Summary: Previous research has shown that female athletes generally sleep better than male athletes according to objective measures but report worse subjective sleep quality. This study further explores the impact of the menstrual cycle on sleep quality in female athletes, revealing differences in sleep stages during different phases such as longer sleep during menstrual bleeding days and changes in deep sleep and sleep efficiency throughout the menstrual cycle.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and fatigue in colorectal cancer survivors. The results showed that worse sleep quality in colorectal cancer patients was associated with higher levels of fatigue during the first two years post-treatment. Therefore, attention should be paid to sleep quality and sleep health interventions may help reduce fatigue and improve quality of life in colorectal cancer survivors.

Summary: This study found that there was a decreased connectivity between the left thalamus and the left cerebellum in patients with insomnia disorder (ID) during the wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO) condition, compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, the thalamic connectivity with the cerebellum was negatively correlated with Fatigue Severity Scale scores. These findings highlight the link between insomnia-related daytime fatigue and the altered thalamic network after sleep onset and suggest the potential of targeting this neural pathway for fatigue mitigation.

Summary: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that lacks effective therapy and has a negative impact on a person's life. Understanding the targets related to insomnia is crucial in order to develop innovative treatments and compounds. Research on complementary and alternative medicines has shown their sedative and sleep-promoting properties through interaction with neurotransmitter systems in the brain, particularly the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptor. This review provides a summary of the role of 5-HT in insomnia development and analyzes the mechanisms of herbal medicines on different subtypes of 5-HT receptors for future reference.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical chamomile in preventing and treating oral mucositis (OM) in cancer patients. The systematic review found that topical chamomile was effective in preventing and treating OM in four out of six studies. However, the study had some limitations, such as the lack of information on the minimum age of patients. Further research is needed to determine the protocols for the use of this phytotherapy in the oncology population.

Summary: This study found that poor sleep quality is associated with less physical activity in individuals with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis, even after adjusting for demographic and medical confounders. The relationship between restless sleep and physical activity was partly mediated by high depressive symptoms and low energy levels. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind these associations and determine if improving sleep quality can lead to increased physical activity.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between sleep disturbance and energy decrements and classify oncology patients into subgroups based on their sleep disturbance and morning energy profiles. Three distinct profiles were identified, and it was found that higher profiles of sleep disturbance and lower morning energy were associated with poorer outcomes. The study highlights the importance for clinicians to prioritize the assessment and intervention of these symptoms.

Summary: This study found that monitoring daily changes in emotions can serve as a valuable indicator of early treatment response in young adults with MDD. Sleep duration and the timing of repeated partial sleep deprivation can predict patient-reported affect ratings. Participants whose bedtime was delayed by 2 hours nightly showed the most significant improvement during the first 2 weeks of fluoxetine therapy.

Summary: The study found that telemedicine delivery of CBT for insomnia is not inferior to face-to-face treatment in terms of insomnia severity, and yields similar improvements in sleep and daytime functioning outcomes. Additionally, telemedicine allows for more efficient treatment delivery without compromising therapeutic alliance.

Summary: Three in four adults in treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) experience symptoms of insomnia. However, the first-line treatment for insomnia is often delayed until abstinence is established. This study aims to test the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) among veterans in early AUD treatment and to examine how improvement in insomnia can lead to better alcohol use outcomes.
