Anaerobic digestion is one of the oldest and preferred processes for the stabilization of waste-activated sludge produced from treating urban and industrial wastewater. Although there is no clear agreement on when to clean the anaerobic digester tanks, regular cleaning has proved to enhance the efficiency of the system, to reduce mechanical problems, and to avoid a decrease in their useful volumes. This paper describes the use of the hydrocyclone technology as an alternative for desludging. The coarse fraction recovered before the hydrocyclone plant contained potentially biodegradable matter that could be used as soil amendment, with low concentrations of heavy metals. This fraction had the highest mass loss in the thermogravimetric analysis (78%), thus showing the presence of calcium stearate as the major component. This was further demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The hydrocyclone system showed time-dependent separation ability for all types of solids, with concentration factors that were higher for fixed (12 +/- 1 g/g) than for total (6 +/- 1 g/g) or volatile (2 +/- 1 gig) solids, being always higher for the warm than for the cold season. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed the presence of quartz in fine and underflow fractions. The formation of struvite was observed with the increase in phosphorus and magnesium especially in the fine fraction, with higher levels of chromium than the influent sludge, albeit without ever exceeding the maximum limited values admitted by most European countries. Roberto Rodriguez, Alejandro Munoz-Moreno, Ana Vanessa Caparros, Cristobal Garcia-Garcia, Angel Brime-Barrios, Julio Cesar Arranz-Gonzalez, Virginia Rodriguez-Gomez, Francisco Javier Fernandez-Naranjo, Alberto Alcolea

Summary: Research on tailings dams in Spain found that the alternating sedimentary layers within the dams exhibit contractive and dilative behaviors, with stability being influenced by both temporal and spatial conditions. Factors contributing to flow failure in tailing dams include saturation levels and shear stress.

Assessment of Microplastics in a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant with Tertiary Treatment: Removal Efficiencies and Loading per Day into the Environment

Javier Bayo, Sonia Olmos, Joaquin Lopez-Castellanos

Summary: The study conducted in an urban wastewater treatment plant in Southeast Spain revealed that microfibers were the most common form of microplastics, and tertiary treatments can effectively discriminate between different forms. The research also indicated a significant daily emission of microplastics into the environment, highlighting the need for source control and specific microplastic-targeted treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the microplastic burden in marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) and its adjoining beach. Fibers were found to be the predominant type of microplastics in both marine and coastal sediments. The highest concentrations were found in the deepest marine sediments and in the furthest zone from the seashore for coastal sediments.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of airborne microplastics (MPs) in the lower human airways and finds that the majority of MPs are in the form of microfibers. The average concentration of MPs in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid is 9.18 items/100 mL, with particulate MPs accounting for a small percentage. The average size of MPs is 1.73 mm, and the longest dimension corresponds to a polyacrylic fiber.

Summary: Salt efflorescences from metal sulphides and their waste are an important source of pollution in mining areas, especially in the Mediterranean region. This study characterized saline efflorescences and their leachates in a Mediterranean mining area in Southeast Spain. The physicochemical properties were determined using various techniques, and the results showed a wide range of crystalline habits and colors in the salt efflorescences. Sulphates were the dominant mineral group, followed by silicates, oxides, and sulphides. The geochemistry of the salt efflorescences indicated high concentrations of potentially toxic elements, posing a significant risk to soil and drinking water quality.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in drinking water in Spain by comparing tap water from different locations. Tap water from 24 points in 8 different locations in Spain was sampled and analyzed. The results showed that the concentration of MPs in the drinking water samples was relatively low and would probably pose a negligible risk to human health.

Summary: This study quantitatively assesses the contribution of four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to the surrounding environment in terms of microplastics (MPs). The study finds seasonal and treatment method differences in the concentrations and types of MPs. This research is important for understanding the environmental pollution of MPs and implementing measures to reduce their presence.

Summary: The present study investigated the release of microplastics from wastewater treatment plants to the neighboring environment, including marine and coastal sediments, and fish. The results showed that microplastics were detected in all samples, indicating their widespread presence. The contribution of wastewater treatment plants to marine sediments was found to be slow, but coastal sediment samples closer to these plants displayed higher microplastic concentrations.

Summary: Plastic production continues to increase every year, and this study focuses on the deposition of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere. The researchers conducted a one-year monitoring in ten urban areas in Spain to quantify the atmospheric MP deposition. The results showed that polyester fibers were the most abundant type of MPs, and densely populated areas had higher deposition rates. This study provides a systematic methodology for monitoring atmospheric MP deposition.

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers.
