Recent studies have reported that stem cells can be isolated from a wide range of tissues including bone marrow, fatty tissue, adipose tissue and placenta. Moreover, several studies also suggest that skin dermis could serve as a source of stem cells, but are of unclear phenotype. Therefore, we isolated and investigated to determine the potential of stem cell within human skin dermis. We isolated cells from human dermis, termed here as human dermis-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hDMSCs) which is able to be isolated by using explants culture method. Our method has an advantage over the enzymatic method as it is easier, less expensive and less cell damage. hDMSCs were maintained in basal culture media and proliferation potential was measured. hDMSCs were highly proliferative and successfully expanded with no additional growth factor. In addition, hDMSCs revealed normal karyotype and expressed high levels of CD90, CD73 and CD105 while did not express the surface markers for CD34, CD45 and HLA-DR. Also, we confirmed that hDMSCs possess the capacity to differentiate into multiple lineage including adipocyte, osteocyte, chondrocyte and precursor of hepatocyte lineage. Considering these results, we suggest that hDMSCs might be a valuable source of stem cells and could potentially be a useful source of clinical application.

Summary: This study used machine learning to predict newborn's BMI based on ultrasound measures and maternal/delivery information. The most important predictors were AC and EFW among the ultrasound measures, and linear regression and random forest models outperformed artificial neural networks in predicting newborn's BMI.

The anti-diabetic drug alogliptin induces vasorelaxation via activation of Kv channels and SERCA pumps

Hee Seok Jung, Mi Seon Seo, Jin Ryeol An, Ryeon Heo, Minji Kang, Eun-Taek Han, Hongzoo Park, Geehyun Song, Youn Kyoung Son, Won-Kyo Jung, Il-Whan Choi, Sung Hun Na, Won Sun Park

Summary: In this study, alogliptin induced vasorelaxation in rabbit aortic smooth muscle by activating Kv channels and SERCA pump independently of other K+ channels, cGMP/PKG-related or cAMP/PKA-related signaling pathways, and the endothelium. No significant changes were observed with inhibitors targeting different channels or signaling pathways, suggesting a unique mechanism for the vasorelaxant effect of alogliptin.

Predictors of Newborn's Weight for Height: A Machine Learning Study Using Nationwide Multicenter Ultrasound Data

Ki Hoon Ahn, Kwang-Sig Lee, Se Jin Lee, Sung Ok Kwon, Sunghun Na, Kyongjin Kim, Hye Sim Kang, Kyung A. Lee, Hye-Sung Won, Moon Young Kim, Han Sung Hwang, Mi Hye Park

Summary: This study compared the performance measures of various newborn weight-for-height indicators using machine learning, ultrasonographic data, and maternal/delivery information. The top predictors for newborn weight were identified, and it was concluded that ultrasonographic fetal biometry is more suitable for newborn weight, weight/height, and weight/height(2) indicators. Machine learning with ultrasonographic data is highlighted as an effective noninvasive approach for predicting newborn weight and related indicators.

Summary: The Korean Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine developed the first Korean clinical practice guidelines for prenatal aneuploidy screening and diagnostic testing in 2019, which were adapted from established guidelines in other countries. The guidelines focus on maternal serum screening for fetal aneuploidy and cell-free DNA screening, with recommendations including informing pregnant women of common fetal aneuploidy, providing counseling early in pregnancy, and not recommending cfDNA screening for multiple gestations. The guidelines were reviewed and approved by the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences.
