However, most studies are still limited to the laboratory level, with field trials needed to prove the long-term efficacy of these approaches.

Summary: This study compared physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolic analyses in apple seedlings under different potassium (K) conditions. The results reveal that K deficiency and excess conditions affect various aspects of apple development and metabolism. Transcriptome and metabolite analyses suggest that apple plants regulate gene expression and carbon metabolism to cope with low and high K stresses. This research provides insights into the metabolic processes involved in K response and offers a foundation for improving K utilization efficiency in apples.

Summary: Plants accumulate triacylglycerol in vegetative tissues under stress conditions by activating key transcription factors regulating seed triacylglycerol biosynthesis to enhance plant tolerance to environmental stresses. This metabolic reprogramming is driven by transcriptional regulation, involving both seed maturation program derepression and stress-induced transcription factors activation, linking TAG biosynthesis with plant survival in adverse environments.

Summary: This review focuses on the activation and responses of the MAPK pathway under heavy metal stresses, particularly emphasizing the specificity of MAPK activation mediated by ROS, NO, and plant hormones. The signaling pathways and their interactions under heavy metal stresses are described. The importance of regulating targets in the process of MAPK phosphorylation and the response of downstream transcriptional factors is highlighted, providing insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying heavy metal accumulation and tolerance.

Summary: Terpenes, including volatile terpenes, are vital for tea aroma and have wide applications in cosmetics and medicine. Terpene emission can be triggered by various stress factors, leading to plant defense responses and interactions. Transcription factors (MYB, MYC, NAC, ERF, WRKY, and bHLH) regulate key genes involved in terpenoid biosynthesis. Recent studies have identified essential terpene synthesis genes and transcription factors in tea plants, and this review focuses on their transcriptional regulation and importance.

Summary: NK cells are innate lymphocytes with cytotoxic functions, playing key roles in host protection against viruses and malignancy. Recent research has shown that NK cells have the ability to mount memory or memory-like immune responses, generating long-lived memory cells with enhanced functionality. Understanding the regulation of antigen-specific effector and memory NK responses is an active and important area of research.
