Background: Hybridogenesis (hemiclonal inheritance) is a kind of clonal reproduction in which hybrids between parental species are reproduced by crossing with one of the parental species. European water frogs (Pelophylax esculentus complex) represent an appropriate model for studying interspecies hybridization, processes of hemiclonal inheritance and polyploidization. P. esculentus complex consists of two parental species, P. ridibundus (the lake frog) and P. lessonae (the pool frog), and their hybridogenetic hybrid - P. esculentus (the edible frog). Parental and hybrid frogs can reproduce syntopically and form hemiclonal population systems. For studying mechanisms underlying the maintenance of water frog population systems it is required to characterize the karyotypes transmitted in gametes of parental and different hybrid animals of both sexes. Results: In order to obtain an instrument for characterization of oocyte karyotypes in hybrid female frogs, we constructed cytological maps of lampbrush chromosomes from oocytes of both parental species originating in Eastern Ukraine. We further identified certain molecular components of chromosomal marker structures and mapped coilin-rich spheres and granules, chromosome associated nucleoli and special loops accumulating splicing factors. We recorded the dissimilarities between P. ridibundus and P. lessonae lampbrush chromosomes in the length of orthologous chromosomes, number and location of marker structures and interstitial (TTAGGG)(n)-repeat sites as well as activity of nucleolus organizer. Satellite repeat RrS1 was mapped in centromere regions of lampbrush chromosomes of the both species. Additionally, we discovered transcripts of RrS1 repeat in oocytes of P. ridibundus and P. lessonae. Moreover, G-rich transcripts of telomere repeat were revealed in association with terminal regions of P. ridibundus and P. lessonae lampbrush chromosomes. Conclusions: The constructed cytological maps of lampbrush chromosomes of P. ridibundus and P. lessonae provide basis to define the type of genome transmitted within individual oocytes of P. esculentus females with different ploidy and from various population systems.

Delete and survive: strategies of programmed genetic material elimination in eukaryotes

Dmitrij Dedukh, Alla Krasikova

Summary: Genome stability is crucial for eukaryotic organisms, but some organisms can selectively eliminate part of their genomes during specific developmental stages. Programmed DNA elimination, occurring independently in different organisms, serves as a mechanism for dosage compensation and inactivation of unnecessary or dangerous genetic entities. Genome elimination in hybrids results from competition between parental genomes.

Clonal gametogenesis is triggered by intrinsic stimuli in the hybrid's germ cells but is dependent on sex differentiation†

Summary: Interspecific hybridization may lead to a transition from sexual reproduction to asexual reproduction, but the reasons for this change are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the triggers of asexual reproduction and found that it is directly influenced by the hybrid genetic constitution of the cell. Additionally, the execution of asexual development is regulated by signals from the surrounding gonadal environment and somatic factors.

Summary: Passerine birds have a unique chromosome called the germline-restricted chromosome (GRC) in their germ cells, which varies greatly in size and composition among species, and may contribute to reproductive isolation and speciation rate in passerine birds.

Premeiotic endoreplication is essential for obligate parthenogenesis in geckos

Dmitrij Dedukh, Marie Altmanova, Jiri Klima, Lukas Kratochvil

Summary: Obligate parthenogenesis has evolved multiple times in reptiles through interspecific hybridization, resulting in the formation of diploid and triploid lineages. This study shows that oocytes in several widespread parthenogenetic complexes of geckos undergo meiosis and produce unreduced eggs through premeiotic endoreplication, allowing for the emergence of fertile polyploid lineages within parthenogenetic complexes.

Summary: The study found that the anomaly P syndrome can be caused by the trematode Strigea robusta, and polydactyly and heavy forms of the syndrome can also be observed in toads of the genera Bufo and Bufotes. Furthermore, it was discovered that the parasite does not have any effect on the gonadal development of the toads.

VENTRAL AND LATERAL SPOT PATTERNS DIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN THREE SMOOTH NEWT SPECIES (AMPHIBIA: SALAMANDRIDAE: LISSOTRITON)

Dmitriyv V. Skorinov, Emin Bozkurt, Kurtulus Olgun, Spartak N. Litvinchuk

Summary: The location, shape and area of dark spots on the bodies of three closely related species of smooth newts (Lissotriton kosswigi, L. schmidtleri and L. vulgaris) were analyzed. Differences in spot characteristics allow for high confidence identification of males and females, with one species accurately distinguishable from the others. Similar patterns of dark spots confirm the conspecificity of Anatolian and Thracian populations of L. schmidtleri. The method developed in this study can be useful for identifying other animal species with spotted camouflage or aposematic coloration.

Comparison of the somatic TADs and lampbrush chromomere-loop complexes in transcriptionally active prophase I oocytes

Summary: This study compares somatic topologically associating domains (TADs) in chicken embryonic fibroblasts with chromomere-loop complexes in lampbrush meiotic chromosomes. The results suggest that there may be similarities between TADs and chromomere-loop complexes, with multiple TADs potentially being included in one chromomere-loop complex. Additionally, transcription of genes related to oocyte maturation and early embryo development was observed on the lampbrush chromosomes.

Summary: Advances in single-cell sequencing technologies have enabled the study of genome architecture in individual cells. However, there are significant differences in efficiency, bias, scale, and cost among different single-cell Hi-C protocols, and their relative advantages for different applications are unclear. By comparing the two most commonly used single-cell Hi-C protocols, researchers can gain guidance.

Lampbrush chromosome studies in the post-genomic era

Alla Krasikova, Veniamin Fishman, Tatiana Kulikova

Summary: Extraordinary lampbrush chromosomes with thousands of transcription loops have significant importance in chromosome biology research. These chromosomes become lampbrushy due to a high rate of transcription during oogenesis. Recent studies have revealed new information on transcribed sequences and the genomic context of individual chromomeres, pushing the boundaries of the discussion on their biological role. Combining genome-wide approaches with microscopy imaging techniques using lampbrush chromosomes as a model object offers fruitful avenues for future research.

Differences in release calls of the hybrid water frog Pelophylax esculentus and its parental species Pelophylax ridibundus (Anura: Ranidae) in Ukraine

Anna Fedorova, Dmytro Shabanov

Summary: This study compares the release calls of different sexes of hybrid Pelophylax esculentus and its parental species in Ukrainian populations. It found that triploid male hybrids are intermediate between diploid hybrids and parental species, while triploid females are only intermediate in terms of temporal parameters. Frequency parameters mainly depend on body size. There is a significant correlation between peak frequency and body size in females of both taxonomical groups and P. ridibundus males.
