In this study, the performance of partial nitrification via nitrite at low temperature was investigated in a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with a working volume of 7.0 m(3). A novel real-time control strategy, based on blower frequency (BF) and pH, was designed and evaluated. The nitrogen break point (NBP) in the BF curve and the nitrate/nitrite apex point (NAP) in the pH curve were used to identify the endpoint of the aerobic and anoxic phases, respectively. The nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) rapidly increased from 19.8% to 90%. Partial nitrification was achieved at low temperature (11-16 degrees C) in 40 days and was stably maintained for as long as 140 days by applying a real-time control strategy based on pH and BF. Fluorescence in situ hybirdization (FISH) results demonstrated that ammonia oxidation bacteria (AOB) had developed into the dominant nitrifying bacteria compared to nitrite oxidation bacteria (NOB) in the system. Prospective relationships between college adjustment, self-esteem, and mental health status among Chinese undergraduates

Guohua Zhang, Xiaolian Tu, Nani Ding, Joseph T. F. Lau, Pengcheng Wang, Xue Yang

Summary: This three-wave longitudinal study examined the relationships between college adjustment, self-esteem, and mental health status. The findings suggest that college adjustment and self-esteem have a moderate level of stability and are significantly correlated with mental health status. Furthermore, college adjustment and self-esteem can predict future mental health outcomes. Therefore, interventions targeting self-esteem and college adjustment may have positive effects on long-term mental health.

Summary: Resonance acoustic mixing (RAM) technology is an attractive and safe method for material mixing, which offers high efficiency and uniformity. The study on the preparation of PBX using RAM showed that the mixing process can be divided into three stages: rough cladding, converging into a smooth ball, and flat fluidization. The PBX exhibited good uniformity and rheological behavior.

Guaranteed cost control and anti-windup design of saturated switched systems

Xinquan Zhang, Jianlin Wang

Summary: This paper studies the problem of guaranteed cost control and anti-windup design for a class of switched systems with actuator saturation. The switching strategy and anti-windup compensator are designed to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system and minimize the cost function. Sufficient conditions for the existence of an anti-windup compensator of guaranteed cost are presented using the multiple Lyapunov functions method. Based on these conditions, the minimum upper bound of the cost function is determined by solving an optimization problem under the constraint of linear matrix inequality (LMI). A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Bayesian piecewise exponential phase II design for monitoring a time-to-event endpoint

Yun Qing, Peter F. Thall, Ying Yuan

Summary: A robust Bayesian design is proposed for monitoring a time to event endpoint in a single-arm phase II trial. Simulation results show that the piecewise exponential design has better performance than the exponential inverse gamma model based design, with higher probabilities of correctly stopping the trial early and shorter and less variable trial duration. Compared to the Weibull model based design, the piecewise exponential design does a better job of maintaining small incorrect stopping probabilities when the true median survival time is desirably large.

Structure-Property Relationship of Cyano-Functionalized Conjugated Polymers for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Xu Chi, Qian Chen, Zhi-An Lan, Xirui Zhang, Xiong Chen, Xinchen Wang

Summary: Conjugated polymers (CPs) have received increasing attention in photocatalysis due to their stability and molecular tunability. In this study, a new efficient cyano (CN) engineering approach was proposed to enhance the photocatalytic performance of CPs. Three CP-based photocatalysts with different CN contents were synthesized to investigate the relationship between CN functionalization and photocatalytic activity. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that CN functionalization strengthened the donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction, enhanced light absorption, charge separation/transfer efficiency, hydrophilicity of CPs, and facilitated the output of photoinduced electrons from CPs to Pt cocatalyst.

Transient study on filling characteristics of LOX dome

Jiabao Xu, Yan Wu, Qingcheng Zhu, Ping Jin, Jue Wang, Guobiao Cai

Summary: The 3D flow filling process of LOX dome in a liquid oxygen/methane rocket engine was studied, and the volume, flow field pressure, and velocity distributions of liquid oxygen at different times were determined. The flow property of propellant and the injection characteristic time of liquid oxygen were obtained. The results revealed that when the LOX dome was not filled, the flow state of LOX was disorderly and it flowed around the annular wall in the middle dome. However, after the LOX filling was completed, the liquid oxygen flow became stable and the overall velocity distribution became more uniform. There were also varying injection delays in different areas, leading to the inhomogeneity of injection characteristic time and flow rate in the thrust chamber.

Summary: This study proposes a smart skin system inspired by the active color-changing mechanism of chameleons. By integrating a nanoscale hole array of photonic crystals, carbon nanotube coatings, and liquid crystal elastomers, the smart skin achieves structural color tunability, sensing, and actuation. The system autonomously modulates the color according to the environmental color and successfully demonstrates color scanning from red to green to blue. This research opens up new paths for creating active tunable structural color systems and promotes the development of structural color-based devices and systems.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the non-antibiotic pharmaceutical carbamazepine on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion. The results showed that carbamazepine induced the enrichment of ARGs and increased the abundance of bacteria carrying these genes. It also facilitated microbial aggregation and intercellular communication, leading to an increased frequency of ARGs transmission. Moreover, carbamazepine promoted the acquisition of ARGs by pathogens and elevated their overall abundance.

Machine learning-based prediction of methane production from lignocellulosic wastes

Summary: This paper developed a machine learning model to predict the biochemical methane potential during anaerobic digestion. Model analysis identified lignin content, organic loading, and nitrogen content as key attributes for methane production prediction. For feedstocks with high cellulose content, early methane production is lower but can be improved by prolonging digestion time. Moreover, lignin content exceeding a certain value significantly inhibits methane production.
