Summary: This study aimed to identify the risk factors, mortality, and morbidity associated with upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (UEDVT) in trauma patients and the impact of pharmacological prophylaxis. The results showed that UEDVT is associated with higher mortality and the presence of upper extremity fractures, peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) were identified as independent risk factors for UEDVT. Additionally, pharmacological prophylaxis reduced the risk of UEDVT.

Summary: Upper extremity venous thrombosis (UEVT) accounts for about 10% of venous thrombo-embolic disease, mainly due to central venous line usage. Factors associated with venous recanalization after UEVT include thrombosis associated with central venous catheter, UEVT limited to a venous segment, occlusive thrombosis, presence of a PICC Line, deep and distal thrombosis, and superficial thrombosis of the forearm. Occlusive thrombosis is associated with lack of UEVT recanalization.

Summary: Central venous catheter (CVC), peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and malignancy were identified as independent risk factors for upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT), while there was no significant correlation between increased platelet levels and UEDVT.

Summary: By using genome editing to generate knockouts of both f3a and f3b in zebrafish, it was found that a single copy of either f3a or f3b is necessary and sufficient for normal lifespan. Complete loss of TF leads to lethal hemorrhage, and TFa and TFb play predominant roles in venous and arterial circulation, respectively. Loss of TF predisposes to stress-induced cardiac tamponade.

Summary: Therapeutic anticoagulation is used to prevent or treat blood clots, but it can increase the risk of bleeding. Inhibitors of Factor XI (FXI) show promise in reducing the adverse events of anticoagulation. Large-scale phase 3 clinical trials are needed to confirm the role of FXI inhibitors and determine their clinical indications.

Summary: Oral postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) may lead to venous thrombosis (VT), but testing prothrombotic biomarkers before starting HT may be unnecessary. HT induced prothrombotic changes in biomarkers after one year, but this did not increase the risk of VT.

Summary: FXIII is crucial in the modulation of fibrin clot properties in patients with VTE, impacting clot structure and function. FXIII activity is significantly reduced in acute PE and DVT patients, but gradually increases after the acute phase. Reduced FXIII activity is associated with impaired clot permeability and hypofibrinolysis in acute PE patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the presence of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following spinal fractures and identified six independent risk factors associated with DVT, including delayed ultrasound, ASA class, ASIA grade, serum albumin level, HDL-C level, and D-dimer level. The optimal D-dimer cut-off value for diagnosis was found to be 1.08 μg/ml.

Summary: Current clinical imaging of thromboembolic diseases often relies on indirect detection of thrombi, which may delay diagnosis and treatment. The development of targeted molecular imaging tools for direct imaging of thrombi using molecular imaging is highly desired. FXIIa targeting has been shown to be suitable for specific detection of venous and arterial thrombi, allowing for early imaging and monitoring of antithrombotic treatment.

Summary: Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) accounts for approximately 10% of all cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The medical literature has not adequately differentiated between UEDVT in the arm and DVT in the leg. Effort thrombosis should be considered a secondary cause of UEDVT, while primary UEDVT is truly idiopathic. Anticoagulation remains the preferred treatment for UEDVT, but a too-narrow adherence to this protocol may result in missed cases of effort thrombosis.

Summary: This case-control study aimed to identify the effect of persistently increased plasma FXI levels on the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The study found that elevated FXI levels constitute a risk factor for DVT, and this risk nearly doubled in patients with persistently increased FXI levels.

Summary: Recurrent events after a first symptomatic deep venous thrombosis (DVT) are relatively frequent. This study aimed to analyze the incidence, demographics, risk factors, and prognosis of contralateral recurrent DVT (RDVT) and compare it with ipsilateral RDVT. The incidence of contralateral RDVT is relatively low, and it is strongly associated with stent extension, autoimmune disease, anticoagulation noncompliance, and inherited thrombophilia. Survival following contralateral RDVT is similar to survival following ipsilateral RDVT, with malignancy being the leading cause of death.

Summary: There is a lack of comprehensive and uniform data on primary upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (pUEDVT), which has hindered research on these conditions. To address this issue, the ThoRacic OuTlet Syndrome (TROTS) registry was initiated to collect extensive data on all pUEDVT patients and provide guidance for future research.

Summary: This study found that the number of breaks in sedentary time was not associated with lower liver fat content or reduced insulin resistance. However, engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in the afternoon or evening was associated with a reduction of up to 25% in insulin resistance. Further research should investigate whether the timing of physical activity also plays an important role in the occurrence of type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study investigated pain, pain trajectories, and their determinants in hand osteoarthritis (OA) patients. It was found that pain levels were associated with patient and disease characteristics, as well as psychosocial factors. Three pain trajectories were identified in hand OA patients, with different baseline pain levels and stable pain over time.

Summary: This study in the Netherlands examined the first prescribed opioids and the prescribers after knee and hip arthroplasty between 2013 and 2018. It found that the dose of the first prescribed opioid was associated with the total dispensed dose and long-term opioid use in the first year post-surgery. Orthopaedic surgeons primarily prescribed the first prescription, while general practitioners were responsible for consecutive prescriptions.

Summary: This study investigated the association between leptin and heart function and subclinical cardiovascular disease, considering the confounding effect of body fat. The results showed that the association between leptin and heart function and subclinical cardiovascular disease was attenuated after adjusting for body fat. The relationship between genetically-determined leptin concentration and coronary heart disease risk was inconclusive.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the determinants of hand strength in patients with hand osteoarthritis (OA). The results showed that hand strength was negatively associated with female sex, age, and pain. It was found that subluxation of the first carpometacarpal joint (CMC1) was associated with reduced grip strength, while the associations with other radiographic features were confounded by age. The analysis also revealed that the severity of radiographic hand OA did not play an important mediating role in the relationship between age and hand strength.

Summary: This systematic review aims to summarize and compare literature on interventions and their potential effectiveness of GP recruitment and retention in medically underserved areas in Europe. Educational and supportive interventions have been reported most frequently, but there are often overlapping strategies. However, the limited evaluation of these interventions makes it difficult to provide best-practice recommendations for policymakers in European medical deserts.
