Recent studies have suggested an association between high dietary intake of calcium and the risk of prostate cancer. Calcium-rich diet has been suggested to affect the serum levels of Vitamin D, and thereby promote cancer. We conducted the largest study of the association between prediagnostic serum levels of calcium and the risk of prostate cancer. We examined the incidence of prostate cancer in relation to prediagnostic serum calcium levels in a prospective cohort study of 22,391 healthy Swedish men, of which 1,539 incident cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed during the 30 years of follow-up until December 2006. Serum levels of calcium were measured at baseline, and categorized into quartiles. Cox regression was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). We found no evidence of an association between prediagnostic serum levels of calcium and risk of prostate cancer (HR for trend = 0.99 [95% CI;0.94-1.03]). However, a moderate significant negative association was seen in men with a BMI above 25 and aged below 45 years at baseline (Highest vs. lowest quartile, HR = 0.63 [95% CI;0.40-0.99]). These data do not support the hypothesis that high serum calcium levels is a risk factor for prostate cancer. On the contrary, the data suggest that high serum levels of calcium in young overweight men may be a marker for a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer.

Reproductive history, as measured by parity, age at first birth and sex of offspring, and cancer-specific survival after a haematological malignancy

Anna L. Johansson, Paul W. Dickman, Sandra Eloranta, Magnus Bjorkholm

Summary: Women have better cancer-specific survival than men following haematological malignancies. The effect of reproductive factors on prognosis in women remains unknown and population-based studies are needed. This study found that parity and high age at first birth were initially associated with better survival, but the associations were attenuated after adjusting for other factors. The associations with reproductive factors were non-significant across subtypes of haematological malignancy. Additionally, there was a tendency of higher excess mortality for an increasing number of boys compared to girls among women with three or more children.

Time Trends for Incidence and Net Survival of Cervical Cancer in Sweden 1960-2014-A Nationwide Population-Based Study

Avalon Sundqvist, Louise Moberg, Paul W. Dickman, Thomas Hogberg, Christer Borgfeldt

Summary: This study investigates the time trends of cervical cancer incidence and net survival in Sweden from 1960 to 2014. The results show that the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) decreased until 2000 and then remained stagnant, while adenocarcinoma continued to increase. The 5-year net survival improved overall, but decreased with increasing age and higher stage at diagnosis. There was no statistically significant difference in net survival between SCC and adenocarcinoma in recent years.

Potential bias introduced by not including multiple time-scales in survival analysis: a simulation study

Nurgul Batyrbekova, Hannah Bower, Paul W. Dickman, Robert Szulkin, Paul C. Lambert, Therese M. -L. Andersson

Summary: When analyzing cohort data, it is common to only consider one time-scale and include other time-scales as fixed covariates. This simulation study demonstrates that only modeling one time-scale can lead to biased estimates of survival proportions and hazard ratios, especially when there are non-proportional hazards on the second time-scale. Including non-proportional hazards and interactions with the time-scale is advisable when modeling only one time-scale.

Johansson, Siri Laronningen, Charlotte Wessel Skovlund, Marnar Frioheim Kristiansen, Lina Steinrud Morch, Soren Friis, Tom Borge Johannesen, Tor Age Myklebust, Anna Skog, David Pettersson, Helgi Birgisson, Anni Virtanen, Nea Malila, Janne Pitkaniemi, Tomas Tanskanen, Laufey Tryggvadottir, Giske Ursin, Mats Lambe

Summary: The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent mitigation strategies have led to a decline in new cancer cases in the Nordic countries, with Sweden experiencing the most significant reduction. Possible explanations include the severity of the pandemic, temporary halting of screening activities, and changes in healthcare seeking behavior.

Summary: This study found that consumption of sweetened beverages was associated with an increased risk of differentiated thyroid cancer, while a dietary pattern characterized by alcohol consumption was associated with a decreased risk of thyroid cancer.

Survival in Swedish patients with systemic sclerosis: a nationwide population-based matched cohort study

Majd Bairkdar, Enoch Yi-Tung Chen, Paul W. Dickman, Roger Hesselstrand, Helga Westerlind, Marie Holmqvist

Summary: This study conducted a nationwide cohort study to investigate the survival patterns of patients with incident systemic sclerosis (SSc) in Sweden. The results showed that the survival rate of SSc patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2015 was significantly lower compared to the general population, despite advances in understanding and diagnosing the disease.

Influence of various assumptions for the individual TNM components on the TNM stage using Nordic cancer registry data

Gerda Engholm, Frida E. Lundberg, Simon M. Konig, Elinborg Olafsdottir, Tom B. Johannesen, David Pettersson, Lina S. Morch, Anna L. V. Johansson, Soren Friis

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of assuming missing N and M as N0 and M0 on available TNM stage, stage distribution, and stage-specific relative survival in cancer patients. The results showed that assuming N0M0 for missing N and M had minor effects on stage-specific one-year relative survival, especially for high completeness of TNM registrations. Therefore, while complete TNM information is preferred, assuming N0M0 for missing N and M may be reasonable in future studies based on Nordic cancer registries. Rating: 8/10

Summary: Phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare fibroepithelial lesions classified as benign, borderline or malignant. Current clinical practice in managing these tumors shows considerable variation, indicating a need for education and further research to establish appropriate surgical margins, follow-up time, and a multidisciplinary approach.

Risk factors for the increasing incidence of pregnancy-associated cancer in Sweden - a population-based study

Frida E. Lundberg, Hanne Stensheim, Gustav J. Ullenhag, Hanna Milerad Sahlgren, Kristina Lindemann, Irma Fredriksson, Anna L. V. Johansson

Summary: This study analyzed the national birth and cancer registers data in Sweden from 1973-2017, and calculated the incidence rates of pregnancy-associated cancer (PAC) during pregnancy and up to 1 year post-delivery. The results showed that advanced maternal age, smoking, nulliparity, and non-immigrant background were significant risk factors for PAC. The increasing incidence of PAC over time was partly attributed to the increase in maternal age.

Total thyroidectomy: reduction in postoperative hypoparathyroidism

Rasmus Reinke, Stefano Christian Londero, Martin Almquist, Lars Rejnmark, Lars Rolighed

Summary: Restricting total thyroidectomy to surgeons who also perform parathyroid operations significantly reduces the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism, especially in patients with Graves' disease. Therefore, it is recommended to centralize complex thyroid surgeries to centers and surgeons with extensive experience in parathyroid surgery.

Summary: Cancer patients had a higher risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 during the first wave of the pandemic when testing availability was limited. Throughout 2020, recently treated cancer patients were more likely to test positive. The risks of severe COVID-19 outcomes such as hospitalisation, intensive care, and death were higher among cancer patients, with recent treatment and haematologic malignancy being the strongest risk factors.
