Summary: Regular consumption of olive oil is associated with protection against chronic-degenerative diseases, such as cancer. Epidemiological evidence indicates an inverse association between olive oil intake and bladder cancer risk. We investigated the anti-proliferative effects of a phenolic extract prepared from an extra virgin olive oil (EVOOE) on two human bladder cancer cell lines, and the results suggest that the mixture of phenolic compounds in extra virgin olive oil activates different anti-proliferative pathways.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Vaccinium myrtillusberry extract has inhibitory and pro-apoptotic effects on prostate cancer cell lines, as well as a certain level of inhibitory effect on normal prostate epithelial cells. The recombined standard mixture of its main native phenolic compounds showed similar growth inhibitory effects.

Summary: The study found that the ripe peel aqueous extract of Ensete superbum Roxb. Cheesman exhibits high cytotoxicity, superior anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic activity compared to other parts of the plant. Bioactivity guided fractionation identified three active compounds with high cytotoxic activity in the peel extract, which also showed apoptotic effects on colorectal cancer cell lines. These findings suggest the potential of wild bananas in inhibiting the growth of colon cancer cells.

Summary: This study reveals that heat-inactivated Bifidobacterium adolescentis can enhance the regeneration of intestinal stem cells through the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, thereby alleviating colon senescence. The involvement of Paneth-like cells in the regeneration of intestinal stem cells induced by B. adolescentis is also uncovered. These findings suggest a microbiota target for ameliorating colon senescence.

Summary: Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum strain K2-21-4 can promote CCD841 CoN cell proliferation, accelerate the cell cycle process, decrease cell apoptosis, and activate proteins related to tight junctions. These findings suggest that B. longum K2-21-4 can regulate intestinal development by promoting cell proliferation and accelerating the maturation of the internal barrier.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of grape pomace extract on colon cancer cells, showing its anti-proliferative and apoptosis-inducing effects. Phenolic compounds were found to be the main active ingredients, and the extract digested with simulated gastrointestinal digestion could potentially be used as a dietary ingredient with health benefits for colon cancer cell proliferation.

Summary: The study showed that different species of bifidobacteria exhibit anticancer activity on colorectal cancer cells by regulating the expression of anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic genes, potentially contributing to the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind apoptosis induction by bifidobacteria species.

Summary: The cytotoxicity and mortality mechanisms of Artemisia marschalliana essential oil and extracts were investigated in this study. The results showed that the 60% dichloromethane extract exhibited the strongest cytotoxicity on breast cancer cells, while the 80% fraction showed the most cytotoxicity on liposarcoma cancer cells. Flow cytometry analysis confirmed the apoptosis mechanism in killing cancer cells. Additionally, the essential oil of Artemisia marschalliana showed considerable cytotoxic properties.

Summary: Lichen extracts containing compounds such as lecanoric acid possess anti-proliferative effects, particularly in cancer cells. Lecanoric acid exerts its anti-proliferative effects by arresting cells in the M phase. Importantly, it does not affect primary immune cells. These findings suggest that lecanoric acid may be a potential candidate for anti-cancer therapy.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cinnamaldehyde-rich cinnamon extract (CRCE) on colorectal cancer cell lines HCT 116 and HT-29. The results showed that CRCE inhibited cell proliferation and migration, induced cell apoptosis, and activated apoptotic proteins. In addition, CRCE also induced mitochondrial stress.
