Phytoremediation technologies such as constructed wetlands have shown higher efficiencies in removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters than conventional wastewater treatment processes, and plants seem to have an important role in the removal of some of those compounds. In this context, a study was conducted to assess tolerance, uptake, and metabolism of the epilepsy drug, carbamazepine, by the macrophyte Typha spp. This evaluation was conducted in hydroponic solutions with 0.5-2.0 mg/L of this pharmaceutical for a maximum period of 21 days. The removal of carbamazepine from nutrient solutions by the plants reached values of 82% of the initial contents. Furthermore, a metabolite (10,11-dihydro-10,11-epoxycarbamazepine) was detected in leaf tissues indicating carbamazepine translocation and metabolism inside plants. Activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, and guaiacol peroxidase generally increase (after some mild initial inhibition in the case of the latter enzyme) as result of the abiotic stress caused by the exposure to carbamazepine, but ultimately Typha seemed able to cope with its toxicity. The results obtained in this study suggest the ability of Typha spp., to actively participate in the removal of carbamazepine from water when used in phytotreatment systems. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Matteo Boattini, Lorena Charrier, Andre Almeida, Eirini Christaki, Torcato Moreira Marques, Valentina Tosatto, Gabriele Bianco, Marco Iannaccone, Georgios Tsiolakkis, Christos Karagiannis, Panagiota Maikanti, Lourenco Cruz, Diogo Antao, Maria Ines Moreira, Rossana Cavallo, Cristina Costa

Summary: This study aimed to describe the clinical features and analyze the factors associated with non-invasive ventilation failure and in-hospital death of adult patients hospitalized with influenza-A/B and RSV pneumonia. The findings showed that patients with obstructive sleep apnoea or obesity hypoventilation syndrome had a higher risk of NIV failure in influenza-A virus pneumonia. Patients undergoing NIV treatment had a higher risk of in-hospital death, regardless of comorbidities.

Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Aggregation and Pre-aggregation Phenomena of Asphaltenes in Model Solvent Mixtures by Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Quantum Mechanical Calculations

Lucas G. Celia-Silva, Rafaela N. Martins, Alfredo J. Palace Carvalho, Joa P. Prates Ramalho, Pedro Morgado, Eduardo J. M. Filipe, Luis F. G. Martins

Summary: This study systematically investigates the pre-aggregation behavior of asphaltene in the absence and presence of ionic liquids (ILs) using molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of cation chain length and anion dimension on asphaltene aggregation are studied. The results show that ILs have a dispersing effect on asphaltene, and this effect is influenced by the alkyl side chain length of the cation and the radius of the anion. The findings are supported by DFT calculations. The study also demonstrates that CO2 acts as a precipitating agent, but does not affect the relative performance of the ILs.

Summary: This study aims to explore the burden of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) on the long-term post-transplant course in kidney-transplanted patients (KTs) with extensive adoption of expanded-criteria donors (ECDs). A retrospective evaluation of 929 consecutive first KTs was performed, and CMV incidence was found to be 19.5%. Donor and recipient age, recipient pre-transplant hypertension, DR antigen compatibility, cold ischemia time, and post-transplant early complications were associated with CMV. The findings of this study have important implications for the long-term post-transplant outcomes and prognosis of kidney transplant recipients.

Extraction Bottleneck in the Diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2: Evaluation of an Alternative Protocol Derived from Veterinary Use

Paolo Bottino, Elisa Zanotto, Francesca Sidoti, Lisa Pastrone, Roberto Piva, Elisabetta Mereu, Cristina Costa, Rossana Cavallo

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges to health-care systems, with a lack of available extraction reagents being a major obstacle in SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. To address this limitation, a comparative analysis was performed to evaluate the performance of an alternative extraction protocol adapted from veterinary use for an open robotic platform (Testing method). The Testing method showed excellent performance in RNA extraction, with a high level of agreement with the laboratory Standard of Care. This method offers advantages such as lower sample input volume, adaptability to robotic liquid handlers, and the ability to overcome the shortage of deep-well plates.

Microplastics Detected in Sediments and Rocks Substrate of Marine Areas with Ghost Nets

Dyana Vitale, Andrea Spinelli, Yolanda Pico

Summary: According to reports from UNEP and FAO, abandoned fishing nets in the oceans account for about 10% of the total plastic waste. These ghost nets can degrade over time and release microplastics, leading to environmental contamination. A study conducted in the Gulf of Cefalu, northern coast of Sicily, Italy, aims to understand the contamination level in the area by analyzing microplastics in sediment and rock substrate samples collected through scuba diving. The study identified the presence of polyamide, nylon, or polyethylene, possibly derived from the degradation of fishing nets, in the impacted areas.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach is used to monitor the consumption of illicit drugs by analyzing the concentration of these drugs in municipal sewage. A study conducted in Valencia, Spain monitored the consumption of 16 drugs of abuse and metabolites over a period of one to two weeks between 2011 and 2020. The results showed that cannabis, tobacco, and cocaine were the most consumed drugs, with an increasing trend in cannabis and cocaine use since 2018. Furthermore, higher consumption of certain drugs was observed during weekends and local festivities. WBE proved to be an objective and useful methodology to study temporal drug consumption patterns.

Carbamazepine facilitated horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes by enhancing microbial communication and aggregation

Yinping Xiang, Meiying Jia, Rui Xu, Jialu Xu, Lele He, Haihao Peng, Weimin Sun, Dongbo Wang, Weiping Xiong, Zhaohui Yang

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the non-antibiotic pharmaceutical carbamazepine on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during anaerobic digestion. The results showed that carbamazepine induced the enrichment of ARGs and increased the abundance of bacteria carrying these genes. It also facilitated microbial aggregation and intercellular communication, leading to an increased frequency of ARGs transmission. Moreover, carbamazepine promoted the acquisition of ARGs by pathogens and elevated their overall abundance.

Summary: This paper developed a machine learning model to predict the biochemical methane potential during anaerobic digestion. Model analysis identified lignin content, organic loading, and nitrogen content as key attributes for methane production prediction. For feedstocks with high cellulose content, early methane production is lower but can be improved by prolonging digestion time. Moreover, lignin content exceeding a certain value significantly inhibits methane production.
