Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hemicellulose-cellulose interactions on the anisotropic structure of the bacterial cellulose (BC) ribbon network. BC-arabinoxylan (BC-AX) and BC-mixed linkage glucan (BC-MLG) composites were prepared and their mechanical/rheological behavior was evaluated. The results showed that hemicelluloses had limited influence on the crystallinity of BC, but significantly affected the anisotropic behavior of BC hydrogels in compression and stress-relaxation tests.

Summary: Green seaweeds have the potential to be a climate-friendly renewable resource in the new bioeconomy, enabling green growth in coastal regions of developing countries. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that mainly cellulose I-alpha was present in green seaweeds, especially C. linum with a large crystallite diameter. This suggests that green seaweeds, particularly C. linum, have promise as a source for manufacturing novel cellulose-based materials.

Summary: The glycosylation of egg white proteins with maltodextrin was studied. The glycosylated egg white proteins showed improved gel properties, such as increased hardness, water holding capacity, rheological parameters, and finer gel microstructures. The protein structures were unfolded due to glycosylation, as observed by changes in content of exposed sulfhydryl group and β-sheet, decreased crystallinity, thermal denaturation temperature, and enthalpy. The study provides insights into glycosylation mechanism and a convenient approach to improve the gel properties of egg white proteins.

Summary: The glycosylation of egg white proteins with maltodextrin was studied and the resulting glycosylated proteins showed improved gel properties such as increased hardness, water holding capacity, rheological parameters, and finer microstructures. The protein structures were unfolded due to extended glycosylation, as evidenced by increased exposed sulfhydryl groups and beta-sheet content, decreased crystallinity, thermal denaturation temperature, and enthalpy. The gel properties were correlated with the structural changes. Overall, this study provides insights into the mechanism of glycosylation and offers a convenient approach to enhance the gel properties of egg white proteins in the food industry.

Summary: Different synthesis approaches and conditions for misfit layer compounds (MLCs) in the ternary systems V-Se-Bi, V-Se-Pb, and V-Se-Sn were compared. The best results were achieved with NH4Cl as a crystallisation aid, moderate annealing temperatures, and longer annealing durations. The study discussed the compositions, morphology, and structure, and found that either plate-like or tubelike MLC crystals could be obtained depending on the stacking sequence of the compounds. The structural properties of MLC (PbSe)1+delta VSe2 were comparable to the corresponding ferecrystals in the literature.

Summary: Liver disease is a major cause of global mortality, and identifying biomarkers for diagnosing its progression is crucial for improving outcomes. Targeted mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for verifying biomarker candidates and clinical applications, particularly for glycoproteins translation. However, the limitation of analyzing only one sample per run has become apparent. In this study, a high-throughput intact N-glycopeptides quantification strategy was developed, allowing the validation of 20 samples per run with an average analysis time of 3 minutes per sample. The strategy was applied in a cohort of 461 serum samples and identified a panel of 10 IgG N-glycopeptides that have strong clinical utility in evaluating the severity of liver disease.
