Summary: This study compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of bloodstream infections in cancer patients with febrile neutropenia with and without HIV infection, revealing that HIV infection affects the epidemiology and clinical presentation of patients, leading to higher mortality. However, HIV infection itself was not associated with mortality.

Summary: The study found that the spread of ESBL producers in the community has an impact on the management of patients with bloodstream infections involving Enterobacterales in emergency departments. The rate of appropriate treatment decreased, and using combination therapy was more appropriate than monotherapy.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors for multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection among hospitalized patients in southern Saudi Arabia. The study found that 66.8% of patients were infected with multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae strains. Factors such as gender, age, intensive care unit admission, invasive medical devices, and chronic illness were significantly associated with the infection.

Summary: The antimicrobial resistance of NTS in children has increased progressively in the past decade in Taiwan, with different serogroups exhibiting different resistance patterns. Infants showed the highest risk of acquiring a third-generation cephalosporin-resistant NTS infection, highlighting the need for continual surveillance among children with NTS in Taiwan.

Summary: Brevicidine, a bacterial cyclic lipopeptide, exhibits potent and selective antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative pathogens. However, little was known about its mechanism of action before our investigations. We found that brevicidine exerts its bactericidal activity by interacting with lipopolysaccharide, targeting phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin, and disrupting the proton motive force of bacteria.

Summary: Fever in neutropenia is a life-threatening complication of chemotherapy in pediatric cancer patients. Over two decades, there has been no relevant trend in the antibiotic susceptibility patterns, with different recommended antibiotic regimens showing comparable antimicrobial activity.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors predicting mortality in febrile neutropenic patients with bacteremia. The results showed that pulse rate, quick SOFA score, inappropriate antimicrobial treatment, Gram-negative bacteremia, bacteremia of non-urinary origin, and advancing age were independent predictors of mortality. Local antibiotic susceptibility profiles should be integrated into therapeutic recommendations, and infection control and prevention measures should be prioritized.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of follow-up blood cultures (FUBC) positivity in predicting outcomes among patients with neutropenia and carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bloodstream infections (CRGNBSI). Among the 155 patients in the study cohort, the 30-day mortality rate was 47.7%, and 43.8% of patients had persistent bacteremia. Patients with persistent bacteremia had a higher mortality rate compared to those without.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of patients with bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Pseudomonas spp. in a tertiary hospital. It found that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the third most commonly identified cause among gram-negative microorganisms causing BSI, with a high mortality rate. The study also identified factors associated with mortality and observed changes in antimicrobial resistance patterns after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: Mechanical ventilation, surgery, and hemodialysis are independent risk factors for multidrug-resistant bloodstream infections in critically ill trauma patients. Carbapenemase (KPC) is the main mechanism of resistance, and cross-transmission may contribute to its spread.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the effects of resistance to third-generation cephalosporins in hospitalized patients with Enterobacterales bloodstream infection in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that patients infected with drug-resistant bacteria had increased mortality compared to uninfected patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and source of infection in cancer patients with FN in a tertiary care hospital. It found that most patients were males with hematologic malignancies, and gram-positive bacteria were the most common infectious agents. Empiric therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics was appropriate.

Summary: The combination of flomoxef and amikacin shows synergistic effects in bacterial killing and prevention of amikacin resistance. It effectively kills a majority of Enterobacterales isolates with a range of flomoxef/amikacin MICs, making it a potentially clinically effective regimen for the empirical treatment of neonatal sepsis in LMIC settings. Further assessment in a clinical trial is recommended.

Summary: Survival in patients with hematological malignancies has improved due to advancements in cancer treatment and supportive care, but complications such as mucositis, fever, and bloodstream infections still occur frequently. Understanding the connection between mucositis and infection is crucial for improving care for this growing patient population.
