Summary: Red wine pomace products have antimicrobial activities and may have an anti-Listeria effect. The invasion of Listeria strains in intestinal cell monolayers was found to be inhibited by WPP, with different effects depending on the strain and cell line. WPPs were able to protect the integrity of the intestinal barrier through modification of cell-cell junction protein expression.

Summary: Optimizing the biomarker combination in liquid biopsies is important for personalized medicine. A method was developed to purify and quantify circulating cell-free mRNAs in plasma samples using RT-qPCR. Three colorectal cancer biomarkers (B2M, TIMP-1, and CLU) were found to have significantly higher mRNA levels in plasma of metastatic colorectal cancer patients compared to healthy individuals. The analysis of the sum of these mRNA levels showed high discriminatory performance between the two groups.

Summary: The newly synthesized sulfonamide chalcone, SSC185, exhibited selective cytotoxicity against colorectal cancer cell line SW-620. Its cytotoxic effect was attributed to the induction of cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and cell death by apoptosis or necroptosis, depending on the concentration used.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of symmetric cyanine dyes and evaluated their potential as anticancer agents. The dyes demonstrated high antiproliferative effects on several cancer cell lines in the absence of light, with one dye derived from benzoxazole showing the most promise. It had a high selectivity index and could arrest the cell cycle.

Summary: NCOR1 is essential for colorectal cancer cell growth, and its depletion leads to cellular senescence. Transcriptomic signatures confirm this and predict a potential pro-invasive phenotype. It plays a novel role in preventing cancer-associated senescence and could be a target for controlling colon cancer progression.

Summary: The Mediterranean diet is associated with lower incidence of cardio-vascular and cerebrovascular diseases as well as cancer. Extra virgin olive oil, with its phenolic components such as hydroxytyrosol, has been attributed with many healthful effects. Recent studies show that extra virgin olive oil and hydroxytyrosol modulate epigenetic mechanisms, specifically DNA methylation, in human tissues. In this study, colorectal cancer cells treated with hydroxytyrosol demonstrated an increase in global DNA methylation, suggesting a potential gene target for this compound.

Summary: This study evaluated the expression of miR-509-5p in colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines and tissues and found a significant reduction compared to normal tissues. Upregulation of miR-509-5p inhibited cell viability and suppressed the expression of SLC7A11. Overexpression of miR-509-5p also increased levels of MDA and iron, suggesting its role in promoting ferroptosis.

Summary: The study found that boric acid inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in the human colon adenocarcinoma cell line SW-480, in both 2D and 3D culture conditions. Additionally, qRT-PCR analysis revealed that the observed apoptotic process was associated with the TNF signaling pathway. Boric acid may be considered a potential anti-cancer agent candidate for colon cancer treatment.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common tumor disease, and the use of naturally derived products for its treatment can be beneficial. The research focused on the encapsulation of ethyl protocatechuate (PCAEE) in solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) to assess its effectiveness. SLN prepared with Tween 80 showed promising physicochemical properties and encapsulation efficiency, effectively penetrated and released PCAEE, and exhibited greater cytotoxicity on tumor cells. Therefore, further studies on this formulation for colorectal cancer treatment are suggested.

Summary: In this study, low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMWF) was found to enhance the anti-cancer effects of fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy through different mechanisms in colorectal cancer cells. LMWF enhanced cell viability suppression by inducing cell cycle arrest and late apoptosis in HCT116 cells, and by activating multiple signaling pathways in Caco-2 cells. Moreover, LMWF also inhibited tumor cell migration through specific signaling pathways in both cell types.
