Summary: Various adverse ocular reactions have been reported after COVID-19 vaccination, and this article adds to the literature by presenting a case of a 61-year-old woman who developed NAION after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine. The article also provides an in-depth explanation of the possible mechanisms behind the hypercoagulable state after vaccination. Ophthalmologists recommend increased awareness of possible ocular complications when evaluating patients with sudden visual disturbance and recent vaccination history.

Summary: This study compared 94 patients with AAION and 94 patients with NAAION to identify characteristics that can distinguish between the two. They found that age, blood pressure, symptoms, and other factors were associated with a diagnosis of AAION. A scoring system based on these characteristics accurately distinguished AAION from NAAION with a high sensitivity and specificity.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the role of papillary vitreous detachment in the pathogenesis of NAION by comparing the features of vitreopapillary interface between NAION patients and normal individuals. The results showed that the incomplete papillary vitreous detachment was observed in all acute NAION patients. Furthermore, the presence of peripapillary wrinkles and superficial vessel protrusion were more common in NAION patients.

Summary: This study investigated how often GCA mimics NAION at presentation and found that 7.1% of TAB-positive GCA patients presented with clinical manifestations similar to NAION, highlighting the importance of differentiating these two conditions through the use of inflammatory markers and temporal artery biopsy.

Summary: Ischaemic optic neuropathy (ION) is a major cause of blindness, with posterior and anterior varieties. The arteritic variety of anterior ION (AAION) is usually due to giant cell arteritis, which may only present with visual loss in up to 25% of cases. Early recognition and differentiation from AAION is crucial to prevent further visual loss.

Summary: This meta-analysis included 49 original studies with over 10 million patients, and found that risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, sleep apnea, factor V Leiden heterozygous, and medication history of cardiovascular drugs were significantly associated with NAION. Better understanding of these risk factors can help in developing more effective therapeutic approaches for NAION.

Summary: The study found significant microvascular impairments in eyes affected by NAION and unaffected fellow eyes compared to healthy controls, with different characteristic patterns observed in macular OCTA parameters between acute and non-acute NAION.

Summary: The study found that in patients with NAION, the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and macular outer nuclear layer were thicker within 2 months of onset compared to controls. However, within 2-5 months, there was thinning in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, macular retinal nerve fiber layer, and ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer, which was associated with final visual field outcomes.

Summary: The study identified significantly abnormal functional reorganization between the primary visual cortex and several other brain regions in patients with NAION, indicating that NAION may not only be an ophthalmic disease but also a neuro-ophthalmological disease.

Summary: This study developed a deep learning system to differentiate demyelinating optic neuritis (ON) and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) with overlapping clinical profiles at the acute phase. The system achieved satisfactory performance in distinguishing ON from NAION, with high AUC, sensitivity, and specificity. The system's performance was comparable to that of a retinal expert and better than other ophthalmologists.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that macular choroidal thickness (MCT) and peripapillary choroidal thickness (PCT) were higher in patients with NAION compared to healthy controls, indicating that increased MCT and PCT may be important anatomical and physiological features of NAION.

Summary: This case report highlights a possible association between COVID-19 vaccination and the development of NAAION, although it remains unclear whether the vaccine was the triggering factor or a coincidental finding.

Summary: This case report of a 50-year-old male patient with resolved NAION demonstrated a correlation between structural and vascular features using SD-OCT and OCT Angiography. The findings suggest that OCTA is a new, valid, and non-invasive imaging technique for the diagnosis and follow-up of NAION, even after resolution of the acute phase without clinical signs on fundus examination.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hypercholesterolemia/dyslipidemia. These findings suggest that vascular dysfunction may play a role in the pathogenesis of NAION.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of OCTA to distinguish healthy eyes from eyes with NA-AION by measuring peripapillary perfusion. Results showed that decreased peripapillary vessel density (pVD) and differences in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness were observed in NA-AION eyes, with better diagnostic accuracy in the superior temporal (ST) region. The findings suggest that pVD measured by OCTA may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker for NA-AION.
