Summary: Contractance, or myocardial active strain energy density (MASED), is a measure of the mechanical work done per unit volume by cardiac tissue during contraction. It combines information from both stress and strain, making it an ideal candidate for measuring contractile function.

Summary: Circulating levels of miR-1, miR-495-3p, and miR-4454 are elevated in the plasma of HCM patients, with a significant correlation between miR-4454 levels and cardiac fibrosis. This suggests miR-4454 as a potential biomarker for fibrosis in these patients.

Summary: Aortic valve stenosis (AVS) is a common valve disease, but biological understanding of myocardial changes at the proteome level is still lacking. This study used high-resolution mass spectrometry to analyze FFPE human myocardial tissue samples from AVS patients, revealing significant upregulation and downregulation of multiple proteins associated with AVS-related changes such as cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, impaired mitochondria, and reduced blood supply. The findings provide a workflow for quantitative proteomics of human FFPE heart tissue and a comprehensive proteomic resource for AVS induced changes in the human myocardium.

Summary: The researchers adapted a 3D bioprinting platform for microvalve-based drop-on-demand printing of cell-laden Matrigel containing primary human muscle precursor cells, which could aid in the development of drugs against muscle wasting diseases. This new method allows for automated engineering of 3D human skeletal muscle models in microplates and functional compound screening, addressing the lack of medication for muscle wasting diseases.

Summary: The present study evaluated the feasibility of using gated blood pool single-photon emission computed tomography (GBPS) with low-dose dobutamine (LDD) stress test to assess left ventricle (LV) contractile reserve in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM). The results showed that a dobutamine dose of 10 mu g/kg/min in GBPS was sufficient to detect stress-induced changes in LV contractility in patients with ICM.

Summary: Compared to hypertensive LVH, gene-positive HCM is characterized by more severe diastolic dysfunction and larger LA size. Gene-positive HCM patients with concomitant HTN exhibit greater LV mass, more severe LVH, and more abnormal GLS, suggesting that HTN may negatively impact the progression of myocardial dysfunction in genetic HCM. LVH out-of-proportion to pressure burden in HTN patients should raise suspicion of underlying genetic HCM.

Summary: Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy can be either secondary or primary, and primary LV hypertrophy may be caused by gene mutations or abnormal substance deposition. Cardiovascular imaging, including echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance, plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of LV hypertrophy, providing important clues to the final diagnosis and guiding therapy. This consensus document by the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology provides an overview of the role of different cardiac imaging techniques in the differential diagnosis and management of LV hypertrophy.

Summary: This study found that right ventricular (RV) function and left ventricular (LV) function decrease over time in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), while left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) remains preserved. Reduced RV function is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes, and assessing RV function in early HCM disease may help prevent future cardiovascular events.

Summary: Continuous transcutaneous carbon-dioxide partial pressure (tpCO(2)) monitoring during conscious sedation in complex electrophysiological catheter ablation procedures is feasible and accurate, showing good correlation with arterial and venous blood gas analysis. This monitoring method may contribute to additional safety by detecting hypercapnia earlier and more likely than traditional half-hourly blood gas measurements.

Summary: This study compared outcomes of HFpEF patients with AF who underwent CA versus received medical therapy, finding that CA group had significantly lower arrhythmia recurrence, reduced heart failure hospitalization and death, and improved clinical and echocardiographic parameters of HFpEF. Reassessment at follow-up showed resolution of HFpEF in a higher percentage of patients in CA group compared to medical therapy group.

Summary: Pulmonary vein isolation using cryoballoon technology is an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation. However, one of the most common complications is phrenic nerve injury. This study aimed to assess the incidence, characteristics, and recovery rate of phrenic nerve injury during cryoballoon-based pulmonary vein isolation. The results showed that the majority of patients experienced recovery within 12 months.

Summary: The study found that deferring non-emergency cardiac interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increased rate of emergency cardiovascular hospitalizations, particularly among patients with valvular heart disease. These findings suggest a need for revised recommendations on the management of cardiovascular disease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential changes in baseline characteristics of symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation patients who underwent transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (M-TEER) over the past decade in a high-volume center. The results showed that patients undergoing M-TEER nowadays have lower surgical risk and are treated earlier before significant left ventricular (LV) remodeling occurs. The experience gained in the procedure has led to an increase in the number of patients with complex degenerative pathology being treated.

Summary: This study compares the characteristics and outcomes of functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) patients treated with transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) or surgical mitral valve repair (SMVr). The results show that despite higher age and comorbidity burden, TEER is associated with significantly lower in-hospital mortality and comparable functional and mitral regurgitation improvements compared to SMVr.

Summary: This study proposes an MRI-based training model for percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA). Patient-specific silicone models of the LAA were generated using MRI data, allowing for assessment of the influence of the transseptal puncture (TSP) site on the access to patient-specific LAA shapes.
