Summary: Surgical site infections (SSIs) after craniotomy are a significant concern for patients with glioblastoma, as they lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This study aimed to identify risk factors for SSIs in glioblastoma patients by analyzing patient data from 2012 to 2021. The results suggest that previous surgery, introduced foreign material, subgaleal suction drain, and ventricle opening may slightly increase the risk of SSIs, but none of these factors reached statistical significance. Surprisingly, patients who received radiation therapy had a significantly lower incidence of SSIs.

Summary: Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) in neurosurgery are rare but significantly impact patient outcomes. Immediate cranioplasty performed at the same time as debridement is more effective in reducing treatment failure compared to delayed cranioplasty following SSIs. Furthermore, using prosthetic material such as titanium for cranial vault reconstruction may yield better outcomes compared to using the patient's own bone.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed 48 patients with postcraniotomy bone flap infection who were treated with single-stage debridement, bone flap removal, and immediate titanium mesh cranioplasty. The results showed that 75% of patients achieved resolution of their infection without reoperation, while 25% of patients required reoperation due to either recurrent infection or poor wound healing. Patients with multiple wound healing risk factors had a higher risk of reoperation.

Summary: Catheter-related bloodstream infection, caused by various nosocomial pathogens, is an important healthcare-associated infection, with Candida parapsilosis emerging as a crucial causative agent in the last two decades. Factors such as ICU admission were found to be significantly associated with non-CRBSI, while TPN was significantly positively associated with CRBSI. Patients admitted in ICU were less likely to develop C. parapsilosis CRBSI, while patients receiving TPN were more likely to have C. parapsilosis CRBSI compared to the non-CRBSI group.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the relationship between preoperative predictors and scalp incision type with postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) following glioblastoma resection. The study found that patients with a low preoperative Karnofsky Performance Status, trapdoor scalp incisions during surgery, and preoperative and postoperative steroid treatment were independently associated with an elevated risk of postoperative SSI. These findings may guide future operative decision-making for these patients.

Summary: This study presents a brain-targeted nanoplatform for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatment, which manipulates autophagy and cuproptosis. The nanoplatform utilizes transferrin receptor-mediated active targeting and pH-responsive delivery to achieve site-specific delivery of regorafenib. By inhibiting autophagosome-lysosome fusion, regorafenib induces lethal autophagy arrest in GBM cells. Additionally, Cu2+ is utilized to facilitate the encapsulation of regorafenib and trigger cuproptosis, resulting in a synergistic effect with regorafenib against GBM.

Summary: We report the first identification of a fluconazole-resistant Candida parapsilosis (FR-Cp) strain in our hospital, which subsequently caused an outbreak involving 17 patients (12 deaths) within a 26-bed French intensive care unit. Microsatellite genotyping confirmed that all FR-Cp isolates belonged to the same clone.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the data of hospitalized patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in an Irish tertiary hospital over 10 years. CDI remained a major cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea, with a recurrent rate of 9%. Most infections occurred during hospitalization, and there was a higher likelihood of infection in female patients. Despite key events and increased hospital activity, there was no significant change in the incidence of healthcare-associated CDI, while community-associated CDI reached its highest point in a decade in 2021.

Summary: This study investigated the transmission patterns of a nosocomial carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) outbreak using social network analysis and genomics. The analysis revealed high-resolution transmission patterns involving two related OXA-48 plasmids, multiple species/genotypes, and potential super-spreading. Interventions successfully prevented intra-hospital spread. The findings highlight the importance of integrating social network analysis and genomics in the management of complex nosocomial outbreaks.

Summary: The multi-disciplinary approach in neurosurgical prescribing was beneficial in reducing antimicrobial use. Most antimicrobial prescriptions were deemed appropriate and stewardship actions were implemented. Neurosurgical doctors found the antimicrobial stewardship discussions helpful for education on antibiotic prescribing.
