Summary: In this study, KIR genotypes and haplotypes of 124 unrelated Malaysians were determined using PCRSSP genotyping and an EM algorithm. A total of 27 distinct KIR haplotypes were identified, with a higher frequency of haplotype A than haplotype B. Several haplotypes were found to be unique to specific ethnic groups. Despite limitations, the study successfully highlighted the genotype and haplotypes in the Malaysian population, providing the first step in utilizing KIR for identifying suitable transplant donors.

Summary: This study proposed a novel consolidation strategy for pediatric AML by adoptive infusion of NKAE cells after first complete remission, highlighting recruitment challenges and safety of the therapy. However, more research is needed to draw conclusions on efficacy due to limited patient numbers and markers.

Summary: The study found that the KIR2DS2/HLA C1 functional unit has a strong protective effect against adverse outcomes of COVID-19. This marker, combined with other factors such as age, sex, and autoimmune diseases, could provide highly informative insights into disease progression and enable timely interventions to reduce mortality associated with severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Summary: Advances in DNA sequencing technologies have enabled genotyping of complex genetic regions, but exact genotypes are often impossible to derive. Researchers have developed an expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate haplotype frequencies (HTFs) in complex gene regions, taking into account missing data and linkage disequilibrium. The algorithm can handle numerous ambiguities in the data and improve haplotype reconstruction by combining information from multiple genes.

Summary: The East Balkan Swine (EBS) in Bulgaria shows high genetic diversity but has a small effective population size. Variations in distribution and genetic structure of the breed are influenced by historical crossbreeding and regional breeding systems. Efforts should be made to maintain diversity and continue conservation measures.

Summary: In this study, the HLA-B allele, genotype, and haplotype frequencies in a healthy Colombian population were analyzed, showing high frequency for HLA-B*35, B*40, and B*44 alleles, and low frequency for the HLA-B*27 allele. Racial mixing and migration phenomena were confirmed based on the results.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of maternal KIR haplotype on reproductive outcomes in IVF cycles for patients with recurrent pregnancy loss and recurrent implantation failure. The results showed that patients with a KIR AA haplotype had a significantly higher chance of miscarriage during IVF procedures, and this haplotype also increased the chances of achieving pregnancy in IVF cycles.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of HBV genotypes in the presence of HBV in the placenta and fetus. The results showed that subgenotype C1 was the most common in Northern Thai pregnant women, followed by subgenotype B9. HBV genotype B had a higher trend in intrauterine detection compared to genotype C. Furthermore, the placenta could possibly be a site of HBV accumulation, and mutation is unlikely to occur during intrauterine exposure.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the genotype and subgenotypes of HBV circulating in Saudi Arabia, the presence of clinically relevant mutations possibly associated with resistance to antivirals or immune escape phenomena, and the possible impact of mutations in the structural characteristics of HBV polymerase. Plasma samples from 12 Saudi Arabian HBV-infected patients were analyzed using an in-house PCR method and direct sequencing. Saudi patients were infected with mainly subgenotype D1 and showed multiple mutations in the RT and S genes, which may have implications for the natural and therapeutic history of HBV infection.

Summary: The flavonoid compound naringin has shown therapeutic effects against the ototoxic effects of cisplatin and aminoglycosides, potentially through mechanisms such as antioxidation, anti-apoptosis, promoting proliferation, and hair cell regeneration. This suggests a novel therapeutic role for naringin as an otoprotective drug against the adverse effects of these medications.
