Summary: The article "On Chorea" by George Huntington was published in The Medical and Surgical Reporter of Philadelphia on April 13, 1872. It is a significant milestone in the recognition of Huntington's chorea, a disease that later became named after him. However, there are still some myths and curiosities surrounding the history of this publication and its author.

Summary: Research indicates an increase in tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic since the 19th century, attributed to early data deficiencies, while most of the variability in North Atlantic tropical cyclone activity over the last century is directly related to regional rather than global climate change.

Summary: Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative genetic disorder caused by the expansion of a trinucleotide repeat in the huntingtin gene, leading to widespread cellular degeneration and motor, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Despite extensive research on the disease, a disease-modifying treatment has not yet been approved.

Summary: In the context of the increasing global interest in the role of forests in global warming and biodiversity targets, there is a growing tendency to consider the need to increase forest area and naturalness. Italy has seen a continuous increase in forest quantity, but faces challenges in preserving forest naturalness and cultural characteristics.

Summary: The article points out that there has been relatively slow progress in quantifying mental evolution in ethology and comparative psychology, and old debates still persist in the mechanistic interpretation of cognition. Experimental methods have also made slow progress since the introduction of the puzzle box. By discussing examples of 'mental state attribution' and 'perspective taking' and suggesting the introduction of novel methodological inventions, the article proposes a better understanding of the functioning of the mind.

Summary: ILAR, established in 1953 as part of the National Academies, has played a significant role in advancing necessary research using animals for the benefit of humans, animals, and the environment. In 2022, it will be restructured into BAHSCR within the National Academies, continuing its mission of promoting animal health sciences, conservation, and research.

Summary: Animal health laboratories play a crucial role in safeguarding animal and public health, but their distribution is uneven globally. To address this issue, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) established the Laboratory Twinning Programme. This program has been widely implemented in OIE member countries over the past 16 years and has achieved diverse outcomes. Evaluation and development of a monitoring system tailored to the program's specificities are recommended.

Summary: The Mexican axolotl is an important model in regeneration research and regenerative medicine. Its remarkable ability to regenerate tissues and body parts has made it a popular subject for experimental investigations. This article examines how the axolotl became an experimental animal in regeneration research, the role of practices and infrastructures in this process, and the oscillation of regeneration in the axolotl between being an epistemic thing and a technical object.

Summary: Monthly Weather Review, one of the oldest continuously published meteorological journals in the world, has reached its 150th volume this year. It was initially produced by the U.S. War Department's Army Signal Service in 1873 as a monthly report summarizing weather across the United States. Over time, it evolved into a scientific journal and was later transferred to the American Meteorological Society. The research published within the Review has made significant contributions to various fields in weather and climate studies.

Summary: In the mid-19th century, Marseille became a center of interest for European scientists in marine natural sciences. The first Zoology Laboratory was established in 1868, followed by the creation of the Station Marine d'Endoume in 1889. This institution has survived wars and continues to exist today. An inventory of taxa described by scientists from the Station Marine d'Endoume was compiled and arranged in a public database. The study shows how taxonomic descriptions contributed to scientific knowledge and discusses trends in taxonomic and naturalistic research based on the institution's experience.

Summary: Foredunes act as efficient natural coastal defenses during storm events and host significant biodiversity as an ecosystem. However, economic development and recreational use can lead to a modification of natural functioning and mixing of natural and anthropogenic processes. The study on Truc Vert beach-dune system in SW France has shown the profound influence of different management strategies on coastal dune changes and the current coastal dune landscape. Historical documentation coupled with ground penetrating radar (GPR) was crucial in determining the contributions of human interventions in modern dune evolution and morphological development.

Summary: Organism-environment interactions are central to the emergence of biological diversity and the response of ecosystems to environmental change, involving processes at different hierarchical levels that require integrative approaches and suitable model systems. Studying Asellus aquaticus can provide insights into the influence of host-microbiome interactions on organismal and ecosystem function, the relevance of biotic interactions in ecosystem processes, and how ecological conditions and evolutionary forces facilitate phenotypic diversification.

Summary: This report presents a recently discovered student script of a paleontology lecture by Ernst Haeckel. The script covers the taxonomy and anatomy of fossil invertebrates and vertebrates. The drawings included in the script provide insights into Haeckel's visualization of paleontology in the 1860s. The report also explores the division between zoology, embryology, and paleontology in Germany during the 19th century.

Summary: This paper explores the historical and philosophical context of biology in the German-speaking world where Hans-Jorg Rheinberger began his work. It discusses three German philosophical traditions - neo-Kantianism, phenomenology, and Lebensphilosophie - and their interest in the development and conceptual challenges of life sciences in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The paper argues that this discourse continued beyond 1945 and formed an important background for the field of history and philosophy of biology, as seen in Rheinberger's work.

Summary: This article reconstructs the history of evolutionary theory from the 19th century to modern concepts, focusing on Darwin's impact on biology and discussing Darwinism and anti-Darwinism. It highlights the differences between Darwin's theories and emphasizes E. Mayr's anti-Kuhn arguments, suggesting the evolution of evolutionary theory can be interpreted using a modified research programmes theory combined with aspects of Marxian-Hegelian dialectics.
