The objective of the present study was to examine the associations between the portion sizes of food groups consumed with measures of adiposity using data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of British adults. Seven-day weighed dietary records, physical activity diaries and anthropometric measurements were used. Foods eaten were assigned to thirty different food groups and analyses were undertaken separately for men and women. The median daily portion size of each food group consumed was calculated. The potential misreporting of dietary energy intake (EI) was identified using the following equation: EI - estimated energy requirements x 100 = percentage of under-reporting (UR) of energy needs. Multinomial logistic regression (adjusted for age, social class, physical activity level and UR) was used to determine the portion sizes of food groups most strongly associated with obesity status. Few positive associations between the portion sizes of food groups consumed and obesity status were found. However, UR was prevalent, with a median UR of predicted energy needs of 34 and 33% in men and women, respectively. After the adjustment was made for UR, more associations between the food groups and obesity status became apparent in both sexes. The present study suggests that the true effect of increased portion size of foods on obesity status may be masked by high levels of UR. Alternatively, these data may indicate that an increased risk of obesity is not associated with specific foods/food groups but rather with an overall increase in the range of foods and food groups being consumed.

Effects of 22 traditional anti-diabetic medicinal plants on DPP-IV enzyme activity and glucose homeostasis in high-fat fed obese diabetic rats

Summary: The study investigated the effects of hot water extracts of 22 medicinal plants on Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) activity and found that Anogeissus Latifolia exhibited the most significant inhibitory activity. These plant extracts improved glucose tolerance, insulin release, reduced DPP-IV activity, and increased circulating active GLP-1 in obese-diabetic rats, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Summary: Consumer demand for vegetarian options is increasing, leading fast-food restaurants to add more vegetarian offerings. This study analyzed the availability and nutrient profile of vegetarian items in US fast-food restaurants from 2012 to 2018, finding that vegetarian options had lower calories, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, protein, and sodium compared to nonvegetarian items, but higher sugar and nonsugar carbohydrates.

Summary: The study found that high intake of processed meat derived from red meats was associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer in women, suggesting that the carcinogenic effect of processed meat intake may be limited to red meats. This provides preliminary evidence for refining cancer prevention recommendations regarding red and processed meat intake.

Pre-diagnosis lifestyle, health history and psychosocial factors associated with stage at breast cancer diagnosis - Potential targets to shift stage earlier

Qinggang Wang, Michelle L. Aktary, John J. Spinelli, Lorraine Shack, Paula J. Robson, Karen A. Kopciuk

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between various potential risk factors and the stage at diagnosis of breast cancer in women from Alberta, Canada. The results revealed that older age at diagnosis, higher household income, parity, smoking, sun exposure during high ultraviolet times, having a mammogram, and high daily protein intake were protective factors, while comorbidity, current stressful situations, and high daily caloric intake increased the risk of later stage diagnosis. Cancer prevention programs targeting high-risk groups, such as those with comorbidities, non-smokers, and younger women eligible for breast cancer screening, may help to lower the stage at diagnosis of breast cancer.

Summary: This study used data from adults in Alberta, Canada to examine factors associated with lung cancer stage at diagnosis. The study found that a history of sunburn in the past year was protective against late-stage lung cancer diagnosis, while a higher number of prostate specific antigen tests and total recreational physical activity were associated with reduced and increased odds of late-stage lung cancer diagnosis, respectively.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Canada. This study found that differences in sex play a role in the stage at which CRC is diagnosed, with different factors influencing diagnosis stage for males and females. Understanding these differences can help target cancer prevention programs more effectively.
