Summary: The study found that Africa's lower COVID-19 mortality rate is due to its younger population age structure, lower life expectancy, lower pre-COVID-19 era mortality rate for those over 65, and fewer people living with cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: This study examines the impact of socio-economic and health conditions on COVID-19 mortality in the United States. The results show that COVID-19 mortality is associated with certain socio-economic and health variables, with education playing a crucial role in improving people's standard of living.

Summary: This article aims to provide updates on stroke incidence, case-fatality, and mortality rates, as well as identify national stroke clinical registries worldwide. The study reveals disparities and burden in low- and middle-income countries, and limited information from newly identified registries.

Summary: This study analyzed the global mortality and case fatality rate of COVID-19 and predicted that the pandemic could end in 2022. However, by 2023, COVID-19 could be one or two times more deadly than seasonal influenza. The prediction took into account the possibility of new variants of the virus and was supported by the Omicron variant and other facts.

Summary: This study summarizes the case fatality rate (CFR) of COVID-19 and factors contributing to mortality in Ethiopia. The study found that the CFR of COVID-19 in Ethiopia is comparable to other countries, and comorbid conditions, older age group, male sex, disease severity, and history of surgery/trauma are factors increasing the likelihood of death. Urgent interdisciplinary interventions should be implemented to reduce the mortality risk in vulnerable groups, and further prospective studies are needed to better understand the CFR of COVID-19 in Ethiopia.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant beneficial effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on cognitive and physical impairment in frail older adults with diabetes and HFpEF. The results show improvements in cognitive function as well as physical impairment in the empagliflozin group compared to the metformin and insulin groups.

Summary: In a study conducted in Cali, Colombia, it was found that the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality was higher in areas with lower socioeconomic status and lower in areas with higher socioeconomic status. This suggests that contextual conditions may influence the risk of CVD mortality. Therefore, efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease should consider local conditions.

Summary: This study reveals the association between weather conditions (temperature and humidity) and COVID-19 mortality. The results show that higher temperatures and humidity after symptom onset are linked to lower fatality rates, while lower humidity before symptom onset is associated with higher fatality rates.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak in Daegu, Korea was controlled by the end of March 2020. A retrospective, multicenter cohort study conducted on 7,057 laboratory-confirmed patients revealed that 77% were asymptomatic to mild. Key risk factors for 28-day mortality included age, need for O-2 supply, fever, and underlying health conditions like diabetes and cancer.

Summary: The study investigated the combined burden of frailty and poor cardiovascular health on mortality risk by sex and age, finding that the impact varies with age in males but remains constant in females. Older males with at least mild frailty and intermediate cardiovascular health or worse had a higher risk of all-cause and CVD-related mortality. Adding frailty assessment to evaluations of cardiovascular health may help identify individuals at higher risk of mortality.

Summary: Empirical evidence suggests that there is a significant bidirectional association between mental disorders and physical diseases, but the prospective impact of mental disorders on clinical outcomes of physical diseases has not been fully examined. This umbrella review analyzed systematic reviews with meta-analysis to identify the association between mental disorders and clinical outcomes of physical diseases. The study found that mental disorders increase the risk of adverse clinical outcomes in various physical diseases, and prevention targeting these disorders can reduce the incidence of negative outcomes. Summary: This study examines the behavior of the case fatality rate (CFR) in a population with vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. The results show that the CFR is influenced by both the effectiveness of vaccines and the detection of breakthrough infections. Therefore, a decline in the CFR does not necessarily indicate the effectiveness of vaccines in reducing deaths, and a constant CFR can still mean that vaccines are effective.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of universal health coverage (UHC) and global health security (GHS) on the rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection and case fatality in Africa. The results show that UHC, median age of the national population, and population density have significant effects on the infection rate, while the infection rate, median age of the national population, and prevalence of obesity among adults are associated with the case fatality rate. UHC and GHS do not seem to protect against the case fatality rate of COVID-19.

Summary: This study found that cardiorespiratory fitness modifies the risk of death related to prediabetes and diabetes. Men with either prediabetes or diabetes combined with low aerobic capacity had increased risk of cardiovascular death, while men with prediabetes and low oxygen uptake also had increased noncardiovascular mortality.
