A series of novel dispirooxindolopyrrolizidine derivatives have been synthesized through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of azomethine ylide generated from proline and isatin with the dipolarophile (E)-2-arylidine-1-keto carbazoles. The synthesized cycloadducts were evaluated for antimicrobial activities. Compounds 7d and 7e showed relatively good antibacterial and antifungal activities. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Effect of Different Gamma Dose and Chemical Etching on Pre- and Post-Alpha-Irradiated PM-355 Polymer

Mostafizur Rahaman, Govindasami Periyasami, Ali Aldalbahi

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different gamma doses on pre- and post-alpha-irradiated PM-355 polymer, analyzing its phase crystallinity, structure, and optical properties using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The results show that irradiation and etching decrease crystallinity but increase crystallite and cluster size of the polymer. The optical band gap energy decreases with higher irradiation doses, indicating formation of nonradiative centers, with etched samples showing more significant changes in carbon atom per cluster and cluster size than nonetched ones. Photoluminescence analysis reveals induced defects and clusters in the polymer after irradiation, suggesting its potential use as a gamma radiation detector.

Effect of carbons' structure and type on AC electrical properties of polymer composites: predicting the percolation threshold of permittivity through different models

Mostafizur Rahaman, Prashant Gupta, Mokarram Hossain, Govindasami Periyasami, Paramita Das

Summary: The AC electrical properties of EVA- and NBR-based composites filled with different conductive fillers were investigated. The addition of these conductive fillers led to significant increases in AC electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity, indicating their potential as supercapacitors. Different sigmoidal models were tested to determine the percolation threshold value of permittivity for these binary polymer composite systems, showing variation in results. The paper discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of these models, and compares them with classical percolation theory and results from published literature.

Summary: The cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanomaterials were synthesized through coprecipitation technique with pH values of 7, 8, and 9. The resulting nanomaterials exhibited ligand-metal coordination and showed emission peaks at 488 nm and 745 nm in the photoluminescence spectra. Vibrating sample magnetometry confirmed the magnetic nature of the samples. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum revealed absorption bands at 584 cm(-1) and 666 cm(-1), corresponding to Co-O and O-Co-O stretching modes, respectively. The SEM image demonstrated a morphological transformation of the Co3O4 nanomaterials from spherical to cubic to agglomerated shape with increasing pH. UV-Vis spectra showed absorption bands at 473 nm and 762 nm for materials prepared at pH 7 and 8, while at pH 9, the peaks shifted to higher wavelengths at 515 nm and 777 nm. The cyclic voltammetry curves indicated good charge propagation with the electrodes. The Nyquist plots exhibited a semicircle in the high frequency region and a vertical line in the low frequency region. These findings suggest that Co3O4 is a promising material for applications in light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and optoelectronic devices.
