The aim of the present study was to compare heart rate variability (HRV) at rest and during exercise using a temporal series obtained with the Polar S810i monitor and a signal from a LYNX (R) signal conditioner (BIO EMG 1000 model) with a channel configured for the acquisition of ECG signals. Fifteen healthy subjects aged 20.9 +/- 1.4 years were analyzed. The subjects remained at rest for 20 min and performed exercise for another 20 min with the workload selected to achieve 60% of submaximal heart rate. RR series were obtained for each individual with a Polar S810i instrument and with an ECG analyzed with a biological signal conditioner. The HRV indices (rMSSD, pNN50, LFnu, HFnu, and LF/HF) were calculated after signal processing and analysis. The unpaired Student t-test and intraclass correlation coefficient were used for data analysis. No statistically significant differences were observed when comparing the values analyzed by means of the two devices for HRV at rest and during exercise. The intraclass correlation coefficient demonstrated satisfactory correlation between the values obtained by the devices at rest (pNN50 = 0.994; rMSSD = 0.995; LFnu = 0.978; HFnu = 0.978; LF/HF = 0.982) and during exercise (pNN50 = 0.869; rMSSD = 0.929; LFnu = 0.973; HFnu = 0.973; LF/HF = 0.942). The calculation of HRV values by means of temporal series obtained from the Polar S810i instrument appears to be as reliable as those obtained by processing the ECG signal captured with a signal conditioner.

Overweight and obesity in young adults with patellofemoral pain: Impact on functional capacity and strength

Amanda Schenatto Ferreira, Benjamin F. Mentiplay, Bianca Taborda, Marcella Ferraz Pazzinatto, Fabio Micolis de Azevedo, Danilo de Oliveira Silva

Summary: This study investigates the proportion of overweight/obesity in young adults with PFP and explores the association of BMI, body fat, and lean mass with functional capacity and hip and knee strength in this population. The results show that more than one-third of PFP patients are overweight/obese, and higher BMI, body fat, and lower lean mass are associated with poorer functional capacity and strength. Thus, considering these factors is important in assessing and managing PFP in young people.

Exploring overweight and obesity beyond body mass index: A body composition analysis in people with and without patellofemoral pain

Amanda Schenatto Ferreira, Benjamin F. Mentiplay, Bianca Taborda, Marcella Ferraz Pazzinatto, Fabio Micolis de Azevedo, Danilo De Oliveira Silva

Summary: This study compared body mass index (BMI), body fat, and skeletal muscle mass in individuals with patellofemoral pain (PFP) and pain-free individuals. The results showed that women with PFP had higher BMI, body fat, and lower skeletal muscle mass compared to pain-free women. However, there were no significant differences in these measures between men with PFP and their pain-free counterparts. Therefore, BMI and body composition should be taken into consideration when evaluating and managing individuals with PFP, especially in women.

What Parameters Influence the Effect of Cold-Water Immersion on Muscle Soreness? An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the efficacy of cold-water immersion (CWI) on muscle soreness management. The results showed that CWI was superior to control in reducing muscle soreness, regardless of water temperature and protocol. Short and medium immersion times and endurance exercises yielded positive effects, while longer immersions time did not.

Leptin, Adiponectin, and Melatonin Modulate Colostrum Lymphocytes in Mothers with Obesity

Gabrielle do Amaral Virginio Pereira, Tassiane Cristina Morais, Eduardo Luzia Franca, Blanca Elena Guerrero Daboin, Italla Maria Pinheiro Bezerra, Rafael Souza Pessoa, Ocilma Barros de Quental, Adenilda Cristina Honorio-Franca, Luiz Carlos de Abreu

Summary: Pregnancy complicated by obesity leads to negative gestational and neonatal outcomes, as well as a decrease in CD4+ T-lymphocytes. This study investigates how maternal obesity affects colostrum lymphocytes and the intracellular mechanisms of lymphocyte modulation. The results show that maternal obesity reduces T-lymphocytes and TCD4+ in colostrum and inhibits cell proliferation, but these effects can be restored by hormones such as leptin, adiponectin, and melatonin.

Summary: This study found that physical function and fear of movement were not directly associated with the risk of developing PFP in women. However, in the early stages of PFP, young females may have impaired physical function and fear of movement may develop due to persistent PFP.

Cardiac Behavior and Heart Rate Variability in Elderly Hypertensive Individuals during Aerobic Exercise: A Non-Randomized Controlled Study

Paulo Evaristo de Andrade, Juliana Zangirolami-Raimundo, Tassiane Cristina Morais, Luiz Carlos De Abreu, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira, Isabel Cristina Esposito Sorpreso, Jose Maria Soares Junior, Rodrigo Daminello Raimundo

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the autonomic modulation of heart rate in hypertensive elderly individuals during and after a session of aerobic exercise, and to compare it with elderly individuals without cardiovascular or metabolic disease. The results showed that after exercise, elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases had a decrease in parasympathetic modulation and global heart rate variability, but it restored within 30 minutes of post-exercise recovery. We concluded that there was no difference in autonomic modulation and global heart rate variability between elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and hypertensive individuals after a bout of aerobic exercise.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of adding an 8-week online mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) program to exercise therapy and patient education on clinical and psychological factors for people with patellofemoral pain (PFP). The study will recruit 62 participants and randomize them into two treatment groups, with one group receiving the MBI component in addition to exercise therapy and education. The results of this study have the potential to provide new directions for the treatment of PFP.

Ana Flavia Balotari Botta, Marina Cabral Waiteman, Matheus Henrique Maiolini Ducatti, Carmen Lucia Gomes Garcia, Lucca Andre Liporoni Bego Farinelli, David Matthew Bazett-Jones, Ronaldo Valdir Briani, Fabio Micolis de Azevedo

Summary: This study aims to investigate the group-by-time changes in patellofemoral pain (PFP) symptoms, biomechanical, muscle function, pain processing, and psychological features over a minimum of 15 months follow-up, as well as the associations between these changes and self-reported pain, physical performance measures, self-reported function, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and physical activity level. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and linear regression models will be used to analyze the data. This study is important for understanding the predictors of long-term outcome and identifying targets for interventions in PFP.
