Summary: Using portion control tools such as smaller bowls, spoons, or calibrated plates can significantly impact food intake by reducing serving sizes and help with weight loss, especially driven by calibrated tableware. However, there was no impact on awareness of appropriate portion sizes, indicating the need for further research in this area.

Summary: Portion sizes of meals have been increasing and this is related to the onset of obesity. Little research has been done on the influence of body weight on portion size preferences. Factors such as gender, age, hunger, and eating behaviors contribute to portion size choices.

Summary: Eating candy is pleasurable, but it is not recommended to eat it in large quantities. Manufacturers have produced small portion sizes of candy, which is healthier. However, the amount of pleasure experienced and the way it is eaten are important factors. In a study, participants were randomly assigned to eat small or large portions of candy in a regular or mindful manner. The results showed that in the mindful eating condition, people experienced more pleasure from eating a small portion, and portion size did not affect guilt. Understanding these effects can help people reduce their candy portion sizes.

Summary: The influence of dishware on portion size perception in children and adolescents is inconclusive. This study found that there were no substantial differences in the intuitive evaluation of portion sizes between children and adolescents with obesity and a normal weight. However, during the cognitive evaluation, those with obesity estimated the amount of water in the glasses more correctly compared to those with a normal weight, while they estimated the food amount in the bowls and plates less accurately.

Summary: Parents determine child portion sizes based on their own eating habits, intuition, and knowledge of their child's appetite. Several factors influence parental decisions including parental childhood mealtime experiences, other family members, and their child's weight status. Strategies to determine appropriate portion sizes include modeling desired behaviors, using unit-based food packaging, and estimation aids, and allowing children to rely on their own appetite cues. A lack of knowledge and awareness of portion size guidance is a key barrier identified by parents, highlighting the need for child-appropriate portion size recommendations in national dietary guidelines.

Summary: Many cities in the US self-report greenhouse gas emissions, but in reality, US cities under-report their own emissions by an average of 18.3% due to omitting particular fuels and source types from their inventories and estimating transportation emissions differently.

Summary: Portion control tableware has the potential to effectively manage weight, although the exact mechanisms are unclear. This study found that a calibrated plate with visual stimuli can regulate food intake, induce satiety, and modify meal eating behavior. The plate reduced portion sizes, especially rice, and decreased bite size and eating rate. However, some participants compensated for the reduced intake over the 8-hour period following the meal.

Summary: Most mothers are aware of the issue of large portion sizes of high energy density (HED) foods, but strategies to reduce portion sizes are not always implemented at home. Inconsistencies were found between observations at home, food diaries, and interview reports for some families. Mothers expressed the need for more support and guidance to decrease the intake of HED foods for their children.

Summary: The study investigates whether children have a conceptual understanding of portion size, finding that many children are able to anticipate their likely food intake prior to meal onset. Age contributes to 9.4% of the variance in portion size accuracy, and further development of computerised portion-size tools is recommended.

Summary: The surfactant properties of PFOS can cause a decrease in its concentration in solutions under high-ionic strength conditions, due to aggregation and enhanced interfacial activity. Divalent cations, such as Mg2+ and Ca2+, have a greater impact on decreasing the critical micelle concentration and increasing the saturation of PFOS at the air-water interface compared to monovalent cations like Na+ and K+. These findings have implications for predicting the fate and transport of PFOS in saltwater-impacted zones near contamination sources.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of hot water extracts of 22 medicinal plants on Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) activity and found that Anogeissus Latifolia exhibited the most significant inhibitory activity. These plant extracts improved glucose tolerance, insulin release, reduced DPP-IV activity, and increased circulating active GLP-1 in obese-diabetic rats, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Summary: Consumer demand for vegetarian options is increasing, leading fast-food restaurants to add more vegetarian offerings. This study analyzed the availability and nutrient profile of vegetarian items in US fast-food restaurants from 2012 to 2018, finding that vegetarian options had lower calories, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, protein, and sodium compared to nonvegetarian items, but higher sugar and nonsugar carbohydrates.

Summary: The study found that high intake of processed meat derived from red meats was associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer in women, suggesting that the carcinogenic effect of processed meat intake may be limited to red meats. This provides preliminary evidence for refining cancer prevention recommendations regarding red and processed meat intake.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between various potential risk factors and the stage at diagnosis of breast cancer in women from Alberta, Canada. The results revealed that older age at diagnosis, higher household income, parity, smoking, sun exposure during high ultraviolet times, having a mammogram, and high daily protein intake were protective factors, while comorbidity, current stressful situations, and high daily caloric intake increased the risk of later stage diagnosis. Cancer prevention programs targeting high-risk groups, such as those with comorbidities, non-smokers, and younger women eligible for breast cancer screening, may help to lower the stage at diagnosis of breast cancer.

Summary: This study used data from adults in Alberta, Canada to examine factors associated with lung cancer stage at diagnosis. The study found that a history of sunburn in the past year was protective against late-stage lung cancer diagnosis, while a higher number of prostate specific antigen tests and total recreational physical activity were associated with reduced and increased odds of late-stage lung cancer diagnosis, respectively.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Canada. This study found that differences in sex play a role in the stage at which CRC is diagnosed, with different factors influencing diagnosis stage for males and females. Understanding these differences can help target cancer prevention programs more effectively.
