Summary: Pharmacy-based, automated AF screening in elderly citizens identified subjects with unknown AF and an excess mortality risk over the next year. Participants with newly diagnosed or known AF had a significantly higher mortality risk compared with subjects without a history of AF at baseline and a normal ECG.

Summary: The implementation of national breast cancer screening programs in Latin America is inconsistent, with most countries opting for opportunistic mammogram screenings. A study in Chile found that breast cancer patients detected by screening have better survival rates and prognosis, likely due to a higher proportion of early-stage and hormone receptor-positive cases. Implementing systematic breast cancer screening programs in Chile may improve patient outcomes and survival rates.

Summary: This study investigates the optimal extended warranty strategies in a supply chain, considering different single-channel and dual-channel models. Results show that while customers can enjoy lower prices with manufacturers providing extended warranties, retailers selling the warranties lead to higher total profits for the supply chain.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence of incidental non-diabetic ocular comorbidities detected during diabetic retinopathy screening, finding that conditions such as hypertensive retinopathy, drusen, neovascular age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts are commonly identified during screenings. The data also showed that the prevalence of certain ocular conditions increases with age, highlighting the importance of detecting and managing these comorbidities in diabetic patients.

Summary: This study evaluates the characteristics of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its impact on morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetic subjects in a community setting. The results show that diabetes significantly increases the risk of NAFLD and advanced fibrosis in diabetic patients. Furthermore, the presence of NAFLD in diabetic subjects is associated with an increased risk of severe liver-related events, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. The severity of fibrosis also correlates with an increased risk of hepatic and extrahepatic complications. These findings provide real-world evidence of the clinical and economic burden of NAFLD in diabetic subjects.

Summary: This study provides updated evidence and consensus-based recommendations for the classification of individuals who screen positive for Krabbe Disease (KD) and recommendations for long-term follow-up for those at risk of late onset Krabbe Disease (LOKD). The newly proposed recommendations were assessed in a historical cohort and found to reduce follow-up testing by 88%. The focus is on efficient and effective classification and follow-up of NBS positive patients with a long-term follow-up for those at risk for LOKD.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the long-term effect of intensive multifactorial treatment on peripheral and central hemodynamic indices in people with screen-detected diabetes. The results showed that intensive treatment was associated with a sustained positive effect on aortic stiffness measured by cfPWV. However, there was no clear beneficial effect on other hemodynamic indices.

Summary: In selected areas of Bangladesh, individuals with type-2 diabetes mellitus are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Globorisk and FRS tools predict a higher percentage of moderate to very high risk compared to WHO/ISH, indicating lower concordance between these risk prediction tools.

Summary: The study found that 20 years after the initial whiplash injuries, patients still experienced residual symptoms such as shoulder stiffness, headache, and arm pain, while MRI findings were similar to the control group. Furthermore, there were no significant correlations between clinical symptoms and progression in MRI findings in either group.

Summary: The sweat test is the gold standard for diagnosing CF, and this study compared the outcomes of CF screening using the Gibson-Cooke and Macroduct methods. The results showed substantial agreement between the two methods in sweat chloride values, except for the CFSPID group, where the result may depend on the method of sweat collection.

Summary: Health-related values play a crucial role in participation decisions in genetic research. There is no significant difference in general prosociality between participants and refusers, emphasizing the importance of addressing communication and trust issues in recruitment strategies. Future research should explore how prosocial intrapersonal characteristics drive participation decisions and relate to contextual attributes.

Summary: Genetic determinants play a role in the development of co-morbid diseases in T2D patients, with certain SNPs identified to be associated with them. The study found that CVD was most common, followed by chronic eye disease, with potential involvement of specific SNPs like rs1870849 and rs8051326 in chronic eye disease incidence in T2D patients. Further research is needed to validate these associations.

Summary: The study found that individuals' motives for participation or withdrawal from data donation in biobanks were mainly based on perceptions of benefits or harm to society and themselves. General values and trust played crucial roles in participation, withdrawal, and willingness to permit data linkage, but were associated differently with motives. The findings highlighted the complexity and uniqueness of decision-making processes related to participation or withdrawal from biobanking, suggesting new directions for recruitment, retention, and safeguarding strategies.
