The prevalence of obesity has increased simultaneously with the increase in the consumption of large food portion sizes (FPS). Studies investigating this association among adolescents are limited; fewer have addressed energy-dense foods as a potential risk factor. In the present study, the association between the portion size of the most energy-dense foods and BMI was investigated. A representative sample of 636 British adolescents (11-18 years) was used from the 2008-2011 UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey. FPS were estimated for the most energy-dense foods (those containing above 10.5 kJ/g (2.5 kcal/g)). Regression models with BMI as the outcome variable were adjusted for age, sex and misreporting energy intake (EI). A positive association was observed between total EI and BMI. For each 418 kJ (100 kcal) increase in EI, BMI increased by 0.19 kg/m(2) (95% CI 0.10, 0.28; P<0.001) for the whole sample. This association remained significant after stratifying the sample by misreporting. The portion sizes of a limited number of high-energy-dense foods (high-fibre breakfast cereals, cream and high-energy soft drinks (carbonated)) were found to be positively associated with a higher BMI among all adolescents after adjusting for misreporting. When eliminating the effect of under-reporting, larger portion sizes of a number of high-energy-dense foods (biscuits, cheese, cream and cakes) were found to be positively associated with BMI among normal reporters. The portion sizes of only high-fibre breakfast cereals and high-energy soft drinks (carbonated) were found to be positively associated with BMI among under-reporters. These findings emphasise the importance of considering under-reporting when analysing adolescents' dietary intake data. Also, there is a need to address adolescents' awareness of portion sizes of energy-dense foods to improve their food choice and future health outcomes.

Summary: Nutrition messages play a crucial role in policy making, product information, advertising, healthcare advice, and lifestyle campaigns. However, the challenges of delivering effective nutrition messages have become more pronounced due to the abundance of information, inconsistent food landscapes, and limited public engagement. This review explores these challenges and identifies potential opportunities for future research in the field.

Observational assessments of the relationship of dietary and pharmacological treatment on continuous measures of dysglycemia over 24 hours in women with gestational diabetes

Cassy F. Dingena, Melvin J. Holmes, Matthew D. Campbell, Janet E. Cade, Eleanor M. Scott, Michael A. Zulyniak

Summary: This study aimed to characterize continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics over 24 hours in women with gestational diabetes (GDM) and the moderating effect of treatment strategy. The results showed significant variability in glucose levels throughout the day, with the highest variability in the morning. Additionally, individuals assigned to diet+metformin had greater difficulty managing glycemia, and increased dietary protein intake may assist with the management of dysglycemia.

Summary: This study presents the first national-level report on the state of women's preconception health in England. It found that certain preconception health issues, such as smoking, lack of folic acid supplementation, and previous pregnancy loss, have a high prevalence among women in England. Inequalities in these health issues were observed based on age, ethnicity, and area-based deprivation level. The study suggests the need for improved strategies to address women's preconception health and reduce socio-demographic inequalities.

Summary: Optimum nutrition is crucial for good health. The Nutrition Society of the UK and Ireland and the Sabri ulker Foundation organized a hybrid conference in Istanbul to emphasize the importance of nutrition. The conference aimed to inspire healthcare professionals and policymakers to consider nutrition in their interactions with patients and the public, in order to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The event provided an opportunity to share and learn from different approaches and initiatives in the UK, Turkey, and Finland, with a focus on research and translation into nutrition policies.

Summary: This study developed a school food systems map using a systems thinking approach to identify key factors influencing primary school children's dietary choices. The map highlighted leadership and curriculum, child food preferences, home environment, and school food environment as four key themes. It also emphasized the need to consider factors outside of schools to effectively improve children's diets.

Summary: This study investigated the association between kidney size at birth and markers of kidney function at 7-11 years. The findings suggest that foetal kidney volume is associated with small increases in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in mid-childhood. Longitudinal follow-up is needed to further explore the relationship between kidney volume and markers of kidney function.

Summary: The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is a commonly used method in nutritional epidemiology to assess an individual's habitual dietary intake. This study evaluated the validity and reproducibility of the FFQ used in the DCH-NG cohort. Results showed that the FFQ provided satisfactory rankings of energy, nutrient, and food group intakes, making it suitable for epidemiological studies investigating diet and disease outcomes.
