Summary: This study compared the postoperative complications at 90 days and surgical complications at 2 years following total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with and without a history of solid organ transplantation (SOT). The results showed that patients with a history of SOT were more likely to experience medical complications at 90 days postoperatively, but there were no significant differences in 2-year surgical complications or revisions compared to patients without SOT history.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on total hip arthroplasty (THA) with cemented (CHP) and cementless (CLHP) prostheses, in terms of the benefit/cost ratio. The results showed that both CHP and CLHP THA procedures could reduce hospitalization duration during the COVID-19 period, with CHP offering better outcomes in terms of mobilization and shorter hospitalization duration compared to CLHP.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between individual postvaccination immune responses and the subsequent risk of total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to idiopathic osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The results showed that in men, there was no association between tuberculin skin test (TST) results and the risk of THA due to OA, while in women, a strong positive TST was associated with a reduced risk of THA.

Summary: Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) can lead to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), and risk factors such as general anesthesia and prolonged operative time play a significant role in its development. Conversely, tranexamic acid (TXA) administration is thought to effectively reduce the risk of PJI.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of postoperative medical complications and 3-month mortality in patients >= 70 years old with hip fracture following hip arthroplasty during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that patients in this age group had longer fracture to operation duration, and higher incidence of complications and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dementia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and longer fracture to operation duration were identified as independent risk factors.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if hip movement precautions reduce the risk of dislocation after hip arthroplasty using a posterior surgical approach. The meta-analysis of multiple studies found that there was no increased risk of dislocation in the group with minimal or no movement restrictions compared to the group with hip movement precautions. Therefore, allocating resources to implementing hip movement precautions may not be necessary.

Summary: The study investigated the efficacy of aspirin and warfarin for VTE prophylaxis following total knee and hip arthroplasty. The results showed that in low-risk patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, the use of aspirin significantly reduced bleeding events. There was no significant difference in bleeding events between aspirin and warfarin in low-risk patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty.

Summary: This study compared the risk of revision following primary elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients <55 years with those >65 years and identified specific risk factors for revision in the <55 age group. The results showed that patients <55 years had a higher risk of septic revision, aseptic loosening, and instability, but a lower risk of revision for periprosthetic fracture compared to patients >65 years. Various patient and surgical factors were associated with different causes of revision in the <55 age group.

Summary: In 2020, the European Commission classified pure cobalt metal as a Category 1B hazard, but did not include an evaluation of cobalt-containing alloys in medical devices. Summary: The objective of this study was to assess if members of the Argentinian Hip and Knee Association (ACARO) are influenced by risk factors when planning surgery. The results showed that most surgeons routinely evaluated preoperative risk factors and canceled/postponed surgery for abnormalities. Malnutrition was considered important, and diabetes was the most reported comorbidity.

Summary: The study found that preoperative templating for THA using EOS imaging is accurate, with good inter-observer agreement. EOS imaging is more likely to predict accurate acetabular and femoral component size compared to conventional radiographs. Demographic variables such as age, gender, laterality, or BMI do not influence component size and offset.

Summary: The study assessed the quality of life of patients waiting for total hip or knee arthroplasty during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that longer waiting times were associated with a greater decrease in quality of life. Over one-third of THA patients and nearly one-quarter of KA patients were in a state worse than death, with the main reason for deferring surgery being concerns for health of themselves or family.

Summary: This study found that the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after hip and knee arthroplasty is relatively low, and AKI is associated with longer inpatient stays but does not significantly impact 30-day mortality, 30-day readmission, or long-term CKD development. Diabetes, CKD, and male sex were identified as independent predictors of AKI.

Summary: During the COVID-19 lockdown period, there was a significant increase in the number of cycling-related injuries requiring orthopaedic intervention. Female cyclists accounted for a higher proportion of the injured population, and patients were generally older. Fractures were the most common injury type, and the upper extremity was the most frequently affected area.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether the continuous sound pressure levels during elective arthroplasty could be measured using available materials and assess the compliance with occupational noise exposure standards. The findings revealed that it is possible to accurately measure the sound pressure levels, but the noise exposure levels during TKR surgery did not meet the requirements based on the UK guidelines.

Summary: Women from socio-economically deprived areas are less likely to develop and survive breast cancer. In Scotland, the incidence and survival rates of breast cancer are associated with tumor subtypes and mode of detection. Deprivation is associated with higher mortality rates for estrogen receptor positive and HER2-enriched breast cancer.

Summary: The prevalence of osteoarthritis is expected to increase due to an aging population, leading to a rising demand for arthroplasty services in the future. Projections were conducted using historical trend data and population estimates to estimate the future demand for primary knee and hip arthroplasty. The results show an increase in the number of procedures and the associated cost, highlighting the need for additional resources and funding to maintain quality of care and reduce patient waiting times.
