Summary: Two configurationally isomeric maleonitrile-tethered, N-atom-donor tridentate ligands, HL1-Ar and HL2-Ar, were synthesized and characterized. Co(ii) and Ni(ii) metal ions reacted differently with these ligands, with Ni(ii) being effective in the transformation of HL1-Ar to HL2-Ar. The electronic effects of the ligands and the type of metal ion played a crucial role in their reactivity. The complexes formed were fully characterized and their spectral data explained based on the different electronic environments of the ligands. The redox instability of Co(ii) complexes with HL2-Ar was studied, and a proposed mechanism for the amine-imine interconversion process was supported by experimental and computational data.

Summary: An efficient Au(III)/Ag(I) co-catalytic platform has been established for the synthesis of cyclopentadienes through amine-release annulation of enaminones with alkynes. The generated vinylcarbenoids undergo a tandem annulation process with enaminones to give aminocyclopentenes as key intermediates. This bimetal catalytic system is compatible with a broad substrate scope under mild reaction conditions, and the obtained cyclopentadienes can undergo late-stage modifications into complex molecules with high chemo- and regioselectivities.

Summary: The development of a mild and efficient activation protocol for N2O-based selective oxidation has significant academic and applied values. This study reveals that decatungstate (DT) anion and its hybrids with metal ions are active for the N2O-involved oxidative dehydrogenation reactions. The best catalyst achieves high cyclohexanone yield and is efficient for the N2O-involved ODH reactions of various alcohols.

Summary: A feasible method was developed for preparing supported anionic gold nanoparticle catalysts using multivacant lacunary polyoxometalates, confirming the strong electronic interaction between gold nanoparticles and the polyoxometalates, allowing for sequential modulation of the electronic states of the catalysts. The catalyst prepared using [SiW9O34](10-) showed superior catalytic performance and stability compared to supported gold nanoparticle catalysts without this modification.

Summary: This study reveals the influence of HBr on the reaction pathway and performance of propane dehydrogenation catalyzed by CeO2 through DFT-based microkinetic simulations. HBr enhances the adsorption of propane and reduces the activation energy of C-H bond in propane. Moreover, the reactivity of surface hydroxyl for C-H bond activation is significantly increased in the presence of HBr.

Summary: This study presents the preparation and application of two polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic frameworks as catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation reactions. These catalysts are based on nonprecious metals and utilize molecular oxygen as the oxidant. Catalyst 1 exhibits tolerance for various substrates and the mechanism is supported by evidence from electron paramagnetic resonance and X-ray photoelectron spectra.

Summary: Kinetic, isotopic, and spectroscopic studies have identified the active site requirements for three catalytic cycles involving methanol and oxygen reactions on titania-supported vanadium oxide catalysts. These cycles include oxidative dehydrogenation, Bronsted acid-catalyzed, and Tishchenko reactions. The structure of the active sites plays a crucial role in determining the rates and yields of the three products.

Summary: We have developed a modular catalytic protocol for the synthesis of substituted phenols via the direct dehydrogenative aromatization of simple cyclohexanones in a metal-free manner. This approach offers a simple operation, low reagent cost and green conditions, making it a promising alternative strategy for the carbonyl desaturation in organic synthesis.

Summary: The regioselective synthesis of furo- and thieno-quinolines was achieved through the use of an amine oxidase-inspired catalyst (1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) and an abundant Lewis acid (FeCl3) as a co-catalyst. The mild aerobic amine dehydrogenation reaction resulted in high yields of the quinolines. Mechanistic studies provided insights into the possible reaction intermediates and the specific role of the catalyst in the multistep cascade.

Summary: A new synthesis strategy utilizing non-nano carbon materials as dehydrogenation catalysts has been developed, allowing for control over macroscopic shape, texture, and crystallinity. By fine-tuning the synthesis, high selectivity active carbon catalysts similar to carbon nanotubes can be obtained, with significantly higher space-time yields in test reactions. This new class of carbon materials is technically scalable, reproducible, and exhibits spherical particles for easy handling.
