Summary: The current subjective histopathological assessment of cutaneous melanoma is challenging, and the application of image analysis algorithms to histological images may improve workflow and prognostication. This review aimed to evaluate the accuracy of existing image analysis algorithms applied to digital histological images of cutaneous melanoma.

Summary: Colorectal cancer risk was not associated with telomere length in circulating leukocytes, but shorter leukocyte telomeres were associated with poorer survival in patients with colorectal cancer. Telomere length may serve as a potential biomarker for colorectal cancer prognosis. Larger prospective cohort studies are needed to confirm this potential association.

Summary: In patients with rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, those treated with biologics have an increased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) compared to those not receiving biologics, but this increased risk was not seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The underlying reasons for the increased risk of NMSC in IBD patients require further discussion.

Summary: The source of tissue has a significant impact on the correlation between telomere length and health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the influence of study design and methodological features on the correlation between telomere lengths measured in different tissues from the same individual. It was found that the correlation is influenced by sample size, telomere length measurement methodology, and tissue source.

Summary: This study found that the use of exogenous hormones is associated with an increased risk of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), specifically squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), among women. Oral contraceptives (OC) were found to increase the risk of SCC, while no significant association was observed between hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) and SCC risk. Both OC and HRT use were linked to an increased risk of BCC.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between air pollution exposure during pre-and post-birth and adulthood with telomere length. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using data from 18 studies. The results showed moderate evidence that prenatal PM2.5 and NO2 exposures were related to shortened telomere length. However, other exposures such as prenatal SO2 and CO, childhood PM2.5, PM10, and NO2, as well as short-term adulthood PM2.5 and PM10 exposures were not associated with telomere length. High-quality studies are needed for further investigation.

Summary: Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) can be monitored using noninvasive skin imaging in nonsurgical treatments. The accuracy of dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in detecting clearance is uncertain. Summary: The study systematically evaluated the relationship between telomere length (TL) and osteoarthritis (OA) by analyzing six original studies, showing that OA patients have shorter TL in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) compared to healthy controls. Sex ratio and body mass index (BMI) were identified as possible sources of heterogeneity.

Summary: The role of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) after open partial laryngeal surgery (OPLS) in terms of oncology and function remains controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, and the outcomes of OPLS patients with and without PORT for laryngeal cancer were summarized. The meta-analysis of 10 studies showed no significant difference in overall survival between OPLS patients who did and did not receive PORT, except for a higher incidence of complications in the PORT cohort in one study.

Summary: The FluCov project, covering 22 countries, was initiated to monitor the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on influenza activity. The survey results show the profound impact of SARS-CoV-2 on national influenza surveillance in the first 27 months of the pandemic. Most NICs were able to increase their laboratory testing capacity and the robustness of their surveillance systems, and anticipate the integration of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance into the existing respiratory surveillance system.

Summary: Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. MicroRNAs, a group of small non-coding RNA molecules, may act as tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes and play a role in cancer risk. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to identify circulating microRNAs associated with breast cancer diagnosis, with emphasis on methodological issues. The analysis included 75 studies, and meta-analysis was performed for microRNAs analyzed in at least three independent studies. The study found that MIR21, MIR155, and MIR10b were differentially expressed in breast cancer patients compared to healthy controls, but there was little consistency among the included studies.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy of barrier films and dressings in preventing acute radiation dermatitis (RD). The results showed that Hydrofilm and Mepitel Film could effectively reduce the severity of RD and improve patient-reported outcomes. However, the overall evidence for studies on barrier films and dressings is weak due to limited study number, high risk of bias, small sample sizes, and minimal comparable outcome measures.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of natural and miscellaneous agents in preventing acute radiation dermatitis in cancer patients. The results showed that oral enzymes and olive oil significantly reduced the incidence of radiation dermatitis, while the other agents had no significant effect. However, the evidence supporting natural agents is inconsistent due to low study numbers, low-quality designs, and small sample sizes, therefore, concrete conclusions cannot be made.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant effects on the lives of children and adolescents, particularly in terms of psychiatric disorders. A study was conducted comparing the trends in psychiatric disorders in the emergency room before (2018-2019) and during the pandemic (2020-2021). The results showed a decrease in admissions for non-psychiatric disorders and a significant increase in admissions for psychiatric emergencies, with greater impact on female patients, increased severity of disorders, and changes in diagnoses associated with symptoms presentation.

Summary: This study investigated the association between volumetric mammographic breast density measures, their changes over time, and breast cancer risk. It was found that higher values of volumetric percent density and dense volume were positively associated with increased breast cancer risk, while an inverse association was evident for increasing non-dense volume. No clear effect of annual changes in mammographic breast density emerged.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), while adherence to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommendations significantly reduces the risk of developing CRC. In a randomized trial, CRC patients showed gender and microbiota-specific responses to Vitamin D supplementation. Following WCRF recommendations was associated with lower levels of leptin and IL-6, as well as a lower risk of events. Vitamin D supplementation did not have a significant impact on circulating biomarkers or follow-up events.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the clinical and laboratory features of SARS-CoV-2 and Strongyloides coinfection, assessed possible interventions and outcomes, and identified research gaps. The results indicate the need for further research on the frequency and risk of Strongyloides reactivation in COVID-19 patients, and suggest that screening and treatment for Strongyloides infection should be conducted in patients receiving immunosuppressive COVID-19 therapies.
