A proposed risk assessment score for gastrointestinal stromal tumors based on evaluation of 19,030 cases from the National Cancer Database

Vincent Quoc-Huy Trinh, Nooshin Karamzadeh Dashti, Justin Merrill Marken Cates

Summary: This study aimed to improve risk assessment for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) through retrospective analysis of patient data. The proposed risk stratification score outperformed currently used risk assessment algorithms in predicting probability of presentation with metastasis at diagnosis and 4-year overall survival.

Summary: Progression risk of esophageal and colonic GISTs is associated with increased mitotic activity and size >5.0 cm, while appendiceal GISTs are typically smaller with low mitotic rates.

Glucocorticoids are induced while dihydrotestosterone levels are suppressed in 5-alpha reductase inhibitor treated human benign prostate hyperplasia patients

Renjie Jin, Connor Forbes, Nicole L. Miller, Douglas Strand, Thomas Case, Justin M. Cates, Hye-Young H. Kim, Phillip Wages, Ned A. Porter, Krystin M. Mantione, Sarah Burke, James L. Mohler, Robert J. Matusik

Summary: This study characterized the pathways associated with failure of medical therapy for BPH/LUTS. It found that 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI) therapy continued to inhibit androgenesis, but also increased tissue levels of glucocorticoids (GC). This GC activation served as a master regulator of prostatic branching and growth.

Summary: This study presents international consensus-based datasets for the pathology reporting of bone sarcoma biopsy and resection specimens. These datasets were developed under the ICCR and aim to improve the quality and standardization of pathology reporting, thus enhancing the management of bone sarcoma patients.
