There is much evidence supporting the role of telomeres in cancer pathogenesis, however the studies that investigated the association between telomere length and skin cancer risk provided inconsistent results. To help clarify this issue, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published papers on the association between peripheral leukocytes telomere length (PLTL) and the risk of cutaneous melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). We calculated summary relative risks (SRR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) using random effect models with maximum likelihood estimates, and explored causes of between-studies heterogeneity of risk estimates. We included 1629 cutaneous melanoma and 1439 NMSC from eight independent studies published until March 2015. The SRR of cutaneous melanoma for those in the lowest (vs. highest) category of PLTL distribution was 0.25 (95% CI 0.09-0.67). The results were less clear for NMSC, with two studies reporting no association and one study showing an increase in risk for those in the lowest (vs. highest) category of PLTL distribution. For both cutaneous melanoma and NMSC, the between-studies heterogeneity was large, mainly due to inclusion of hospital-based case-control studies. Our meta-analysis shows evidence of an association between short PLTL and reduced risk for cutaneous melanoma. (C) 2015 Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology. Oncological and functional impact of adjuvant treatments after open partial laryngeal surgery: a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis

Summary: The role of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) after open partial laryngeal surgery (OPLS) in terms of oncology and function remains controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, and the outcomes of OPLS patients with and without PORT for laryngeal cancer were summarized. The meta-analysis of 10 studies showed no significant difference in overall survival between OPLS patients who did and did not receive PORT, except for a higher incidence of complications in the PORT cohort in one study.

Platinum-based chemotherapy and PARP inhibitors for patients with a germline BRCA pathogenic variant and advanced breast cancer (LATER-BC): retrospective multicentric analysis of post-progression treatments

Summary: Patients with germinal BRCA pathogenic variant and advanced breast cancer may have enhanced sensitivity to platinum-based chemotherapy and PARP inhibitors. However, the sensitivity and resistance to these treatments may partially overlap. The impact of prior exposure to PARP inhibitors/platinum-based chemotherapy on tumor response to subsequent treatment remains unclear.

The impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on global influenza surveillance: Insights from 18 National Influenza Centers based on a survey conducted between November 2021 and March 2022

Summary: The FluCov project, covering 22 countries, was initiated to monitor the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on influenza activity. The survey results show the profound impact of SARS-CoV-2 on national influenza surveillance in the first 27 months of the pandemic. Most NICs were able to increase their laboratory testing capacity and the robustness of their surveillance systems, and anticipate the integration of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance into the existing respiratory surveillance system.

Summary: Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. MicroRNAs, a group of small non-coding RNA molecules, may act as tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes and play a role in cancer risk. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to identify circulating microRNAs associated with breast cancer diagnosis, with emphasis on methodological issues. The analysis included 75 studies, and meta-analysis was performed for microRNAs analyzed in at least three independent studies. The study found that MIR21, MIR155, and MIR10b were differentially expressed in breast cancer patients compared to healthy controls, but there was little consistency among the included studies.

Barrier Films and Dressings for the Prevention of Acute Radiation Dermatitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Jolien Robijns, Michele Aquilano, Suvam Banerjee, Saverio Caini, Julie Ryan Wolf, Corina van den Hurk, Mara Beveridge, Henry Lam, Pierluigi Bonomo, Edward Chow, Tara Behroozian

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy of barrier films and dressings in preventing acute radiation dermatitis (RD). The results showed that Hydrofilm and Mepitel Film could effectively reduce the severity of RD and improve patient-reported outcomes. However, the overall evidence for studies on barrier films and dressings is weak due to limited study number, high risk of bias, small sample sizes, and minimal comparable outcome measures.

Natural and miscellaneous agents for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of natural and miscellaneous agents in preventing acute radiation dermatitis in cancer patients. The results showed that oral enzymes and olive oil significantly reduced the incidence of radiation dermatitis, while the other agents had no significant effect. However, the evidence supporting natural agents is inconsistent due to low study numbers, low-quality designs, and small sample sizes, therefore, concrete conclusions cannot be made.

Summary: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and prostate cancer prognosis. The analysis included 19 independent studies and found that high alcohol consumption may be associated with an increased risk of fatal prostate cancer in healthy individuals. However, further confirmation is needed due to inconsistencies in the results.

Summary: This study compared different dosing schedules of exemestane, an aromatase inhibitor, in patients with breast cancer. The results showed that a 25mg dose taken three times weekly was as effective as a daily dose in decreasing serum estradiol levels, suggesting that this alternative schedule warrants further investigation.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant effects on the lives of children and adolescents, particularly in terms of psychiatric disorders. A study was conducted comparing the trends in psychiatric disorders in the emergency room before (2018-2019) and during the pandemic (2020-2021). The results showed a decrease in admissions for non-psychiatric disorders and a significant increase in admissions for psychiatric emergencies, with greater impact on female patients, increased severity of disorders, and changes in diagnoses associated with symptoms presentation.

Summary: This study investigated the association between volumetric mammographic breast density measures, their changes over time, and breast cancer risk. It was found that higher values of volumetric percent density and dense volume were positively associated with increased breast cancer risk, while an inverse association was evident for increasing non-dense volume. No clear effect of annual changes in mammographic breast density emerged.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), while adherence to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommendations significantly reduces the risk of developing CRC. In a randomized trial, CRC patients showed gender and microbiota-specific responses to Vitamin D supplementation. Following WCRF recommendations was associated with lower levels of leptin and IL-6, as well as a lower risk of events. Vitamin D supplementation did not have a significant impact on circulating biomarkers or follow-up events.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the clinical and laboratory features of SARS-CoV-2 and Strongyloides coinfection, assessed possible interventions and outcomes, and identified research gaps. The results indicate the need for further research on the frequency and risk of Strongyloides reactivation in COVID-19 patients, and suggest that screening and treatment for Strongyloides infection should be conducted in patients receiving immunosuppressive COVID-19 therapies.
