Summary: Artifacts in the ECG affect the analysis of heart rate variability. Current preprocessing methods primarily focus on ectopic beats and neglect technical issues. This study introduces a two-step preprocessing approach to eliminate technical and physiological artifacts separately. The results show that the performance of this preprocessing tool is good and most HRV measures are sensitive to both types of noise.

Summary: Enrollment of adolescent and young adult (AYA) in cancer clinical trials (CCT) is not optimal, with various barriers and facilitators identified. Improving coordination between pediatric and medical oncology, providing supportive research infrastructure, and having advocates may help increase AYA enrollment in clinical trials.

Summary: This study reports on the cardiorespiratory function in adolescents and young adults with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). The results indicate significant impairment of cardiorespiratory function in this group, with most individuals having a sedentary lifestyle. Future research is needed to further investigate the cardiorespiratory system and its adaptation to physical stress in individuals with KS.

Summary: A cohort study in Taiwan found that pediatric and young adult patients on dialysis had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality compared to adult patients. Non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease was more prevalent in younger patients within the first 6 months of dialysis initiation, while atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk was higher in adults after 6 months.

Summary: The European Academy of Paediatrics and the European Confederation of Primary Care Paediatricians emphasize the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles within the pediatric population. However, there is limited academic literature providing recommendations for participation in sport activities for the general pediatric population. The aim of the first part of their position statement is to assist healthcare professionals in implementing the best management strategies for a pre-participation evaluation for participation in sports for individual children and adolescents.

Summary: The study evaluated the need for catch-up measles, rubella, mumps, and varicella immunization by young adults at a travel clinic, finding that a significant proportion of individuals who needed catch-up immunization received at least one dose of immunization after consultation, but factors such as tourism, yellow fever vaccination, and disease history were negatively associated with catch-up immunization. Further studies are needed to identify barriers to catch-up immunization.

Summary: The study found that patients on Efavirenz had a higher prevalence of dysrhythmias, including frequent PVC, low HRV, and prolonged QTc, compared to controls. This highlights the importance of monitoring dysrhythmias in HIV patients on Efavirenz, especially young individuals.

Summary: This study identified the trajectories of organized youth sports over a 9-year period in youths aged 9-18 years and examined whether these trajectories predicted physical activity, sedentary behavior, and obesity in midlife. The results showed that sustained participation in organized youth sports is independently predictive of physical activity patterns, sedentary time, and obesity in midlife, especially among girls.

Summary: Most sexually active youth in the United States do not perceive themselves as at risk for contracting HIV and have never undergone testing. Safe environments, accurate sexual and reproductive health assessments, and nonstigmatizing risk counseling are crucial elements in youth encounters. Pediatricians can prevent and control HIV infection by promoting risk-reduction counseling, routine HIV testing, and prophylaxis for adolescent and young adult patients.

Summary: This qualitative study identified 7 distinct end-of-life priority domains for adolescents and young adults with cancer, including attention to physical symptoms, quality of life, psychosocial and spiritual care, communication and decision-making, relationships with clinicians, care and treatment, and independence. Some domains were unique or had distinct manifestations for this young population, suggesting the need for new indicators to better reflect patient-centered experiences.

Summary: In this study, a scale on self-perceived participatory-moral literacy was used to investigate the online behavior of 1,489 adolescents and young adults aged 16-22 from eight different European countries. The results revealed a consistent model of participatory-moral abilities, motivation, and behavior across the countries. This study has important implications for digital literacy research.

Summary: Low bone mineral density was modestly associated with increased progression of aortic valve calcification and mitral annular calcification in a multi-ethnic cohort study. The impact of altered bone mineral metabolism on calcific valve disease in the general population was not significant, but may have a more meaningful influence in higher-risk individuals with osteoporosis, requiring further investigation.

Summary: Despite the popularity of running as a sport for children worldwide, there is limited research on its impact on injury and illness, especially for preadolescent and pubescent athletes. Current guidelines on risk factors and suitable running distances for youth runners are opinion based. The International Committee Consensus Work Group aims to evaluate the current science, identify knowledge gaps, categorize risk factors, and provide recommendations for training, nutrition, and participation for youth runners.
