Summary: Phosphorus in lake sediments exists in diverse forms, often associated with metals, minerals, and organic matter. Understanding the composition and vulnerability of sediment phosphorus helps advance our knowledge of in-lake phosphorus retention and remobilization processes. In this study, phosphorus composition in surficial sediments was assessed across 236 lakes in Canada, revealing significant variations across different ecozones. Factors such as soil types in the watershed and the chemical composition of lake water and sediments were found to be critical in determining sediment phosphorus speciation.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal dynamics of freshwater lake ice and its interactions with air and snow in two small subarctic lakes. The results show that freeze-up occurs later and ice growth is faster in the deeper lake due to cold water temperatures beneath the ice. Air temperature variability has a significant influence on the thermal regimes of ice and snow, especially in the deeper lake.

Summary: Lakes can reflect environmental changes caused by climate change and human activities. This study assessed the abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria (PPB) in 413 lakes in southern Canada and developed a fecal multi-indicator model to predict the presence of PPB in thousands of lakes. The results showed higher fecal multi-indicator abundances in the Prairies and Boreal Plains compared to other ecozones.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal changes in the ecosystem status of the National Key Ecological Function Zones (NKEFZ) in China from 2000 to 2019. The overall ecosystem quality of these zones improved, but there were disparities in changes related to ecosystem services. Water conservation services exhibited a decreasing trend, while soil conservation and windbreak and sand fixation services showed a steady improvement. The research highlighted the challenges in the construction and preservation of the NKEFZ and emphasized the need to leverage natural resources for eco-friendly economic industries.

Summary: Weight of evidence (WoE) evaluations have been the standard method for determining EDCs for more than a decade. A new approach based on Key Characteristics (KCs) has been proposed, but it ignores the WoE literature and lacks scientific rigor. The KC approach is inconsistent, unreliable, and lacks means for reaching negative conclusions or distinguishing EDCs from non-EDCs.

Summary: Lake ice is important for local communities and can indicate climate change. Satellite remote sensing data is increasingly used due to reduced ground observations. This study models lake ice properties using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and snow microwave radiative transfer (SMRT) model. The results reveal the impact of ice properties on backscatter throughout the ice season and the possibility of developing retrieval algorithms for ice-water interface roughness.

Summary: This study examines patents related to electric vehicle (EV) technology from 1970 to 2016 to understand the key characteristics and trends of its rapid development. Using text mining, clustering, and social network analysis, the study identifies the main holders and development trajectory of EV technology. The research finds that safely and quickly charging batteries and distributing energy to storage units is a major concern, involving battery technology, charging facilities, and power control systems. Wireless charging technology is identified as the research frontier of EV technology.

Summary: The rate of cardiovascular disease has decreased in Canada due to lifestyle improvements and medical advancements, but it has increased among Indigenous populations. Indigenous patient support services play an important role in improving healthcare access and management, but there are gaps in consistent access to culturally specific services.

Summary: The concept of key characteristics (KCs) has been developed to identify carcinogenic hazards and has now been applied to identify cardiovascular (CV) toxicants. This study identified 12 KCs of CV toxicants, divided into those affecting cardiac tissue, the vascular system, or both. These KCs can be used to identify potential CV toxicants and evaluate CV toxicity in a more comprehensive and standardized manner.

Summary: Early detection and comprehensive monitoring of inland water algal blooms are crucial for effective management and mitigation of potential impacts. Satellite Earth Observation technology has greatly enhanced algal bloom monitoring capabilities. Studies on three Canadian lakes have shown widespread blooms with varying intensity and duration, emphasizing the importance of utilizing multiple bloom indices for accurate assessment.

Summary: In the context of long duration space exploration, the coordinated efforts of multiple teams are crucial for success. However, research on how to best coordinate these teams and prepare them for effective collaboration across time and space is limited. This study uses qualitative data from expert interviews and thematic analysis techniques to identify key factors affecting teamwork within and between teams. The findings provide guidance for spaceflight organizations and others seeking to implement multiteam systems in complex environments.
