Summary: Compared to HIV-negative women, HIV-positive women showed unfavorable trends in some perinatal outcomes, such as low birth weight and small for gestational age. Further research is needed to explore the potential side effects of combination antiretroviral treatment during pregnancy.

Summary: This study found that approximately 67% of pregnant women living with HIV reported symptoms consistent with depression. The relationship between depression and adverse birth outcomes remains unclear, but interventions are needed to improve the mental health of these women and the health of their infants.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in pregnant women living with HIV (WLHIV) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) compared to ART-naive WLHIV and HIV-negative women. The findings showed that WLHIV receiving ART had a lower risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and other adverse perinatal outcomes compared to ART-naive WLHIV. However, they still had a higher risk of these outcomes compared to HIV-negative women.

Summary: Pregnancy rates following HIV acquisition in South Africa are high, highlighting the importance of timely provision of antiretroviral therapy and contraception counseling for women recently diagnosed with HIV. The study also showed improvements in CD4 count and HIV viral load trajectories in pregnant women over time.

Summary: A study conducted in northwestern Tanzania using data from a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) found that fertility rates declined from 1994 to 2018 in the study area. The fertility rate among HIV-infected women was lower than that of uninfected women, but the difference narrowed over time.

Summary: In women with HIV undergoing combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) during pregnancy, initiating treatment earlier is associated with increased risk of preterm birth and decreased risk of small-for-gestational age birth compared to late treatment initiation. However, there is no significant difference in fetal death between early and late treatment initiators.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to analyze the perinatal outcomes of Perinatally acquired HIV Infection (PHIV) in pregnant women. The study included singleton pregnancies in Women Living with HIV (WLH) between 2006 and 2019. The results showed that PHIV did not increase the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Rating: 9/10.

Summary: This study assesses recent developments in management and outcomes of pregnant women living with HIV (WLHIV) at a tertiary obstetric unit in the United Kingdom. The results show improvements in virological, obstetric, and perinatal outcomes, including a decrease in perinatal HIV transmission rate, an increase in preconception diagnosis and treatment rate, earlier initiation of antenatal treatment, a reduction in the number of women with a detectable viral load at delivery, and an increase in vaginal deliveries.

Summary: This study compared the quality of care provided by clinics and ART clubs for people living with HIV in northwest Tanzania. The findings showed better structure and process of care in ART clubs, but comparable outcomes. The perception of quality of care varied among clients, but both clinics and ART clubs were recognized for their quality of care.

Summary: This review discusses the available evidence on the prediction and prevention of preterm birth in pregnant women living with HIV. Further research on the effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and the development of predictive tools are crucial in this population. Vaginal progesterone supplementation may be a therapeutic option to prevent recurrent preterm birth in pregnant women living with HIV.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of gestational diabetes (GD) in women living with HIV (WLWH) in the UK and Ireland, evaluate associated maternal risk factors, and assess specific birth outcomes. The results showed that the prevalence of GD increased over time among WLWH but was not significantly different from the general population. Maternal age, ethnicity, and CD4 count were identified as risk factors, and stillbirth and preterm delivery were more common in WLWH with GD compared to other WLWH.

Summary: Africa has the highest number of pregnant women with HIV, which is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. The use of antiretroviral therapy has helped reduce transmission and adverse fetal outcomes, but further research is needed to understand the placental mechanisms and fetal immune responses to maternal HIV infection.

Summary: In this Tanzanian cohort, coinfection with HBV/HIV did not exacerbate renal dysfunction compared with those with either infection alone. Although overall changes in eGFR were small, persons with HBV experienced lower eGFRs throughout follow-up despite their younger age and similar baseline values. Longer-term studies are needed to evaluate continuing changes in eGFR and contributions from infection duration and other comorbidities.
