Trautmann-focused mastoidectomy for a simple, safe presigmoid approach: technical note

Kuniaki Tanahashi, Kenji Uda, Yoshio Araki, Kazuhito Takeuchi, Jungsu Choo, Lushun Chalise, Kazuya Motomura, Fumiharu Ohka, Toshihiko Wakabayashi, Atsushi Natsume

Summary: The authors proposed a method of minimized mastoidectomy focused on exposing Trautmann's triangle as the corridor for the PSA, aiming to simplify the procedure, enhance safety, and maintain an adequate operative view. This technique was demonstrated in cadaver dissections and operative cases, showing potential as a useful option for the PSA.

Ran Tomomasa, Yasuhito Arai, Reika Kawabata-Iwakawa, Kohei Fukuoka, Yoshiko Nakano, Natsuko Hama, Satoshi Nakata, Nozomi Suzuki, Yukitomo Ishi, Shinya Tanaka, Jun A. Takahashi, Yoshiaki Yuba, Mitsutaka Shiota, Atsushi Natsume, Michihiro Kurimoto, Yoshiki Shiba, Mikiko Aoki, Kazuki Nabeshima, Toshiyuki Enomoto, Tooru Inoue, Junya Fujimura, Akihide Kondo, Takashi Yao, Naoki Okura, Takanori Hirose, Atsushi Sasaki, Masahiko Nishiyama, Koichi Ichimura, Tatsuhiro Shibata, Junko Hirato, Hideaki Yokoo, Sumihito Nobusawa

Summary: ELTMDs are high-grade tumors with mesenchymal differentiation, harboring fusion genes involving C11orf95. Although they show genetic and morphological associations with supratentorial ependymomas, they cannot be classified as ependymomas. Further analysis of more cases is needed to clarify their characteristics.

Summary: There is currently a lack of accurate mass screening methods for early detection of central nervous system tumors. Research suggests that liquid biopsy based on urinary microRNAs may be an effective screening method, with high sensitivity and specificity in differentiating patients from noncancer individuals.

Effects of insular resection on interactions between cardiac interoception and emotion recognition

Yuri Terasawa, Kazuya Motomura, Atsushi Natsume, Kentaro Iijima, Lushun Chalise, Junko Sugiura, Hiroyasu Yamamoto, Kyohei Koyama, Toshihiko Wakabayashi, Satoshi Umeda

Summary: The study investigated the role of the insular cortex in cardiac interoception and emotion recognition. While no significant difference in interoceptive accuracy was observed, there were significant associations between changes in interoceptive accuracy and sensitivity to expressions of anger and happiness post-operation. This suggests that removal of the insula affects the recognition of emotions like anger and happiness through interoceptive processing.

Summary: This study used a mathematical model to uncover therapeutic strategies for IDHmutLGGs and identified precision medicine approaches based on different genetic alterations. It highlighted the importance of prompt adjuvant chemoradiotherapy for small IDHmut-LGGs and the differential treatment needs for large IDHmut-LGGs based on genetic subtypes.

Lack of GD3 synthase (St8sia1) attenuates malignant properties of gliomas in genetically engineered mouse model

Yuki Ohkawa, Pu Zhang, Hiroyuki Momota, Akira Kato, Noboru Hashimoto, Yuhsuke Ohmi, Robiul H. Bhuiyan, Yesmin Farhana, Atsushi Natsume, Toshihiko Wakabayashi, Keiko Furukawa, Koichi Furukawa

Summary: This study revealed that deficiency of GD3 synthase attenuated the progression of gliomas in a mouse model, leading to prolonged lifespan and low-grade pathology in generated gliomas. It also showed that GD3S enhances glioma progression through the Ap2 alpha-MMP9 axis, with associated alterations in gene expression levels.

The long non-coding RNA SPRIGHTLY and its binding partner PTBP1 regulate exon 5 skipping of SMYD3 transcripts in group 4 medulloblastomas

Bongyong Lee, Keisuke Katsushima, Rudramani Pokhrel, Menglang Yuan, Stacie Stapleton, George Jallo, Robert J. Wechsler-Reya, Charles G. Eberhart, Animesh Ray, Ranjan J. Perera

Summary: SPRIGHTLY lncRNA is upregulated in group 4 medulloblastoma (G4 MB) and regulates cell proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis through interaction with SMYD3 and PTPB1 protein. Deletion of SPRIGHTLY lncRNA results in smaller G4 MB tumors.

Yoshitaka Nagashima, Yusuke Nishimura, Shoichi Haimoto, Kaoru Eguchi, Takayuki Awaya, Ryo Ando, Sho Akahori, Masahito Hara, Atsushi Natsume

Summary: Vertebral hemangiomas are the most common benign vertebral tumors that are usually asymptomatic. Aggressive subtypes may require surgical removal, with attention needed on the proximity to the thoracic descending aorta and spinal cord tissues. Navigation-guided surgery allows for real-time monitoring of tumor resection, reducing residual tumor and ensuring safe removal.

The long noncoding RNA lnc-HLX-2-7 is oncogenic in Group 3 medulloblastomas

Keisuke Katsushima, Bongyong Lee, Haritha Kunhiraman, Cuncong Zhong, Rabi Murad, Jun Yin, Ben Liu, Alexandra Garancher, Ignacio Gonzalez-Gomez, Hector L. Monforte, Stacie Stapleton, Rajeev Vibhakar, Chetan Bettegowda, Robert J. Wechsler-Reya, George Jallo, Eric Raabe, Charles G. Eberhart, Ranjan J. Perera

Summary: The novel lncRNA lnc-HLX-2-7 is highly upregulated in Group 3 MB, playing a crucial role in cell proliferation, tumor formation, and apoptosis. It modulates oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and sirtuin signaling pathways in MB. Furthermore, lnc-HLX-2-7 expression is regulated by the MYC oncogene and can be decreased by the small-molecule bromodomain 4 inhibitor JQ1.
