The search for sustainability and the growing apprehension with environmental degradation are increasingly attracting researchers from around the world, and bringing the need for developing indicators that include the economy, society and environment. This study compares the emergy indices with 10 known indicators taken from the literature: Gross Domestic Product, Gross Domestic Product per capita, Human Development Index, Happiness Index, Life Expectancy, Democracy Index, Ecological Footprint, Surplus Biocapacity, Wellbeing Index and Environmental Sustainability Index 2002. Correlations are made using the Spearman coefficients to verify correlations between the fractions of renewable natural resources, non-renewable natural resources, resources from the economy and the emergy indices with the known indicators, and indexes emerged with the literature indicators. The analysis of the results is made by illustrative matrices and graphs. The results suggest that the combination of socio-economic and biophysical indicators is essential to provide a better understanding of the limits of economic growth and while ensuring sustainable societal well-being. Overcoming poverty traps in Mozambique: Quantifying inequalities among economic, social and environmental capitals

Biagio F. Giannetti, Estevao S. Langa, Cecilia M. V. B. Almeida, Feni Agostinho, Geraldo C. de Oliveira Neto, Ginevra Virginia Lombardi

Summary: Assessing sustainable development strategies and alternatives requires prioritizing human well-being and the environment, and developing accounting methods to measure progress towards equal well-being. Using emergy accounting, the 5SEnSU model was utilized to measure resource use inequality and assess poverty traps in Mozambique. The model revealed the importance of the environment in supporting the population and highlighted growth potential for sustainable and equitable development. However, addressing high inequality and dependency on local environmental resources requires cleaner and well-being-centered development policies.

Chemical Footprint as an Indicator of Health Impacts: The Case of Dioxins and Furans in Brazil

Biagio Fernando Giannetti, Fabio Sevegnani, Feni Agostinho, Cecilia M. V. B. Almeida, Pedro Henrique Bolanho Simoes, Gengyuan Liu

Summary: Humans are exposed to harmful chemical substances even in low quantities during their daily activities. The traditional assessment based on mass may not capture the toxicological impact accurately. To address this issue, the chemical footprint (ChF) is proposed as an alternative method to account for a chemical's environmental and human toxicological impacts, which is crucial for sustainable development. This study applies the ChF approach to calculate the impact of dioxins and furans emissions in Brazil using the USEtox model.

How robust are current narratives to deal with the urban energy-water-land nexus?

Fanxin Meng, Dongfang Wang, Gengyuan Liu, Biagio F. Giannetti, Feni Agostinho, Cecilia M. V. B. Almeida, Zhifeng Yang

Summary: The current research on the energy, water, and land nexus is biased due to treating all resources equally. To address this issue, the authors propose a methodological framework that considers resource endowment and significance. The results show that energy plays a key role in driving urban development, but the importance of land also varies depending on the weighting. Setting weights helps understand resource interactions and establish synergies based on urban development objectives. The findings provide quantitative evidence for assessing urban resource efficiency and highlighting priority sectors for intervention in urban decision-making.
