Summary: This study analyzed and tested the flocculation properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by the thermotolerant strain Bacillus sp. ISTVK1 in wastewater treatment. The results showed that the EPS exhibited the highest flocculating activity on the 6th day, at pH 6, temperature 32.7 degrees C, and with the presence of AlCl3 salt. The application of bacterial EPS in real wastewater also achieved significant reduction in organics and removal of certain aromatic contaminants.

Summary: Pre-treatment of biosolids can reduce the negative impact of inorganic matter during pyrolysis, leading to higher yield and quality of pyrolysis products. The removal of ash-forming elements improves organic matter devolatilization, resulting in higher bio-oil and lower biochar production. Pre-treatment also enhances biochar properties, increasing fixed carbon content, calorific value, fuel ratio, specific surface area, and porous structure formation.

Summary: The study compared the potential to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) from sewage sludge, both raw and thermally pre-treated. In batch mode, raw sludge obtained the highest maximum VFA yield at pH 8, while pre-treated sludge achieved a lower value. Continuous reactor operation showed that thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) did not significantly influence VFA yields. Microbial community analysis revealed that the phylum Fumicutes was predominant in both reactors and the enzymatic profiles involved in VFA production were similar regardless of the substrate fed.

Summary: The study found that adding Taihu blue algae biochar (ABC) at different inoculation ratios can enhance methane production, with more favorable enrichment of Methanosarcina at lower inoculation ratios. Mechanism analysis showed that the improvements in methane production at lower inoculation ratios were not due to initial organic loading rate increments.

Summary: The fate of microplastics (MPs) in sewage treatment reveals that some MPs from sludge can flow back to sewage, contributing to the circulation of MPs between sewage and sludge treatment processes. Fibrous polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (microfibers) were found to be the main MPs in the sludge sidestream, highlighting the importance of their removal during sludge treatment for effectively increasing the overall removal rate of MPs.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of inoculum type, pre-consumption of residual substrate, and the ratio of headspace volume to working volume on Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) measurements. The findings suggest that degassing and discounting methane produced in blanks are essential for accurate results. The residual substrate concentration of different inocula also plays a role in the determination.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the non-antibiotic pharmaceutical carbamazepine on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion. The results showed that carbamazepine induced the enrichment of ARGs and increased the abundance of bacteria carrying these genes. It also facilitated microbial aggregation and intercellular communication, leading to an increased frequency of ARGs transmission. Moreover, carbamazepine promoted the acquisition of ARGs by pathogens and elevated their overall abundance.

Summary: This paper developed a machine learning model to predict the biochemical methane potential during anaerobic digestion. Model analysis identified lignin content, organic loading, and nitrogen content as key attributes for methane production prediction. For feedstocks with high cellulose content, early methane production is lower but can be improved by prolonging digestion time. Moreover, lignin content exceeding a certain value significantly inhibits methane production.

Summary: This study investigated the operation of a 1000L microalgae-based membrane photobioreactor system for continuous secondary wastewater treatment. The research focused on a green microalgae strain called Desmodesmus sp. The study aimed to understand key trends and optimization strategies by conducting experiments in both summer and winter seasons. The findings showed that maintaining low cell concentrations during periods of light inhibition was beneficial for nutrient uptake rates. Effective strategies for enhancing algae-based wastewater treatment included cell mass recycling and adjusting dilution rates based on light availability.
