This study explored white matter abnormalities in a group of Chinese children with high functioning autism (HFA). Twelve male children with HFA and ten matched typically developing children underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) as well three-dimensional T1-weighted MRI for voxel-based morphometry (VBM). We found a significant decrease of the white matter density in the right frontal lobe, left parietal lobe and right anterior cingulate and a significant increase in the right frontal lobe, left parietal lobe and left cingulate gyrus in the HFA group compared with the control group. The HFA group also had decreased FA in the frontal lobe and left temporal lobe. By combining DT-MRI FA and MRI volumetric analyses based on the VBM model, the results showed consistent white matter abnormalities in a group of Chinese children with HFA. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Responses of cyanobacterial aggregate microbial communities to algal blooms

Congmin Zhu, Junyi Zhang, Xin Wang, Yuqing Yang, Ning Chen, Zuhong Lu, Qinyu Ge, Rui Jiang, Xuegong Zhang, Yunfeng Yang, Ting Chen

Summary: Freshwater lakes are threatened by harmful cyanobacterial blooms, in which Cyanobacterial Aggregates (CA) and associated bacteria play significant roles with variation in taxonomic and functional structure across different blooming stages. Environmental factors and internal metabolism influence the dynamics of microbial structure in CA, with total nitrogen and total phosphorus identified as key drivers of taxonomic and functional variations. Genomic analysis revealed diverse energy pathways in cyanobacteria strains and highlighted co-nitrogen and co-phosphorus pathways with bacteria, suggesting a potential for controlling blooms through disruption of critical microbes.

High-dose rapamycin exerts a temporary impact on T. reesei RUT-C30 through gene trFKBP12

Ai-Ping Pang, Haiyan Wang, Funing Zhang, Xin Hu, Fu-Gen Wu, Zhihua Zhou, Wei Wang, Zuhong Lu, Fengming Lin

Summary: The study demonstrates that only high-concentration rapamycin induced a transient impact on T. reesei RUT-C30 at its early cultivation stage, indicating that T. reesei RUT-C30 is highly resistant to rapamycin possibly due to insensitivity of trTOR and its related signaling pathways to rapamycin. This temporary influence of rapamycin was mediated by gene trFKBP12, adding to our understanding of the roles rapamycin and the TOR signaling pathways play in T. reesei.

Calcium Transport along the Axial Canal in Acropora

Yixin Li, Xin Liao, Chunpeng He, Zuhong Lu

Summary: This study used high resolution micro-computed tomography to investigate morphological changes in Acropora corallites, revealing patterns of calcium carbonate deposition during new branch formation and truncated tip repair. The results showed that the volume ratio of calcareous deposits in the axial canal of truncated branches significantly increased within the first three weeks, then returned to initial levels in the following week. These findings demonstrate the temporary storage and remobilization of calcium carbonate for rapid growth in Acropora.
