The partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas by using the lattice oxygen of La1-xSrxMO3 (M = Mn, Ni; x = 0-0.4) and LaMnO3-alpha F beta(beta/(3 - alpha) = 0.1) perovskite oxides was explored. Approximately 75% CO selectivity at 16% CH4 conversion with H-2/CO molar ratio of ca. 2.5 can be achieved at 800 degrees C. The stability of the perovskite structure and the reactivity/selectivity of lattice oxygen are found to be dependent on (i) B-site element, (ii) degree of substitution of La with Sr, and (iii) fluorination of the perovskite oxide.
