Summary: Bipolar fractures involving distal radius and radial head are rare injuries that require consideration of both wrist and elbow. Treatment options vary depending on the specific case, with surgical intervention or conservative treatment being viable options. Preserving radial length during surgery is important for optimizing patient outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of chronic pain and disability in patients with distal radius fractures (DRF) treated conservatively. Off-cast Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores were found to be significant predictors of pain and disability at 24 weeks.

Summary: We evaluated the feasibility of a juxta-articular-type volar distal radius plate for the surgical treatment of marginal distal radius fractures. The study included 20 cases of marginal distal radius fractures treated with the ARIX Wrist System between July 2020 and July 2022. The results showed favorable clinical outcomes and no implant-related complications in East Asian patients.

Summary: This study found that higher PRWE-P scores at 6 months after DRF were significantly associated with more severe pain catastrophizing, emotional distress, and fear of performing wrist movements. Furthermore, higher PRWE-F scores were also highly correlated with worse pain catastrophizing, emotional distress, and fear of performing wrist movements. PRWE-P or PRWE-F scores of >18/50 showed the best combination of sensitivity and specificity in identifying individuals with pain catastrophizing, emotional distress, and fear of performing wrist movements at 6 months after DRF (AUC values of >0.88).

Summary: Gait decline in older adults, especially distal radius fracture in females, is associated with subsequent fracture risk. However, little is known about the daily gait characteristics related to this risk.

Summary: Using a limited radial distraction procedure during fixed-angle plate fixation for distal radius fractures as an alternative to indirect ulnar shortening osteotomy can potentially reduce the occurrence of postoperative ulnar-sided wrist pain and improve functional outcomes.

Summary: This report presents a case of a 42-year-old male construction worker who suffered from a comminuted lunate fracture combined with distal radius fracture and scaphoid fracture, caused by being crushed by an excavator bucket. The patient achieved favorable rehabilitation outcomes and regained his ability to work after surgical treatment and rehabilitation training at the 3rd and 6th month post-surgery respectively.

Summary: A better understanding of the features of subsequent fractures after distal radius fracture (DRF) is important for the prevention of further osteoporotic fractures. This study in South Korea found that the cumulative incidence of subsequent osteoporotic fractures increased over time and that the mortality rates of subsequent DRFs were lower than those of first-time DRFs, with women having higher risk of subsequent fractures.

Summary: This study analyzed the effect of compliance with the ERAS protocol on clinical outcomes following surgery for distal radius fractures (DRF). The results showed that high compliance with the ERAS protocol was associated with better postoperative function levels, shorter discharge time, and lower pain scores, without increasing complications or hospital costs.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical information of patients diagnosed with distal radius fracture (DRF) in a hospital in Hokkaido, Japan. The incidence of DRF showed a significant decreasing trend among female patients, and the most common cause of injury was a simple fall in patients over 15 years old and sports injuries in patients under 15 years old. The high incidence of DRF can be attributed to population aging.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with distal radius fractures (DRFs). The results showed a significant correlation between platelet and red blood cell levels and the occurrence of DRFs. Platelet count and red blood cell count were significantly correlated with DRFs. Platelets and gender were also significantly associated with the maintenance time from recovery to recurrence (MTRR) of DRFs.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the use of intrathecal diamorphine as analgesia for major elective laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the UK. The results showed that a high percentage of consultant anaesthetists used intrathecal opioids routinely, with diamorphine being the most commonly used drug. However, there was a lack of consensus regarding the optimal dosing of intrathecal diamorphine. Further randomized dose-response trials are needed to understand the relationship between the dose of intrathecal diamorphine and patient outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk of complications associated with casting acute distal radius fractures in adult patients. The results showed no major complications in this series of 30 adult patients, suggesting that casting may be a safe and effective treatment for low-energy distal radius fractures in adults.

Summary: Regional anesthesia is more effective than general anesthesia in reducing postoperative pain scores and decreasing opioid consumption in the early postoperative period following distal radius fracture surgery. However, patients in the regional anesthesia group had a higher opioid consumption on the first day post-discharge.

Summary: The study compared unicortical and bicortical fixations in intra-articular distal radius fracture models, with similar biomechanical behaviors observed between the two methods. However, there was a difference in stiffness during dorsal flexion only in unicortical fixation. The maximum force to break the model in axial compression was greater in bicortical than in unicortical construct, suggesting the use of unicortical distal locking screws to prevent extensor tendon ruptures in distal radius fracture fixation with volar plates.
