A method for the rapid analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in smoke from tobacco and electronic cigarettes and in exhaled breath of users of these smoking systems has been developed. Both disposable and rechargeable e-cigarettes were considered. Smoke or breath were collected in Bio-VOCs. VOCs were then desorbed in Tenax cartridges which were subsequently analyzed by thermal desorption coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The method provides consistent results when comparing the VOC compositions from cigarette smoke and the equivalent exhaled breath of the smokers. The differences in composition of these two sample types are useful to ascertain which compounds are retained in the respiratory system after tobacco cigarette or e-cigarette smoking. Strong differences were observed in the VOC composition of tobacco cigarette smoke and exhaled breath when comparing with those of e-cigarette smoking. The former involved transfers of a much larger burden of organic compounds into smokers, including benzene, toluene, naphthalene and other pollutants of general concern. e-Cigarettes led to strong absorptions of propylene glycol and glycerin in the users of these systems. Tobacco cigarettes were also those showing highest concentration differences between nicotine concentrations in smoke and exhaled breath. The results from disposable e-cigarettes were very similar to those from rechargeable e-cigarettes. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Exposure to metals and metalloids among pregnant women from Spain: Levels and associated factors

Manuel Lozano, Mario Murcia, Raquel Soler-Blasco, Maribel Casas, Begotxu Zubero, Gabriel Riutort-Mayol, Fernando Gil, Pablo Olmedo, Joan O. Grimalt, Ruben Amoros, Aitana Lertxundi, Martine Vrijheid, Ferran Ballester, Sabrina Llop

Summary: The study in pregnant Spanish women found that arsenic, cobalt, molybdenum, antimony, selenium and zinc were the most detected metals, with zinc showing the highest concentrations and thallium showing the lowest concentrations. Significant associations were observed between metal concentrations and factors such as working situation, social class and age. Dietary intake of seafood, meat, fruits, nuts, vegetables and alcohol affected all metal levels. Proximity to industrial areas, fields and air pollution were related to metal exposure.

A Children's Health Perspective on Nano- and Microplastics

Kam Sripada, Aneta Wierzbicka, Khaled Abass, Joan O. Grimalt, Andreas Erbe, Halina B. Rollin, Pal Weihe, Gabriela Jimenez Diaz, Randolph Reyes Singh, Torkild Visnes, Arja Rautio, Jon Oyvind Odland, Martin Wagner

Summary: This commentary summarizes the knowns and unknowns about exposures to nano-and microplastics (NMPs) during pregnancy and childhood. Currently, there is a lack of research on child-specific exposures to NMPs, and exposure estimates rely on assumptions rather than empirical measurements. Furthermore, the toxicological research on NMPs has not focused specifically on child health, despite their vulnerability. More research is needed to fill these knowledge gaps and spur policymakers and industries to address the safety of NMPs.

Monitoring temporal trends of dioxins, organochlorine pesticides and chlorinated paraffins in pooled serum samples collected from Northern Norwegian women: The MISA cohort study

Shanshan Xu, Solrunn Hansen, Arja Rautio, Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin, Khaled Abass, Jaana Rysa, Saranya Palaniswamy, Sandra Huber, Joan O. Grimalt, Pierre Dumas, Jon Oyvind Odland

Summary: This study found lower levels of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the serum of women from Northern Norway, with concentrations of dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and chlorinated paraffins showing decreasing trends over the studied period. However, medium chain chlorinated paraffins exhibited an increasing trend, raising concerns about their emerging contamination impact on humans. Further global observational studies with larger sample sizes on chlorinated paraffins are needed to validate these findings.

Summary: Urine samples from four-year-old children in a heavily industrialized zone in Asturias, Spain were analyzed to determine their metal concentration. The study found that children in this area had higher levels of vanadium, arsenic, antimony, cesium, and thallium compared to children from other sites. The diet, especially terrestrial food items like red meat and pasta, was strongly associated with increased metal concentrations in children's urine.

Prenatal exposure to multiple persistent organic pollutants in association with adiposity markers and blood pressure in preadolescents

Summary: Several studies have shown that prenatal exposure to certain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is associated with higher adiposity in childhood. This study aimed to assess the association between prenatal exposure to multiple POPs and adiposity markers and blood pressure in preadolescents. The findings suggest that prenatal exposure to POPs, especially organochlorine pesticides, is linked to unfavorable cardiometabolic health up to the age of 12.

Extreme glacial cooling likely led to hominin depopulation of Europe in the Early Pleistocene

Summary: Through analyzing deep-sea sediment samples from the Portuguese margin, researchers found pronounced millennial-scale climate variability during the glacial period around 1.154 to 1.123 million years ago, including a terminal stadial cooling comparable to the most extreme events of the last 400,000 years. Climate simulations indicate a drastic decrease in suitability of early human habitats around the Mediterranean during the terminal stadial. These extreme conditions led to the depopulation of Europe, potentially lasting for several successive glacial-interglacial cycles.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
