The use of caffeine containing energy drinks has dramatically increased in the last few years, especially in the sport context because of its reported ergogenic effect. The ingestion of low to moderate doses of caffeinated energy drinks has been associated with adverse side effects such as insomnia or increased nervousness. The aim of the present study was to assess psycho-physiological changes and the prevalence of side effects resulting from the ingestion of 3mg caffeine/kg body mass in the form of an energy drink. In a double-blind and placebo controlled experimental design, ninety experienced and low-caffeine-consuming athletes (fifty-three male and thirty-seven female) in two different sessions were provided with an energy drink that contained 3 mg/kg of caffeine or the same decaffeinated energy drink (placebo; 0 mg/kg). At 60 min after the ingestion of the energy drink, participants completed a training session. The effects of ingestion of these beverages on psycho-physiological variables during exercise and the rate of adverse side effects were measured using questionnaires. The caffeinated energy drink increased self-perceived muscle power during exercise compared with the placebo beverage (6.41 (SD 1.7) v. 5.66 (SD 1.51); P = 0.001). Moreover, the energy drink produced a higher prevalence of side effects such as insomnia (31.2 v. 10.4 %; P<0.001), nervousness (13.2 v. 0%; P=0.002) and activeness (16.9 v. 3.9%; P=0.007) than the placebo energy drink. There were no sex differences in the incidence of side effects (P>0.05). The ingestion of an energy drink with 3 mg/kg of caffeine increased the prevalence of side effects. The presence of these side effects was similar between male and female participants.

Muscle hypertrophy induced by N-3 PUFA supplementation in absence of exercise: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Jaime Lopez-Seoane, Sergio L. Jimenez, Juan Del Coso, Helios Pareja-Galeano

Summary: This systematic review examines the effects of n-3 PUFA supplementation on lean mass and muscle protein synthesis in individuals without physical training. The review found that n-3 PUFA supplementation had positive effects on skeletal muscle volume and mass, as well as muscle protein synthesis rate. However, there was no significant effect on the mechanisms of mTOR, Akt, and skeletal muscle gene expression.

Agreement between isokinetic eccentric hamstring strength, Nordic hamstring strength and Nordic break-point angle in a sample of trained and healthy individuals

A. Miralles-Iborra, J. L. L. Elvira, T. Urban, A. Calado, J. Del Coso, V Moreno-Perez

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between different measures of eccentric hamstring strength and the gold standard measurement of eccentric hamstring strength using an isokinetic dynamometer. The results showed that all Nordic-based measurements had acceptable associations with the gold standard measurement, but the peak eccentric force measured on the Smart-Nordic device had a better agreement with the isokinetic eccentric hamstring peak torque compared to the video-based measurements.

The Five-substitution Option Enhances Teams' Running Performance at High Speed in Football

Alejandro Lopez-Valenciano, Victor Moreno-Perez, Roberto Lopez-Del Campo, Ricardo Resta, Juan Del Coso

Summary: The introduction of the five-substitution option in professional football teams increased the number of substitutions per match but did not change the timing of the first substitution. However, it led to higher running distances at higher speeds (21.0-23.9 km/h and >= 24.0 km/h) and was associated with increased running performance by starting players rather than substitutes. This option allowed team coaches to better manage players' physical load and enhance their running performance.

Summary: The influence of the rs8111989 polymorphism in the muscle-specific creatine kinase gene ( CKM ) on injury incidence is unknown. This study found that the CKM polymorphism did not affect injury incidence in high-performance football players. However, players with the GA genotype were more prone to severe injuries and muscle tears.

Effects of Caffeine Intake on Endurance Running Performance and Time to Exhaustion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Ziyu Wang, Bopeng Qiu, Jie Gao, Juan Del Coso

Summary: Caffeine is widely consumed in sports for its established performance-enhancing effects. While there is ample evidence for the benefits of caffeine supplementation on endurance exercise, most of the studies have focused on cycling trials. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the effects of caffeine intake on endurance running performance.

Summary: alpha-Actinin-3 is a protein found in skeletal muscle that plays a structural role at the Z-line. The presence of a certain gene variant affects the expression of alpha-actinin-3, and individuals with functional alpha-actinin-3 have a higher frequency in elite badminton players, especially those ranked in the world's top ten.

Summary: The research aimed to study the age evolution of badminton players in men's, women's, and mixed doubles from 1994 to 2020. Data obtained from the Badminton World Federation website showed that the average age of men's and mixed doubles players increased over time, while the average age of women's doubles remained constant. Women's doubles players also reached their peak performance at a younger age than men's and mixed doubles players. These findings could provide valuable insights for coaches, trainers, and selectors in planning the athletic career of elite players.

Differences in playing style and technical performance according to the team ranking in the Spanish football LaLiga. A thirteen seasons study

Joaquin Gonzalez-Rodenas, Jordi Ferrandis, Victor Moreno-Perez, Roberto Lopez-Del Campo, Ricardo Resta, Juan Del Coso

Summary: This study examines the differences in playing style and technical performance based on ranking levels in Spanish football teams. Higher-ranked teams exhibit an advanced starting position, longer offensive sequences, slower progression speed, more ball possession, higher passing accuracy, and more crosses and through balls. Coaches should consider adopting a playing style focused on regaining ball possession in advanced field zones and using long passing sequences as an effective tactical strategy to improve ranking.
