Summary: This study aimed to classify patients with psychosis according to the McGorry staging model and compare factors between different stages. Data from 158 hospitalized patients with schizophrenia/psychosis were collected, and they were classified into three clinical stages: relapse, multiple relapses, and persistent and severe illness. Each stage was associated with well-defined clinical presentations, which can help determine appropriate treatment.

Summary: In a cross-sectional study conducted in a large tertiary psychiatric hospital in China, the real-world treatment prescription patterns of antipsychotics for schizophrenia patients were revealed. Second-generation antipsychotics were found to dominate in prescriptions, and the use of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) was associated with antipsychotics treatments along with disease course and self-paying cost. More attention should be paid to concomitant psychiatric medications in clinics.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the risk factors, clinical correlates, and social functions of drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) in Chinese schizophrenia patients. It found that age, high D2 receptor antagonist antipsychotic dose, and valproate dose were risk factors for DIP. DIP was significantly correlated with psychiatric symptoms and social performance. Rational application or discontinuation of valproate is necessary, and early intervention and treatment of DIP can improve schizophrenia patients' prognosis and social performance.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of clozapine once- vs. multiple-daily dosing. The results showed that patients in the multiple-daily dosing group had more severe clinical symptoms, a higher risk of adverse drug reactions, higher doses of clozapine, and more frequent use of other antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, anticholinergics, and laxatives. The quality of the studies was mostly good.

Summary: The study found that nearly one third of emergency physicians in China suffered from depression. Male, older age, higher income, and physical activity were associated with a lower likelihood of depression, while being unmarried, a smoker, having higher education level, longer work hours, poorer health status, worse sleep quality, a history of hypertension and coronary heart disease, as well as experiencing shift work and violence were associated with a higher likelihood of depression.

Summary: This study found no significant differences in cognitive performance between antipsychotic non-responders and responders, suggesting a lack of clinical distinction between the two groups in the sample. Future research may benefit from using machine learning methods with longitudinal data to identify responder subtypes and explore how cognitive factors interact in schizophrenia.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between weight gain in schizophrenia patients with atypical antipsychotic treatment and gut microbiome. The results showed that there were no significant differences in alpha diversity between normal-weight and overweight schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotics. However, the beta diversity analysis revealed distinct clustering patterns for overweight and normal-weight patients. The composition of the gut microbiome also differed between the two groups. Function prediction identified several pathways that were significantly different between groups. Correlation analysis indicated associations between specific bacteria and BMI. Overall, these findings suggest that perturbations in the gut microbiome composition and functional pathways may contribute to weight gain in schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotics.

Summary: This study explored workplace violence directed against assistant and registered nurses working on surgical wards in Sweden. The most frequently reported type of workplace violence was humiliation, followed by physical violence, threats, and unwanted sexual attention. Patients and patients' visitors were reported as the main perpetrators of all types of exposure. Additionally, one-third of the respondents had experienced humiliation from colleagues. Both threats and humiliation showed negative associations with work motivation and health.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 561 Greek patients with myotonic dystrophies. The findings show similarities in clinical and genetic characteristics between these patients and those from other regions. Muscle weakness is the first symptom in both types of myotonic dystrophies, while multisystemic involvement and cataracts are common manifestations. The study highlights the importance of specialized neuromuscular centers that can provide genetic counseling and a multidisciplinary approach.

Summary: This study found an interaction effect between hallucination severity and glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid concentrations in the anterior cingulate cortex, supporting the interhemispheric miscommunication theory in psychosis patients. Significant positive association between glutamate concentration and STG connectivity was observed in high-AVH group, while significant negative association between GABA concentration and STG connectivity was found in low-AVH group.
