Although the effect of acidulated phosphate fluoride gel (APF gel) on caries reduction in permanent teeth is based on evidence, the relevance of the clinical application time is still under debate. Also, the effect of 4- versus 1-min application has not been evaluated in deciduous enamel. In a blind, crossover, in situ study of 14 days, 16 adult volunteers wore palatal appliances containing slabs of human permanent and deciduous enamel. At the beginning of each phase, the slabs were submitted to one of the following treatments: no APF application (negative control); APF gel (1.23% F) application for 1 or 4 min. Biofilm accumulation on the slab surface was allowed and the slabs were subjected eight times a day to 20% sucrose, simulating a high cariogenic challenge condition. On the 15th day of each phase, fluoride retained as CaF2 and fluorapatite (FAp) was determined on the enamel of the slabs and demineralization was assessed by cross-sectional microhardness. Fluoride as CaF2 and FAp, formed by APE gel application on the enamel slabs not subjected to the cariogenic challenge, was also determined. APF gel reduced demineralization in both enamel types (p < 0.05), but the difference between 1 and 4 min was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CaF2 and FAp formed and retained on deciduous and permanent enamel was significantly higher in APE gel groups (p < 0.05), but no significant difference was found between 1 and 4 min (p > 0.05). The findings suggest that 1 min of APF gel application provides a similar effect on inhibition of demineralization as 4 min, for both permanent and deciduous enamel. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Calcium pretreatment enhances fluoride reactivity with enamel and dentine

Manuela Da Silva Spinola, Livia Maria Andalo Tenuta

Summary: The study found that a calcium pretreatment enhances the reactivity of fluoride with enamel and dentine. Carious substrates had a greater reactivity with fluoride compared to sound substrates, confirming that increased porosity enhances the reactivity with fluoride.

Fluoride Formed on Enamel by Fluoride Varnish or Gel Application: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Mauro Antonio Dall Agnol, Carla Battiston, Livia Maria Andalo Tenuta, Jaime Aparecido Cury

Summary: Fluoride varnish (FV) and acidulated phosphate fluoride gel (APF-gel) are both effective in reducing dental caries, but FV has slower chemical reactivity. A clinical study found that FV needs to remain on dental surfaces for a longer time (>4 hours) compared to a 4-minute application of APF-gel to achieve the same reactivity.

Validation of a cariogenic biofilm model by evaluating the effect of fluoride on enamel demineralization

Lina M. Marin, Jaime A. Cury, Walter L. Siqueira

Summary: In this study, an in vitro cariogenic Streptococcus mutans biofilm model was modified and validated by assessing the dose-response effect of fluoride on enamel demineralization. The model demonstrated a dose-response effect of fluoride in influencing enamel demineralization, showing the potential for assessing novel biotechnological strategies for caries prevention.

Modulation of Streptococcus mutans Adherence to Hydroxyapatite by Engineered Salivary Peptides

Summary: This study found that modifying the protein components of the acquired enamel pellicle can influence the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to dental surfaces. Engineered salivary peptides were shown to modulate the bacterial proteome upon adherence, potentially reducing bacterial colonization and biofilm development.

Engineered Salivary Peptides Reduce Enamel Demineralization Provoked by Cariogenic S. mutans Biofilm

Summary: The engineered salivary peptide DR9-RR14 has been shown to effectively reduce enamel demineralization, but has no significant impact on biofilm biomass or the expression of cariogenic bacterial proteins. This suggests that DR9-RR14 may primarily control caries development through a physicochemical mechanism.

Summary: Fluorescent cationic starch nanoparticles (FCSNs) have been shown to penetrate enamel surface porosity of carious lesions, aiding in their detection. This study evaluated the accuracy of FCSNs in detecting occlusal caries and found them to have high sensitivity and specificity. Further clinical validation is needed.

Summary: This study explored the challenges of implementing COVID-19 related biosafety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE) from the perspectives of dental practitioners in different countries. The findings indicate that dental practitioners rely on various factors to determine the feasibility and implementation of PPE in their local practices in the absence of a unified guidance document.

Effect of pH and titratable acidity on enamel and dentine erosion

Summary: The effects of pH and titratable acidity on tooth erosion were investigated. The results showed that exposure to solutions with lower pH values caused a decrease in salivary pH, while solutions with higher titratable acidities prolonged the pH recovery time. For teeth, solutions with lower pH values and higher titratable acidities resulted in more severe early erosion.
