Summary: Two large European cohort studies found that circulating calcium concentrations were associated with colorectal cancer risk. In the EPIC cohort, total serum calcium was not associated with colorectal cancer, while in the UK-BB cohort, serum ionized calcium was inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between PFAS and thyroid cancer risk in Finnish maternity cohort. The results showed no clear association between most PFAS and thyroid cancer risk, except for PFHxS which was inversely associated. There were suggestive increased risks for PFOA, PFOS, and EtFOSAA among those diagnosed at ages <40 years.

Summary: Glyceraldehyde-derived advanced glycation end products (glycer-AGEs) are associated with the development and progression of colorectal cancer due to their oxidative and inflammatory properties. This study found that circulating glycer-AGEs concentrations are positively associated with both colorectal cancer-specific and all-cause mortality. The association between glycer-AGEs and colorectal cancer-specific mortality is stronger in patients with distal colon cancer.

Summary: High prediagnostic intake of cheese and dietary calcium may be associated with increased survival among colorectal cancer patients. This study suggests that manipulating diet could contribute to the development of novel therapies against CRC, although replication studies are needed before nutritional interventions can be implemented.

Summary: This study investigated the association between comprehensive coagulation markers and clinicopathological characteristics in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. The results showed that fibrinogen and d-dimer levels were independently associated with high-risk PCa and significantly correlated with multiple clinical parameters. These coagulation markers may serve as independent prognostic biomarkers for risk stratification and guide personalized treatment strategies in PCa.

Summary: This study compared the detection rates of prostate cancer (PCa) and clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) by biparametric (bp-) and multiparameter magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). The findings showed that bpMRI and mpMRI had similar diagnostic efficacies in detecting PCa and csPCa, but mpMRI detected more cases in the tPSA interval of 10-20 ng/ml.

Summary: Women have better cancer-specific survival than men following haematological malignancies. The effect of reproductive factors on prognosis in women remains unknown and population-based studies are needed. This study found that parity and high age at first birth were initially associated with better survival, but the associations were attenuated after adjusting for other factors. The associations with reproductive factors were non-significant across subtypes of haematological malignancy. Additionally, there was a tendency of higher excess mortality for an increasing number of boys compared to girls among women with three or more children.

Summary: This study investigates the time trends of cervical cancer incidence and net survival in Sweden from 1960 to 2014. The results show that the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) decreased until 2000 and then remained stagnant, while adenocarcinoma continued to increase. The 5-year net survival improved overall, but decreased with increasing age and higher stage at diagnosis. There was no statistically significant difference in net survival between SCC and adenocarcinoma in recent years.

Summary: When analyzing cohort data, it is common to only consider one time-scale and include other time-scales as fixed covariates. This simulation study demonstrates that only modeling one time-scale can lead to biased estimates of survival proportions and hazard ratios, especially when there are non-proportional hazards on the second time-scale. Including non-proportional hazards and interactions with the time-scale is advisable when modeling only one time-scale.

Summary: The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent mitigation strategies have led to a decline in new cancer cases in the Nordic countries, with Sweden experiencing the most significant reduction. Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of assuming missing N and M as N0 and M0 on available TNM stage, stage distribution, and stage-specific relative survival in cancer patients. The results showed that assuming N0M0 for missing N and M had minor effects on stage-specific one-year relative survival, especially for high completeness of TNM registrations. Therefore, while complete TNM information is preferred, assuming N0M0 for missing N and M may be reasonable in future studies based on Nordic cancer registries. Rating: 8/10

Summary: This study analyzed the national birth and cancer registers data in Sweden from 1973-2017, and calculated the incidence rates of pregnancy-associated cancer (PAC) during pregnancy and up to 1 year post-delivery. The results showed that advanced maternal age, smoking, nulliparity, and non-immigrant background were significant risk factors for PAC. The increasing incidence of PAC over time was partly attributed to the increase in maternal age.

Summary: Cancer patients had a higher risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 during the first wave of the pandemic when testing availability was limited. Throughout 2020, recently treated cancer patients were more likely to test positive. The risks of severe COVID-19 outcomes such as hospitalisation, intensive care, and death were higher among cancer patients, with recent treatment and haematologic malignancy being the strongest risk factors.
