Background: Kawasaki Syndrome (KS) is an uncommon childhood disease with unknown etiology. It has been suggested that rotavirus infection may play a causative role in the development of KS. Methods: To examine potential temporal associations between KS and rotavirus infection, seasonal patterns of KS- and rotavirus-associated hospitalizations among children in California and New York during 2000-2005 were compared. Results: Rotavirus hospital admissions were markedly winter seasonal, with very few summer hospitalizations. KS hospitalizations occurred year-round but also peaked slightly during winter and spring. Conclusion: The strong winter seasonal pattern of rotavirus clearly differed from the year-round pattern of KS hospitalizations. While the present study cannot completely rule out rotavirus as having a role in the development of KS, other agents must be involved in the etiology of KS.

Trends in Treatments for Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), United States, February 2020-July 2021

Joseph Y. Abrams, Ermias D. Belay, Shana Godfred-Cato, Angela P. Campbell, Laura D. Zambrano, Amber Kunkel, Allison D. Miller, Michael J. Wu, Lu Meng, Ami B. Shah, Matthew E. Oster

Summary: This study shows that standard treatments for MIS-C patients, including IVIG, steroids, and antiplatelet medication, have become increasingly utilized. Older patients and non-Hispanic Black patients were more likely to receive additional treatments.

Summary: In the MIS-C pandemic in the United States, cardiovascular complications and clinical outcomes, including hospitalization duration, ECMO usage, and death, decreased over time. These data serve as a baseline for monitoring future trends associated with SARS-CoV-2 variants (such as Delta) and increased COVID-19 vaccination among children.

Summary: From December 14, 2020, to April 30, 2021, 20 patients with MIS-A were reported to CDC. The median age was 35 years, with 65% being male. 80% had a preceding COVID-19-like illness before MIS-A onset. All patients had laboratory evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Summary: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in adults (MIS-A) is a rare but severe hyperinflammatory illness associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most MIS-A patients present with severe cardiac symptoms and have a significant ICU admission rate and mortality rate.

Summary: This study compares the clinical characteristics and laboratory data of patients with MIS-C, COVID-19, KD, and TSS, and finds that patients with MIS-C have significantly higher prevalence of cardiac complications, elevated markers of inflammation and cardiac damage, thrombocytopenia, and lymphopenia compared with patients with the other conditions. Diagnostic scores utilizing clinical findings effectively distinguish MIS-C from COVID-19, KD, and TSS.

Summary: This study investigates the PCB contamination in the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne caused by the discharge of contaminated waste from Superfund sites in the 1950s to 1970s. It identifies research gaps and suggests future research priorities by developing an evidence map of PCB research. The study highlights the need for new studies to address uncertainties in current PCB exposure levels and source characterization.

Summary: This study described the characteristics associated with COVID-19 vaccination, vaccine adverse events, and vaccine attitudes in children with a history of MIS-C or COVID-19. The results showed that COVID-19 vaccination was well tolerated in children with prior MIS-C or COVID-19, and parents/guardians regarded their children's doctors as a trusted source of information for COVID-19 vaccines.

Summary: Understanding the serological responses to COVID-19 vaccination in children with history of MIS-C could provide valuable insights for vaccination recommendations. A study was conducted on seven hospitalized children with MIS-C to measure the levels of SARS-CoV-2 binding IgG antibodies before and after Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccination. The findings showed that cross-reactive IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 variants declined after acute MIS-C, but were significantly boosted and maintained for up to 3 months following vaccination.
