Summary: A new covalent organic framework loaded gold nanocluster (AuCOF) with strong catalytic activity was prepared, which can catalyze the reduction of HAuCl4 to form gold nanoparticles (AuNP) with surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) effects. The aptamer of estradiol (E2) can adsorb on the AuCOF surface to suppress its catalytic performance, and desorb from the surface to recover the catalysis upon selective binding to E2.

Summary: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a highly sensitive tool used in environmental testing. However, detecting and quantifying weakly adsorbed molecules (such as heavy metal ions) remains challenging. In this study, a combination of clean SERS substrates capable of capturing heavy metal ions and convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm models is used for quantitative detection. The results demonstrate fast and accurate prediction of As5+ ion concentrations, with a determination coefficient of 0.991 between predicted and actual values.

Summary: Efforts have been made to develop stealth SERS substrates to maintain sensing capabilities in clinical samples by reducing background noise and enhancing sensing capability. Two important methods proposed are the use of zwitterionic molecules and nanoshearing force to achieve antifouling features for point-of-care-testing (POCT). Recent developments in SERS show reliable stealth and sensitivity for diagnosis or personalized treatment in complex clinical samples.

Summary: There is growing evidence that contaminated hospital environments are crucial in transmitting nosocomial pathogens like MRSA. Infection control protocols rely on early laboratory detection of pathogens, but processing of environmental samples is less standardized than clinical samples. A novel pathogen aptasensor swab was developed to detect MRSA on non-absorbable surfaces, with a visual detection limit below 100 CFU/ml and a short 5-minute turnaround time. This selective tool shows promise in quick and cost-effective pathogen detection.

Summary: In this study, Ag/TiO2 coatings with different architectures were prepared using plasma-assisted techniques, and their SERS performance was investigated and compared. Nanoislands enhance the SERS signal, TiO2 degrades surface contaminants, and the photoactivity of titania enables the recycling of substrates. Nanostructured Ag/TiO2 coatings with larger active surface area show a good compromise between high detection limit and recyclability, allowing for the detection of methylene blue at low concentrations and easy cleaning by UV radiation.
