Summary: Multifunctional microspheres (SA/LM/DOX) with high drug loading and multimodal imaging capability have been developed by adsorbing silanized LM particles on sulfonated agarose microspheres (SA). These microspheres have the function of heating and accelerating drug release under an 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser, and can be tracked using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and B-scan ultrasonography (US).

Summary: This case report presents a rare complication of chronic pancreatitis, a right hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm, in a 42-year-old male patient. The patient was successfully treated with intravascular embolization. The importance of careful evaluation, early detection, and prompt treatment for pseudoaneurysm caused by chronic pancreatitis is highlighted.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term safety and efficacy of hepatic transarterial embolization (TAE) in patients with symptomatic polycystic liver disease (PLD). The results showed that TAE using microspheres and microcoils is a safe and effective treatment that improves symptoms and reduces hepatic cyst volume in PLD patients.

Summary: Modifying tissue stress and improving drug exposure in target organs can maximize the therapeutic outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma. By using degradable porous microspheres, drugs can be efficiently delivered to the tumor site while gradually occluding the hepatic artery. The combination therapy of doxorubicin and tirapazamine shows a synergistic anti-proliferation effect on liver cancer cells under hypoxia. In an orthotopic liver cancer model in rats, porous doxorubicin-tirapazamine microspheres effectively suppress tumor growth and induce tissue necrosis.

Summary: We developed multimodal imaging nano-assembled microspheres (NAMs) that can be visualized under CT/MR and help determine the location of embolic microspheres during postoperative review. Compared with commercially available DC Bead and CalliSpheres microspheres, NAMs showed similarities in drug loading capacity, drug release profiles, diameter variation, and morphological characteristics. Therefore, NAMs have a promising application prospect in transcatheter arterial chemoembolization treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of ethanol-soaked gelatin sponges (ESG) and microspheres in managing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with hepatic arterioportal fistulas (APFs). The findings showed that ESG demonstrated a higher objective response rate (ORR) and longer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in HCC patients with APFs.

Summary: In recent years, transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) has been widely used in noninvasive vascular interventional therapy for various diseases. This study developed a novel magnetic embolic agent, Fe3O4-loaded hydrophilic poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate -acrylic acid) microspheres (FPHA-Ms), through inverse suspension polymerization and sequential in situ co-precipitation method. The characteristics and functionalities of FPHA-Ms, including morphology, particle size distribution, water content, elasticity, drug loading and eluting capacity, biosafety, MRI detectability, and embolic efficacy, were comprehensively evaluated. The results demonstrated that FPHA-Ms possessed desirable properties for clinical vessel embolization, drug loading, and MRI tracing.

Summary: The safety, feasibility, and efficacy of drug-eluting beads transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) with doxorubicin-loaded CalliSpheres beads (CB) for unresectable renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were evaluated in this study. The results showed that DEB-TACE with doxorubicin-loaded CB is a safe, feasible, and effective palliative treatment option for patients with unresectable RCC, improving overall survival and progression-free survival.
