The Adriatic stock of European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) has experienced large interannual demographic fluctuations over the last 30 years, with a severe decline beginning in 1991 and continuing until 1997. In the present study, six microsatellite loci were used on a time series collection of otoliths and scales from sampling locations of northern (Chioggia) and southern (Vieste) Adriatic Sea, with the aim to investigate the genetic effects of these stock biomass fluctuations. The northern samples showed significant reduction in observed heterozygosity (H-O) and mean number of alleles (N-a) that explain the genetic diversity variation, while the same parameters turned out to be more stable in the southern samples. In addition, we detected the presence of a genetic bottleneck and low effective population size (N-e) values in several northern samples. Even if the northern and southern Adriatic sardine samples belong to the same genetic stock, the more pronounced decrease in genetic variability recorded in the northern sample led us to speculate that a more intensive fishing pressure and a more pronounced oceanographic isolation of this area could have accentuated the effects of the genetic bottleneck.

Summary: The study focused on the macroscopic, histological, and biometric analysis of European hake females in GSA 17 (Central-North Adriatic Sea) from 2013 to 2015. Reproductive parameters such as spawning season, length at first maturity, and fecundity were analyzed, providing valuable information for sustainable resource management. This research contributes to a better understanding of the European hake population in the overfished Central-North Adriatic Sea region.

Summary: The study found that adaptation measures currently focus more on enhancing ecological resilience rather than social resilience in the context of climate change, indicating a greater emphasis on management adaptation. In addition, social adaptation measures are more responsive and used outside the context of climate change, with a lack of centralized planning and organization in the implementation of stakeholder adaptations.

Summary: The study observed length-weight relationships for six elasmobranch species from the Adriatic Sea, using data collected as part of a monitoring program targeting bycatch on pelagic pair trawlers. Linear regression analysis on log-transformed data was used to estimate intercept and slope for describing the length-weight relationship of each species.

Summary: The Mediterranean Sea has a long history of fishery exploitation, leading to declines in elasmobranch populations. This study applied Local Ecological Knowledge of fishers to study the behavioral traits of elasmobranch species in different areas of the Mediterranean Sea, providing new insights and validating the reliability of this approach for future research.

A 14-year time series of marine megafauna bycatch in the Italian midwater pair trawl fishery

Summary: This study utilizes three datasets collected between 2006 and 2019 to assess the impact of fisheries bycatch on marine megafauna in one of the main Italian fisheries. The datasets provide valuable insights on estimating total incidental capture and trends in relative abundance over time for species of conservation concern, contributing to improved species conservation and fishery management.

Understanding the Dynamics of Ancillary Pelagic Species in the Adriatic Sea

Summary: The status of fishery resources in the Mediterranean Sea is critical, with most stocks overexploited. Surplus Production Models are shown to be effective in increasing the number of assessed stocks, particularly in the Adriatic basin. For European sprat, the AMSY model is the most robust, while CMSY or SPiCT models are preferred for horse mackerel species. Age-structured assessments are still the most powerful approach, but SPMs have proven to be a powerful tool in data-limited contexts.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and abundance of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus in the Central Adriatic Sea, and how they are influenced by environmental and fishery variables. By standardizing Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE), the variability not directly related to fish abundance was removed. Significant drivers of catch distribution were found to be bathymetry, fishing pressure, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. The predictions from this study provide valuable information for evaluating the status of this important marine resource.

Summary: In this study, chromosome-specific DNA libraries of C. calyptratus were obtained through chromosome flow sorting, and these libraries were compared with the genomes of three other squamate reptiles. The ancestral syntenic regions in the C. calyptratus chromosomes were identified. PCR-assisted mapping indicated that chromosome 5 may be the sex chromosome pair in C. calyptratus. The comparative chromosome map generated in this study can be used as the basis for future genome assembly and evolutionary studies of chameleons.

Seasonal Trophic Ecology and Diet Shift in the Common Sole Solea solea in the Central Adriatic Sea

Summary: This study analysed the trophic ecology of the common sole, a commercially important species in Europe, at the seasonal scale. The results showed significant seasonal changes in diet, particularly for females during the reproductive cycle. The analysis of stomach contents and stable isotopes revealed that the common sole consumed prey with higher energetic content before spawning, despite its opportunistic feeding behavior as a benthophagous species.

Summary: The common angel shark, a critically endangered species, has been extirpated from the Adriatic Sea due to intense fishing. However, a recent sighting of a juvenile suggests that this area may serve as an important habitat for early life stages of the shark.
