Summary: The aim of this study was to fabricate dual cross linked sodium alginate/montmorillonite microbeads as a potential drug carrier for extended release of curcumin. Characterization of the microbeads was done using FTIR, DSC, TGA, X-RD, and SEM. The swelling and in vitro release studies of the microbeads were influenced by the pH of test media, indicating their potential for intestinal drug delivery.

Summary: The novel amphiphilic thermal-responsive copolymer P4 can enhance the AIE and MRI effects in vivo due to its vesicle formation with a bilayer structure. As a fluorescent thermometer, P4 has intracellular fluorescence imaging capability and is sensitive to temperature with a detection limit of 1.5 degrees C. Additionally, P4 as a MRI contrast agent exhibits high relaxation rate, prolonging circulation time, and reduces biological toxicity by quick Gd3+ release from the body by disassembly. This work introduces new synthetic ideas for dual-modal probes with great potential for clinical diagnostic applications in bioimaging.

Summary: In this study, a dual-source-driven nanomotor coupled with dual-targeting ligands (CD@NM) was designed for efficient capture, specific imaging, and quantitative detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). CD@NMs autonomously moved in both water and biological fluid, improving the capture efficiency of CTCs. Specific labeling of CTCs was achieved through the fluorescence quenching and recovery of carbon dots on the CD@NMs. The CD@NMs exhibited efficient CTC capture, specific CTC imaging, and recognition in whole blood, and were successfully deployed in the specific imaging of tumor tissues in vivo.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been selected as a target for early cancer diagnosis, and there are many mature probes for monitoring endogenous H2S through single optical imaging. However, single modality is not an ideal method for accurate diagnosis in comprehensive biological organisms. In this study, a dual-modal imaging probe BWS was developed, which showed a specific response to H2S with both chemiluminescence and NIR fluorescence light-up. The dual signals of fluorescence and chemiluminescence provided double insurances for highly accurate monitoring of H2S.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the design and application of a PET/MRI dual-modal imaging agent based on superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION). The α(v)β(3)-targeting RGD peptide and Cu-64 were conjugated onto SPION. Small animal PET and MR imaging in glioblastoma tumor-bearing mice showed that this dual-modal imaging contrast agent could potentially be used for PET/MRI dual-modal imaging for tumor diagnosis.

Summary: Dual phototherapy, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), has attracted extensive research interest for imaging-guided synergistic antitumor treatment. However, developing high-efficient phototherapeutic agents remains a challenge. A copper-coordinated nanotheranostic was designed by tightly associating photothermal-agent indocyanine green (ICG) with photodynamic-agent pheophorbide A (PhA) using Cu2+ as a bridge, showing high dual-photosensitizers co-loading and excellent structural stability.

Summary: In this study, multi-element charge-transfer co-doped carbon dots (CDs) were developed as dual-mode contrast agents for osteosarcoma (OS) models. The hydrothermal carbonization method was used to obtain P, W co-doped CDs, P, W, Hf co-doped CDs-1, and P, W, Hf co-doped CDs-2, which exhibited high long-wavelength quantum yields in N, N-dimethylformamide solution. P, W, Hf co-doped CDs-1 showed superior biocompatibility, cell imaging, and fluorescence/CT high contrast imaging performance compared to the other CDs. Biodistribution and pharmacokinetic results also indicated that P, W, Hf co-doped CDs-1 has potential as a dual-mode imaging contrast agent for OS.
